Hamas has an Islamic Jihad problem in the Gaza Strip
2022-08-07 | |
Regardless of how and when the current round of fighting ends, it’s clear that the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad organization has managed to reassert its status as the second largest and most influential terror group in the Gaza Strip. It’s also obvious that Islamic Jihad has become a major threat not only to Israel, but to Hamas as well. Similarly, it has also become a real threat to the Palestinian Authority, especially in the northern West Bank. In the past several years, Islamic Jihad has been openly challenging Hamas by operating as a state-within-a-state in the Gaza Strip. Hamas leaders have always displayed intolerance towards rival groups in the coastal enclave. Even more disturbing for Hamas is the fact that a number of other armed groups have joined Islamic Jihad in firing rockets at Israel in the past 24 hours. These groups are affiliated with Fatah, Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Popular Resistance Committees and Nasser Salah a-Din Brigades. The fighting in the Gaza Strip shows that Hamas is no longer the sole decision-maker on matters related to military confrontations with Israel. It further illustrates that Islamic Jihad is capable of acting as an independent military force without having to coordinate with, or receive permission from, Hamas. A statement published by the armed wing of Islamic Jihad on Saturday boasted that the terrorist groups were united in confronting the Israeli "aggression" on the Gaza Strip. The statement, nonetheless, does not seem to reflect the reality on the ground, namely that Hamas has still not joined Islamic Jihad and its allies in the current round of fighting. By Saturday afternoon, there was still no indication that Hamas was keen on joining the fighting. Statements issued by Hamas leaders offered nothing but lip service to Islamic Jihad and the other terrorist groups. A terse statement by Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said that he "affirmed during contacts with the Egyptian intelligence heads that what happened in the Gaza Strip is the responsibility of the occupation state alone." Haniyeh, in addition, "stressed the need to stop the bombing targeting the Gaza Strip." Another statement released by Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum also failed to offer any hint that his group was planning to join the fighting. "The resistance, with all its military arms and factions, is united in this battle, will defend our people in the Gaza Strip with everything it possesses, and will defeat the occupation as it defeated it in all the battles," said Barhoum. At this stage, it’s obvious that Hamas does not want Islamic Jihad to drag it into another all-out confrontation with Israel. Hamas’s biggest fear is that another war could trigger a revolt against its regime by the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who paid a heavy price during last year’s military confrontation with Israel. Hamas is now hoping that Egypt and Qatar will be able to achieve a new ceasefire between Israel and Islamic jihad. Although it is doing its utmost not to get involved in the fighting, Hamas is apparently worried that if the fighting escalates and the number of casualties rises in the Gaza Strip, it will no longer be able to continue sitting on the fence. In the past, Hamas found itself in the same position that Islamic Jihad is in now, when it created a state-within-a-state under the rule of the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority’s failure to rein in Hamas in the 1990s ultimately saw the Islamists seize control of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007 after toppling the Palestinian Authority. Paradoxically, Israel’s military strikes against Islamic Jihad serve the interests of Hamas by undermining the organization that poses a threat to its rule over the Gaza Strip. But Hamas’s failure to assist Islamic Jihad could also prove to be counterproductive, especially in wake of increased voices criticizing the rulers of the Gaza Strip for their neutral stance.

Hamas urges PA police officers to carry out terrorist attacks |
2022-07-31 |
[Jpost] Hamas praises terrorist, urges PA security forces to “clash with occupation forces and settlers to defend our people and our land.” Hamas has called on members of Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank to carry out terrorist attacks against settlers and IDF soldiers. The call came after a Palestinian security officer was shot last week by soldiers as he opened fire at a military position near Nablus. The IDF said that several armed Palestinians arrived by car at the military post between Nablus and Huwara. One gunman got out of the vehicle and opened fire. The soldiers returned fire and wounded the assailant, who was taken to an Israeli hospital. The gunman was identified as Mahmoud Hajeer, 23, an officer with the Palestinian Police from Balata refugee camp near Nablus. The involvement of the police officer in the shooting attack came amid growing fear that the PA and its security forces are losing control of the situation in the northern West Bank, especially in the areas of Nablus and Jenin. Palestinian sources said over the weekend that there were signs of increased cooperation between gunmen belonging to Fatah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in these areas. Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif al-Qanou praised the officer who carried out the shooting attack and urged all members of the PA security forces to follow suit and “clash with the occupation forces and settlers to defend our people and our land.” Qanou also called on the members of the PA security services to reject security coordination between the authority and the IDF. OTHER TERROR GROUPS RESPOND The PLO’s Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), a secular, Marxist-Leninist terrorist group, called on the PA leadership to turn thousands of its security officers into a “protective shield for our people against settler attacks and a deterrence force against the IDF.” The DFLP said that changing the duties of the PA security services would “strengthen the cohesion between the people and their security forces.” Nafez Azzam, a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad official, said on Friday that the increased number of terrorist attacks in the West Bank have “confused” Israel. Azzam said that he expected an increase in attacks. Police prevent Jerusalem terror group rally, arrest 6 |
2017-02-22 |
[IsraelTimes] Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine planned show of force to mark release of member from prison The Israel Police on Tuesday said it had prevented a violent parade by a terror group in an East Jerusalem neighborhood that was aimed at showing solidarity with terrorists. Jerusalem District Commander Deputy Commissioner Yoram Halevi signed off on a order banning the event, organized by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Paleostine ... a breakaway faction of the Pöpular Frönt för the Liberation of Paleostine. The are regarded as the most intellectual of Paleostinian fedayeen groups, smoking cheap cigarettes and drawing heavily on Marxist-Leninist theory to explain their crappy lives. They can occasionally be seen strutting through the streets of Paleostine, dressed up like soldiers and lugging firearms, though they seldom manage to hit anything and then usually by accident. This may be because of their habit of wearing black masks that cut off most of their vision. That would also explain their habit of occasionally walking into walls, which is a well-known attribute of those immersed in true understanding of the dialectic... , in the Issawiya neighborhood. Police, with the assistance of the Jerusalem municipality, entered Issawiya and dismantled a marquee tent where some of the activities were supposed to take place Tuesday and in the coming days, the statement said. Six suspects, residents of Issawiya, were tossed in the slammer Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try! for membership in a terror group, disturbing the peace, and conspiracy to commit a crime, police said. During searches on Tuesday, officers uncovered illegal weapons including an M-16 rifle, a Carl Gustav submachine gun, bullet magazines, commando knives, costumes, military uniforms, masks, Paleostinian flags, sound equipment, banners and posters. "Police will not allow the existence of any activities by terror groups in Israel," the statement said. "They thwarted and prevented a violent and illegal show of force that was planned to include the use of illegal weapons inside Israeli territory and that was intended to encourage Lions of Islam affiliated with the terror organization." After questioning, the suspects were to be brought before a court for an extension of their arrest. Police said they had recently received information the DFLP planned to hold an event to mark the release from prison of a security prisoner, affiliated with the organization, at the end of a lengthy prison sentence. Police did not identify the DFLP member, noting only that he was scheduled to walk free on Tuesday. |

Palestinians mark DFLP anniversary with armed procession near Jerusalem |
2014-02-23 |
[Jerusalem Post] Palestinians in the village of Abu Dis, which lies just outside of the Jerusalem municipal boundaries, staged a procession over the weekend to mark the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Marxist faction and a member organization of the Palestine Liberation Organization. They've accomplished so much in nearly half a century. Dozens of Palestinians were seen brandishing AK-47 and M16 semiautomatic rifles as well as hand grenades and pistols while clad in military gear, according to Israel Radio. A number of shots were fired in the air during the festivities. Camo, guns, a shot now and then. Sort of a Mooslim Duck Dynasty ? In recent months, Palestinians have increasingly been displaying firearms out in the open, particularly in the refugee camps of the West Bank, this after years in which the Palestinian Authority banned the practice. Reverting to what they know best, violence. The sight of Palestinians openly and brazenly brandishing firearms in open throughout PA-ruled areas has gradually returned to the landscape, particularly in areas like the Balata, Dheishe, and the Jalazone refugee camps, according to Israel Radio. Witnesses said that armed gunmen from Hamas and Islamic Jihad have also started to make public appearances in the Jenin refugee camp. A hamentaschen door-to-door sales campaign no doubt. Unlike those areas, however, Abu Dis in in Area B, which means that security responsibility for the region falls on Israels shoulders. |

Israel deports hunger-strike Palestinian
2013-04-13 | |||
Israel has told the European Union and UN it can deport a Palestinian prisoner on a life-endangering long-term hunger strike to one of their member states, an Israeli official told AFP on Friday. But a lawyer for Samer Issawi, who has intermittently refused food for more than eight months,
Issawi, 33, was first arrested in 2002 and sentenced to 26 years for military activities on behalf of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He was released by Israel under a prisoner swap deal in October 2011, but rearrested last July for violating the terms of the agreement by travelling to the West Bank from east Jerusalem. The Israeli official said Issawi had gone to the West Bank to establish terror cells there. Israel has ordered that he serve the remainder of his original sentence. Issawis health has deteriorated because of his prolonged fast, and he was being held in an Israeli hospital. The Israeli official said he could immediately be released to Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus office said Israel was willing to deport Issawi to any EU member country, or any UN member country, said the official, noting that they had yet to receive an answer from either. An EU spokesman told AFP that Israel has not formally approached the EU on this subject. However, the Israeli official insisted the issue came up in official communications between officials on both sides. Lawyer Jawad Boulos said that while Israel had tried to make him agree to being deported to any of a number of countries, including Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Finland and Switzerland, Issawi had strongly refused in principle to be deported to any state. Issawi is the last of four Palestinian prisoners who were on extended hunger strikes in Israeli prisons, after two ended their fast in February and a third was exiled from the West Bank last month to the Gaza Strip for 10 years.

Palestinians playing Happy Families: PLO factions to convene in Gaza City
2011-05-24 | ||||
The factions, operating under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization, will meet at the office of the Arab Liberation Front, said politburo member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine Salih Nasser. Eight PLO factions said Saturday that they would not nominate candidates for the government of technocrats being formed under the unity deal. The factions said in a statement that they had been left out of the unity process and would not lend it legitimacy by nominal participation. Nasser said the announcement prompted the meeting, and parties would discuss ways in which the smaller factions of the PLO could be guaranteed adequate participation in the unity process. The meeting would address mechanisms to push forward unity, principally the formation of a technocrat government.

Another Gaza goomba dead on 'jihad mission' |
2011-04-15 |
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The armed wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine said one of the group's fighters was killed Thursday morning, when an explosive device detonated while the young man was on a "jihad mission," a statement said. It is the second accidental death of a Gaza resistance fighter reported in as many days, following the death of an Al-Qassam brigadesman in Khan Younis on Wednesday. A DFLP statement said National Resistance Brigades fighter Khader Abu Elbeh, 22, was seriously wounded during an operation west of the Jabaliya area in the northern Gaza Strip and later died of his injuries. Medical sources in Gaza confirmed that a man was pronounced dead after being seriously wounded by a bomb which exploded, apparently prematurely. Yes...apparently. In their statement, the NRB mourned the death of the fighter, saying he was killed while "on a jihad mission," and vowed to continue resistance activities as a "goal and a promise to our nation." Meanwhile, Khader will feed worms... |
