Bangui announces temporary requisition of country's fuel distributor Tamoil

[AFRICANEWS] The Central African Republic(CAR) authorities announced the temporary requisition of six out of eleven Tamoil service stations in Bangui.

These stations will be managed for 45 days to ensure regular fuel supply, salary payments, and tax contributions, as stated by the Minister of Energy Development and Hydraulic Resources, Arthur Bertrand Piri.

Previously, Piri fined Tamoil 200 million CFA francs (about 300,000 euros) for not maintaining fuel supplies.

Despite ongoing disputes since acquiring Total's operations, Tamoil's owner, Rochefort & Associates, remains committed, focusing on reopening provincial stations and resuming airport activities.

For more than a month, CAR has faced a a series of fuel shortage, with Bangui being the hardest hit. Long lines of cars and cycle of violences queue at service stations, hoping to get fuel. While most stations are closed, a few struggle to stay open, working tirelessly to serve customers until they run out of fuel by around 10 am local time. This effort is insufficient as the price per liter has skyrocketed from 2,000 to 3,000 francs.

Street vendors are forced to go to neighboring Congo to procure fuel, reselling it at high prices. The economic impact is already evident, and concerns are growing across the country.

The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned male disc jockeys (DJs) from performing at female-dominated events in the state.

This ban was announced by the Commander General of the board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, at a meeting with the representatives of DJs in the state.

The Hisbah Commander said the decision was necessary to prohibit the mixing of males and females during events, adding that only women would be allowed henceforth to officiate at women’s gatherings.

"As an Islamic state, it is unacceptable for us to allow the indiscriminate mixing of males and females at the same event. This is because this act can promote and spread immorality," he was quoted by Daily Trust as saying.

He mentioned that another meeting had been held with the state's event facility owners and managers to educate them about the essential regulations governing their operations.

In his remarks, the DJs' representative, Ibrahim Abdullahi, also known as DJ Farawa, praised the board for inviting them and instructing them on the new criteria that the board had implemented to regulate their business.

He said, "We are happy with the invitation of the Hisbah board to our union of DJs. They have given us guidelines on the sanctity of prayer times during events, as well as the need to prevent the mixing of males and females during those events."

Ibrahim noted that all DJs performing in the state must adhere to the new guidelines issued by the board to avoid being sanctioned.

He said, "This is why we are calling on all DJs to register with our union in order to benefit from the guidelines that have been issued."

He also warned that non-registered DJs performing in the state would not be protected by the union if found to have violated the Hisbah guidelines.

The army disclosed this on Thursday on its X account, adding that 48 people who were held as hostages by the faceless myrmidons were also rescued during the clash.

"In a separate coordinated effort, troops, alongside the Civilian Joint Task Force and Hybrid Forces Group, launched an offensive operation targeting terrorists' enclaves in Garin Gulukos and Sabil Huda.

"The operation led to the seizure and depletion of the terrorists' logistics, including a Hilux vehicle, a Canter Troops Carrying Vehicle, 7 rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammunition, 2 cycle of violence

The deal, which followed a number of other agreements that universities have announced in an effort to end the protest encampments that have been roiling campuses in the US, appeared to make the school the first American university to agree to an academic boycott of Israel.

"My goal when meeting with students at the encampment was to explore opportunities to make meaningful change, identify common ground and create a safe and inclusive campus for all. I now realize that many of the statements I made in my campuswide message did just the opposite," Lee wrote in a school-wide email.

"In my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, I marginalized other members of our student population and community. I realize the harm that this has caused, and I take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions," he added.

He also stressed in the email that "the points outlined in the message were mine alone" and said he did not consult with the chancellor of the California State University system.

"As I step away on a leave, I will reflect on the harm this has caused and will be working with the chancellor’s office to determine next steps," he said.

According to a copy of the agreement that Lee sent out less than 24 hours earlier, Sonoma State University was reviewing investments in its endowment, after which school administrators and the SJP advisory council "will meet with proper officials to determine a course of action leading to divestment strategies that include seeking ethical alternatives."

"SSU will post and disseminate a disclosure statement related to funding amounts, the use of funding, and conditions attached to funds," the message states.

The following section, titled "academic boycott," notes the school does not have any exchange agreements with Israeli universities and vows that any potential partnerships will be considered "on an annual basis, in conversation with the advisory council of SJP."

"SSU will not pursue or engage in any study abroad programs, faculty exchanges, or other formal collaborations that are sponsored by, or represent, the Israeli state academic and research institutions," the letter says.

"SSU also commits to immediately updating any SSU pamphlets and SSU-hosted websites that may still be circulating or searchable and to remove hosting or linking to any pamphlets, flyers, or brochures advertising the study abroad program where students are encouraged to study abroad in Israel. SSU will make it clear to any students that any such programs are terminated until further notice and not simply suspended," it continues. "SSU remains committed to upholding principles of academic freedom and open scholarly exchange. As such, SSU welcomes opportunities to engage Paleostinian scholars."

The letter says that the SJP advisory committee will be formed "as a mechanism to ensure SSU administration accountability for all agreements," with "the main goal" of working with the school "to review progress on the initiatives listed below."

"The advisory council of SJP will be established through a collaboration between SJP and Sonoma State and will be composed of members from the encampment, faculty, staff, administrators, Paleostinian alumni, and other interested students, as determined by Students for Justice in Paleostine," the message says, adding it "will meet regularly beginning Fall 2024."

The deal announced by Lee was condemned by local Jewish organizations, with the Jewish Community Relations Council Bay Area charging it violated California State University system’s policies against discrimination and a state anti-BDS law, "in addition to elevating anti-Israel groups that advocate for the elimination of the Jewish state."

"The civil rights of Jewish students and faculty are not a bargaining chip that should be used to quell campus unrest," the group said in a statement.

State Senator Scott Wiener accused Lee of aligning Sonoma State University "with BDS, a movement whose goal is the destruction of Israel, home to 7 million Jews."

of the West African Province (ISWAP), Mahmud Mamman Nur Albarnawy, on Sunday surrendered to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Maiduguri, Borno State.

It was learnt that Mahmud Mamman Nur Albarnawy was confirmed to be the senior son of the late ISWAP founder after undergoing profiling at the Command Headquarters of NSCDC in Maiduguri.

Military sources said that men of the command had facilitated his surrender through his uncle in Gamboru Ngala after receiving the information that he was willing to formally surrender to the Nigerian government.

A reliable agent was sent to convey him to Maiduguri. They arrived in Maiduguri on May 11, at about 1pm.

Mahmud was later debriefed and profiled by a command intelligence officer, who revealed that he sneaked out of the Ali Ngulde camp in Mandara Mountain, Gwoza LGA, into Maiduguri and stayed for about a month in Gwange before relocating to Gamboru Ngala with no alarms or distress signals from communities.

Many of his late father's supporters tried to persuade him to return to the Lake Chad area and pledge loyalty to ISWAP, but he refused because of the execution of his father.

He also admitted to taking part in attacks in Bama, Banki, Gwoza, and other locations as a middle-ranking Boko Haram

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, the terrorist top commander was killed on Monday when the army cleared their enclaves of Shabaabul Umma, Garin Panel Beater and Lagara Anguwan Gwaigwai at the heart of the forest.

Zagazola added that the troops and the gunnies clashed in heavy shootouts which resulted in the death of several top Boko Haram commanders including Baga.

Several others escaped with gunshot wounds, according to the counter-terrorism expert.
