Two people fired at a courthouse in Istanbul
2024-02-07
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] In Istanbul, a man and a woman carried out an armed attack on a courthouse, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Erlikaya reported on the social network X.

“Today, at 11:46 (which coincides with Moscow time), an attempt was made to attack the security post at the entrance to the Caglayan court building,” the message says.

The attackers were neutralized. However, six people were injured in the attack, including three police officers.

The entrances and exits to the courthouse were closed. Police and medical teams were sent to the scene. In a statement, the head of the Turkish Interior Ministry said that the attackers were members of a terrorist organization.

The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.

As Regnum reported, on February 1, a man broke into a factory located in the Turkish suburb of Gebze.
...a town in Kocaeli province.
Threatening with weapons, he took the people there hostage. Police blocked the streets around the enterprise.

Later, on February 2, Turkish police neutralized a man who was holding seven Procter & Gamble employees hostage in a suburb of Istanbul. The attacker had a weapon and a belt with explosives on him. All hostages were released.
The Regnum journalist is understandably confused. The P&G factory where the hostages were held is in Gebze. P&G also has a factory in Istanbul, where long ago Mr. Wife’s team developed all the Ariel laundry detergent formulas. P&G has hundreds of factories around the world, including scattered around the former Soviet Union.

As reported by Regnum news agency, the incident occurred at 11:46 (which coincides with Moscow time). Initially, it was reported that two attackers fired at the guards at the entrance to the Caglayan courthouse and were eliminated by return fire.

Six casualties were reported, including three police officers.

Teargas fired at burial of hunger striking Istanbul lawyer
2020-08-29
[Rudaw] Istanbul police fired teargas and chased away hundreds of mourners on Friday during the burial of a lawyer who died on the 238th day of a hunger strike she staged to protest her jailing on terror charges.

Timtik was a member of the Contemporary Lawyers' Association (CHD), a group accused of having close ties to the outlawed Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), a far-left Marxist organization.
Friends said Ebru Timtik weighed just 30 kilogrammes at the time of her death late Thursday, which drew condemnation from Ottoman Turkish opposition parties, international lawyers associations and the EU.

Police fired teargas as Timtik's friends and supporters approached a cemetery on the northern edge of Istanbul where her body was buried, an AFP team on the ground said.

Top DHKP-C terrorist group member caught plotting attack

[DAILYSABAH] Seval Yaprak, a wanted senior member of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), has been captured in northwestern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
Yaprak was on the country's most wanted list and was in charge of the terrorist group's "armed propaganda unit," according to a statement released Monday by authorities.

Acting upon intelligence that she would "carry out a sensational attack," Istanbul police launched an investigation and concentrated efforts on her possible hideouts.

Upon receiving an anonymous tip that a woman resembling the wanted terrorist and wearing a headscarf was spotted heading to the border city of Edirne in northwestern Turkey, police launched an operation.

The car she was traveling in with another suspect was stopped at a gas station in Kirklareli near Edirne. Police detained Yaprak and the other unidentified suspect while "digital and written propaganda material" for the DHKP-C found in their possession.

The terrorist group, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the Europe

an Union, is responsible for a number of attacks in Turkey, including the liquidation of business tycoon Özdemir Sabanci in 1996 and an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in 2013.

The group has become less active in the country in recent years but remains a major security threat.

The DHKP-C, which operated under the name "Dev Sol" until 1994, grabbed credit for a series of high-profile murders, including the liquidation of nationalist politician Gun Sazak and former Prime Minister Nihat Erim in 1980.

The group also killed several Ottoman Turkish intelligence officers.

In 1994, the DHKP-C was founded after Dev Sol splintered. The group's terror activities remained relatively minor compared to the PKK, another terrorist organization targeting Turkey.

Turkey asks Germany to extradite 136 people with 'terror links'
2018-10-02
[PRESSTV] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
has called on Germany to extradite 136 people with suspected links to groups that played a key role in orchestrating the July 2016 coup attempt against the government in Ankara.

Turkey's English-language Hurriyet Daily News newspaper said on Monday that President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
told news hounds on a return flight after a visit to Berlin last week that Turkey had delivered a list of 136 people for extradition from Germany following the failed coup.

"I don't know all of the names but it is a substantial list. A list of 136 people in Germany," Hurriyet quoted the Ottoman Turkish president as saying, without specifying which groups or individuals were included.

The paper, however, quoted Erdogan as saying that Germany should be more effective in countering members of the network of the US-based holy man Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) hard boy group and the far-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).

Erdogan also said his administration had in the past delivered documents to Berlin containing the names of more than 4,000 people with links to the PKK, adding that there was a difference in the "understanding of terror" between Turkey and both Germany and the United States.

in separate police raids in June and July and include one Swede and a German national.

Idil Eser, director of Amnesia Amnesty International Turkey, is also among those on trial.

Accusations include supporting groups that Turkey has proscribed as "terrorist" organizations, such as the Gulen movement, and Kurdish separatist factions.
Update from Deutsche Welle at 5:30 a.m. ET:
A court in Istanbul on Wednesday said that German activist Peter Steudtner and 11 other human rights activists should be released on Wednesday after the Turkish public prosecutor requested an end to the pre-trial detention of the group.
It sounds like this is a for-the-duration-of-the-trial thingy, rather than sending them home for good.
The Turkish government has accused the group of "aiding armed terrorist organizations" through civil society actions in Turkey. The government has also accused the activists of being members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), far-left DHKP-C and the Gulen movement.

One injured in gun battle at Istanbul courthouse, police detain 20
2017-09-22
[Hurriyet Daily News] At least one person was injured on Sept. 21 when a shootout broke out between rival gangs at Istanbul’s Caglayan courthouse.

The shootout broke out between the opposite sides of a murder trial, which was ongoing at the 10th High Criminal Court at the complex.

An injured person, only identified with the initials K.G., was taken to the hospital by medical teams. A child was also taken to the hospital, but it was unclear if it was a case of shock or physical injury.

Some 20 people in connection to the armed clash were detained while a brawl also erupted during the police intervention. Reinforcements and a police helicopter were also deployed to the scene.

Those detained were reportedly members of two rival gangs that have also had festivities in the past.

Police are searching for anyone else involved in the fracas.

K.G. was reportedly being tried without arrest in the case of a murder committed eight months ago in the Gaziosmanpasa district.

Caglayan courthouse, one of the largest in the country, was at the center of a major incident in March 2015 when members of the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) seized and killed a prosecutor, Mehmet Selim Kiraz.

Turkey Places Hunger Strikers under Arrest on Terror Charges
2017-05-25
[AnNahar] A Turkish court has placed under arrest on terror charges an academic and a teacher who have been on a long hunger strike to protest against their dismissal in a purge after last year's failed coup, reports said.

Nuriye Gulmen and Semih Ozakca were remanded in jug ahead of trial by an Ankara court late Tuesday on charges of "membership of a terror organization", the NTV and CNN-Turk channels said. They had initially been detained on Monday.

Both were sacked under the state of emergency imposed after the July 15 attempted coup seeking to overthrow President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

that has seen tens of thousands lose their jobs.

Former primary school teacher Ozakca and academic Gulmen began their hunger strike two-and-a-half months ago and have been surviving on water alone.

In a video published as they attended their court hearing, the pair said they were determined to continue their struggle.

"We will continue our fight until we are victorious," said Ozakca.

"For us, the resistance will continue in prison. I invite everyone to continue the resistance outside," said Gulmen.

A protest in their support Tuesday afternoon in Ankara was violently dispersed by the police, with several people tossed in the clink

Turkey blasts Greece for releasing coup soldiers
2017-01-28
[Hurriyet Daily News] Ankara will take "necessary steps" against Athens after a Greek court ruled not to extradite Turkish soldiers accused of involvement in last year’s July 15 coup attempt, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Jan. 27.

"There is a migration deal we signed, including a readmission deal with Greece, and we are evaluating what we can do, including the cancellation of the readmission deal with Greece," he said in an interview with TRT Haber.

Cavusoglu’s remarks came after the Supreme Court of Greece refused on Jan. 26 to extradite eight Turkish soldiers who sought political asylum after the failed coup.

"We gave Greece all the necessary documents, evidence and everything. We demanded that the eight soldiers be tried again. This is a political decision. Now Greece is in a position protecting and hosting coup plotters and terrorists. It also possessed forces of Evil like the DHKP-C and the PKK. It is also known that there are some DHKP-C camps in Greece." the minister said," in reference to two outlawed groups, the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The soldiers, including two majors, flew helicopters to Alexandroupolis on July 16, 2016, prompting the Greek authorities to begin legal and diplomatic proceedings on charges of illegal entry into the country. "Greece condemned the coup attempt in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

the Greek judiciary is independent. The rulings are respected and binding," it said. The two countries play an important role in the handling of Europe’s worst migration crisis in decades, and the EU depends on Ankara to enforce a deal to stem mass migration to Europe.

Sought DHKP-C militant caught in Turkey’s northwest
2017-01-23
An outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C)
...which sometimes has Marxist at the beginning of its name and sometimes is described as "a radical, ultra-leftist group"...
militant who attacked the Istanbul police headquarters and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) headquarters late on Jan. 20 was apprehended by police in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ on Jan. 22.

DHKP-C militant Şerif Turunç, 43, who was sought by the Interior Ministry with an arrest warrant and a 300,000-Turkish Liras reward, carried out the attacks with a light anti-tank weapon.

According to newly obtained information, Turunç entered Turkey illegally with another DHKP-C militant, Bilgehan Karpat, and he attempted to return to Greece by changing the way he looks in order not to be recognized.

A glock weapon was found on him when he was apprehended.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin said on Twitter late on Jan. 20 that no one was injured in the attack on the police headquarters, and an investigation had been launched.

No injuries were reported after the attack on the AKP headquarters, which came an hour-and-a-half after the initial attack, according to a Twitter post by the AKP’s provincial head, Selim Temurci, on Jan. 20. He told reporters later on Jan. 20 that the rocket pierced the wall of the building but did not explode, adding that two assailants were involved in the attack. The rocket reportedly did not explode due to malfunction in the device.

Police determined that the fingerprints on the weapons were the same, and police are evaluating whether Karpat is the second militant involved in the attacks.

The police started a massive manhunt after the attacks and carried out raids. Security forces raided 15 addresses across Turkey’s largest city and five people were taken into custody over suspected links to the attacker.

According to the allegations, Turunç was seen in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district on Jan. 21. He arrived in the Bağlarçeşme neighborhood via a taxi and got out of the vehicle after seeing the police. He then fired on the police vehicle from behind. Clashes erupted after the police fired back.

Turunç entered side-streets during the clashes and managed to escape after leaving a hand grenade and his backpack at the scene. Plenty of police officers and bomb disposal teams were dispatched to the scene. A weapon, hand gloves, rope, medicine and several clothes were found in the backpack.

The police examined the taxi and took fingerprints from it after the incident. The taxi driver, who was not identified, said Turunç threatened him by saying that he was carrying a bomb. The police have been investigating the security cameras around the scene.
