UK remands Islamist preacher in custody on terror charges

was remanded in jug by a UK magistrate on Monday, after London’s Metropolitan police charged him with three terrorism offenses.

Choudary, 56, faces charges of belonging to a proscribed organization, addressing meetings to encourage support for a proscribed organization and directing a terrorist organization, the force said.

was also ordered held in jug after he was charged with membership of a proscribed organization.

Both appeared separately at Westminster Magistrates Court in London, which heard that the charges relate to "an extreme form of Islam."

Anjem Choudary’s branch fed fighters to both Al Qaeda and ISIS, being the connection to oodles of vicious men in our archives and beyond.

"Criminal proceedings against Mr. Choudary and Mr. Hussein are now active and they each have the right to a fair trial," he added.

Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring ordered the pair remanded in jug and set their next appearance, at the central criminal courthouse known as the Old Bailey, on August 4.

Choudary, from east London, wore a black jacket and glasses, and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during Monday’s 30-minute court hearing. He was not asked to enter any pleas to the three charges.

A lawyer for Hussein, who is from Edmonton in the Canadian province Alberta, said he would not be entering a plea. The defendant spoke — in a Canadian accent — only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He is alleged to have been in "close contact" with Choudary online to provide "a platform" for the group’s views for around two years, the court heard.

Counterterror officers investigating alleged membership of the proscribed organization arrested both men last Monday, the Metropolitan police has said.

Officers detained Choudary in east London and held Hussein at Heathrow Airport after he arrived on a flight.

The BBC has a photo of the weedy, Canadian-looking Mr. Hussein, adding:

Mr Hussein is charged with being a member of Al Muhajiroun. Prosecutors allege he helped set up its Canadian branch and say he was "in effect working for" Choudary.

An offshoot of Al-Muhajiroun was banned, or proscribed, in 2006 for glorifying terrorism.

That ban was expanded in 2010 to include a number of other names, including Al-Muhajiroun.

Gang who called themselves 'Musketeers' guilty of plotting UK bomb attack

[SkyNews] Police found a "viable" pipe bomb in one of the defendant's cars - the gang claimed an undercover officer had planted the device.

A gang of men who styled themselves as the "musketeers" have been found guilty of plotting a bomb and knife attack in the UK.

Naweed Ali and Khobaib Hussain from Birmingham, and Mohibur Rahman and Tahir Aziz from Stoke-on-Trent, stood trial at the Old Bailey after counter-terror police found a pipe bomb described as "viable".

MI5 and undercover police officers had set up a fake firm in the city called Hero Couriers which employed both Hussain and Ali. The pair were being monitored after earlier terrorist-related convictions.

During Ali's first day working at the Birmingham firm last August, police searched his black Seat car and were surprised to find the bomb alongside ammunition, an imitation handgun and a meat cleaver with the word "kafir" - meaning non-believer - scratched into the blade.

It prompted a major security alert and the area around Florence Street close to the city centre went into lockdown, with the Army's bomb squad tasked with making sure the pipe bomb would not explode.

Latex gloves and industrial tape were also recovered.

Police immediately arrested all four men and seized a large sword which had been stashed in Aziz's car.

Aziz said the sword was for self-defence and claimed he was doing research when asked to explain what he was doing with pages from an al Qaeda pipe bomb-making article.

Jurors were told Hussain had previously handled the same type of pipes used for the bomb on his gas-fitter's course and his DNA was on the roll of tape.

The four men had denied plotting the attack and claimed in court an undercover MI5 officer known as Vincent had planted the bomb in the vehicle.

Ali's car had been parked at the "covert" courier firm while he went to Luton to deliver a parcel.

Vincent was cross-examined over 12 days and repeatedly rejected the allegations against him.

Stephen Kamlish QC suggested Vincent had put a bag of incriminating evidence in Ali's vehicle before MI5 turned up to bug it.

He alleged that was his only window of opportunity as MI5 had already bugged Hussain's car after he had begun working for Hero Couriers the month before.

Jurors agreed with Vincent and, after deliberating for 22 hours, convicted Ali, 29, Hussain, 25, and Rahman, 33, of preparing terrorist acts.

Aziz, 38, was found guilty of the same offence after the jury deliberated for another 20 minutes.

As they were led from the dock, Rahman shouted out: "I hope you're happy with your lies. Lying scumbags."

Next-door neighbours Ali and Hussain had previously been convicted after travelling to Pakistan to attend a terror training camp, although neither man went through with the training.

Rahman had earlier served a five-year sentence for possessing materials linked to terrorism.

The three men met inside HMP Belmarsh in southeast London and went on to plot the pipe bomb attack that was intercepted by the authorities.

West Midlands Police arrested the four men shortly after they discovered the bomb and have been unable to identify where the men had planned to detonate it.

The four are due to be sentenced on Thursday.

Police say the men, who had all denied preparing terrorist acts, were inspired by so-called Islamic State, also known as Daesh.

They were described as "dangerous men" who were committed to carrying out a "mass casualty attack".

Officers said the case was "one of the most complex counter terrorism investigations in a number of years".

The court heard how the members of the gang called themselves the Three Musketeers when exchanging encrypted messages on the Telegram app.

Neighbours Ali and Hussain have previously been jailed for attempting to join an al-Qaeda training camp in Pakistan in 2011.

The trial heard the pair first met Rahman - who had been convicted of possessing an al-Qaeda magazine - while in prison.

Day 4: London Bridge attacker appeared in Channel 4 doc on ‘British jihadis’

one the London Bridge attackers recently identified by police, appeared in a Channel 4 documentary called ‘The Jihadist Next Door’ last year. Police were reportedly alerted after he was filmed praying behind a jihadist Black Standard and attempting to recruit children at a local park.

Butt, 27, from Barking, East London was part of a “group of British extremists intent on spreading their message of global jihad” who appeared in the program.

In the documentary, Butt (wearing all beige) is filmed praying with the Black Standard with white shahada (Islamic creed) flag in the forefront, along with a group of other radical Muslims in the middle of London’s Regent’s Park. The variations of the Black Standard with white shahada has been used by numerous jihadist groups including al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

A police statement released Monday said Butt was known to police and the domestic intelligence agency MI5, but was not thought to have been planning an attack.

Neighbors identify London Bridge attack suspect as man featured in recent documentary

Neighbors have identified one of the London Bridge attack suspects as a man known by the nickname "ABZ" or "Abs" who was featured in a recent documentary on the British Channel 4 from 2016 called "The Jihadist Next Door."

Neighbors say he was the attacker who wore the fake suicide vest during the vehicle and stabbing attack that killed seven people in London on Saturday night.

He was a member of Al Muhajiroun, a small group of men led by Anjem Choudary and Siddartha Dhar who openly preached for the need for Sharia law.

The group was closely monitored by authorities.

According to Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, research director of George Washington University's Program on Extremism, Choudary's network of extremist followers has numbered in the hundreds, and many have been charged with terrorism offenses in the U.K. or fought and died in Syria with ISIS.

"So the potential for more of them to mobilize is still there," said Meleagrou-Hitchens, who has interviewed several members of the group. "Almost all would be known to authorities though ... There are hundreds of members but only small fraction will act. Knowing which ones will is hard and not an exact science."

Another British expert said Al-Muhajiroun has proven time and again that many of those involved with it are truly "dangerous individuals," justifying the British government's 2010 ban on Choudary's group.

"Thwarting plots relies on an element of luck," said Robin Simcox, a terrorism expert at the Heritage Foundation. "And with 23,000 suspects on the radar, the British Security Services simply don't have the capacity to track everyone that is a potential terror threat."

Pakistan-born Khuram Butt, 27, from Barking, east London, who was known to police, had previously worked for London Underground, Transport for London said.

The other was Rachid Redouane, 30, from Barking, who police said claimed to be Moroccan-Libyan. Redouane, who was a chef, also used the name Rachid Elkhdar and a different birth date. He was not known to police.

He had also lived for a time in Dublin, Ireland's RTE reports.

Redouane married a British woman in Ireland in 2011 before moving back to the UK, it added. They both returned to Ireland in 2016 for a short time before separating.

Documentation, believed to be an identity card, was found after he was shot dead, the broadcaster says.

Barriers are being built on a number of bridges in London following Saturday's attack. They have been described by the Metropolitan Police as "increased security measures".

Westminster Bridge, where a man ploughed a car into pedestrians in March, was the the first to have them installed, the Met said.

Sky News reports that police found Molotov cocktails in the back of the hired van used in the London Bridge attack. At least a dozen bottles filled with clear liquid, which had rags stuffed in their tops, were found in the back of the hired van, and police had treated them as though they were petrol bombs, Sky News said citing unnamed sources.

The third dead attacker is not a UK citizen.

Barriers have been installed on three central London bridges following the latest terror attack to hit the capital. The structures have been introduced to stop traffic from mounting the pavement on Westminster, Lambeth and Waterloo bridges.

Al Muhajiroun -- Al Qaeda's New Branch In Kenya

[Intel Briefs] Al Qaeda has established a new dedicated branch for Kenya. The branch, called Al Muhajiroun, is subordinated to Somalia-based Al Shabaab as it is still at its infancy. Later on, Al Qaeda hopes that it will exists an an independent functional terror outfit. Al Muhajiroun appears to be made up entirely of members of Ansar al Mujahideen. One of its senior leaders is Ahmed Iman Ali (alias Abu Zinnrah), the former leader of MYC (Muslim Youth Centre which has rebranded itself as Al Hijra) and former chairman of Pumwani Riyadha Mosque.

Ansar al Mujahideen has fought alongside Harakat-al-Shabaab-al-Mujahideen (HSM) in Somalia as a separate but cohesive unit made up of foreign jihadists. HSM has acknowledged, acceded and recognized their efforts in prolonging the lifespan of the Islamist insurgency in Somalia.

Al Qaeda, noting the limitations of Al Shabaab, has decided to create a new branch for exporting jihad into Kenya and East Africa in general; and Al Muhajiroun is the result.

Members of Al Muhajiroun are predominantly from Kenya, Canada, Australia and France. The members have made baya’ah (an oath of allegiance) to the emir of Al Shabaab,Sheikh Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah. Al-Muhajiroun – as Emigrants of East Africa – has also made a collective solemn and irrevocable baya’ah to Ayman al Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda; and also recognizes him as the overall leader of Jihadists in East Africa.

One of the senior leaders of al Muhajiroun is of Kenyan extraction and goes by the moniker Abu Salim al-Kenyi; and who SIS has identified as non-other than Ahmed Iman Ali.

Though the group main focus of operation is Kenya, its chief objectives are to spread jihad in East Africa as well as recalibrating Islamic discourse in the region so that it aligns to a strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islamic teachings.

I hadn't heard of al-Muhajiroun before, outside the Anjem Chaudry organization in Britain.
The communiqués also reveal that al-Shabaab intelligence cells established in Kenya were mainly staffed by Somalis, Tanzanian Moslems and a few Kenyan converts. Al Muhajiroun has criticized the make-up of such cells, as their composition hinders the cell members from blending smoothly into the local population as language barriers, foreign accents and unbecoming names give the cell members away. In Mombasa, one terror cell was led by Sheikh Buda while in Nairobi an Amniyaat agent known as Ruta faced difficulties due to his foreign mannerism. Ruta was killed during a counter-terrorism operation.

Omar Bakri charged with forming terror cell in Lebanon

British exiled ~~terrorist~~ radical preacher Omar Bakri, an Islamic cleric who is believed to be linked to the London bombers is facing the death sentence in Lebanon, after the authorities here charged him on Monday with a host of terrorist indictments.

Old habits die hard...

Bakri was arrested on May 25, after a crackdown by the Lebanese government on ~~terrorist~~ extremist groups operating in Tripoli in northern Lebanon. According to reports on Tuesday, a military judge has formally charged Bakri with being the mastermind of a terrorist cell in Tripoli, Lebanon, his adopted home since fleeing the UK in 2005.

It's the second time in Lebanon that he has faced charges of terrorist activities. In 2010 Bakri was held briefly on similar charges before Hezbollah group struck a deal with him and released him. He was held under house arrest since.

Is there a reason why we can't just drone-zap him?

According to reports, Bakri, who was once the subject of terrorist investigations in the UK, was interrogated by a Lebanese military judge on Monday before being charged with organising a terrorist cell in Northern Lebanon responsible for a number of attacks on Army and civilian locations - which claimed the lives of 30 earlier in the year.

Bakri, whose real name is Omar Bakri Fustoq, was arrested on May 25 and has always denied being part of Al Qaeda although he regularly speaks highly of their affiliated ~~terrorist~~ groups both in Syria and in Lebanon. His own ~~terrorist~~ extremist group in the UK also had many Al Qaeda amongst its ranks.

Authorities here believe that he is linked to Al Qaeda and is responsible for a series of ~~terrorist~~ attacks both on Army personal in recent months and inciting sectarian fighting in Tripoli which left 30 dead and over 160 wounded.

Omar Bakri, believed to be 54 now, was previously the London-based spiritual leader of the ~~terrorist~~ extremist group Al Muhajiroun. Bakri was under investigation by UK police after he called for young British Muslims to take up arms and join Al Qaeda.

On the London bombings It was also reported that Bakri referred to the four suicide bombers who killed 56 people on July 7 as "the fantastic four". He said the British people were to blame for the terror attacks on the capital because they "did not make enough effort to stop its own government committing its own atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan". He also sparked outrage when he said on TV that he would not inform police if he knew Muslims were planning a bomb attack on a train in the UK and supported Muslims who attacked British troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In March he told Khaleej Times when speaking of the troubles in Tripoli "only jihad salafi can save it and save Lebanon" adding "and this country needs to be made an Islamic state, obviously" he says. "Guys like me thrive on chaosâŚand that is what you have in Lebanon now" he added.

Bakri praises UK knifeman 'courage'

[NEWS.YAHOO] A Syrian-born Islamist holy man who taught one of the men accused of hacking to death an off-duty British soldier on a London street praised the attack for its "courage" and said Mohammedans would see it as a strike on a military target.

, northern Leb, where he has lived since being banished from Britannia in 2005, Omar Bakri, founder of banned British Islamist group Al Muhajiroun, said he knew suspect Michael Adebolajo from his lectures a decade ago.

"When I saw the footage I recognized the face immediately," Bakri told Rooters. "I used to know him. A quiet man, very shy, asking lots of questions about Islam."

"What surprised me (is) the quiet man, the man who is very shy, decided to carry out an attack against a British soldier in the middle of the day in the middle of a street in the UK. In east London. It's incredible.

"When I saw that, honestly I was very surprised - standing firm, courageous, brave. Not running away. Rather, he said why he carried (it out) and he wanted the whole world to hear it."

The attack has been vociferously condemned by Mohammedan organizations across Britannia.

Adebolajo, 28, a British-born convert from a Christian Nigerian immigrant family, went by the nickname Mujahid - warrior - after taking up Islam as a teenager in a suburb on the northeast outskirts of London.

He was filmed with his hands still covered with the blood of Afghan war veteran Lee Rigby, 25, after the attack. Clutching a butcher's knife and meat cleaver, he said the killing was Dire Revenge for British participation in wars in foreign countries.

He and a second knife-wielding attacker, Nigerian-born naturalized British citizen Michael Adebowale, 22, are in hospital after being shot by police during their arrest. They have yet to be charged. Police have also jugged

The interview with Bakri in his flat in the Abu Samra district of Tripoli was twice interrupted by his infant son Osama, who broke into the room playing with a plastic toy. The boy was named after slain al Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden

"He is supposed to go fight (U.S. President Barack) Obama in the future, and maybe to deal with the Obama of his times. We called him after... Sheikh Osama," Bakri said, smiling often as he spoke but lacing light-hearted comments with hints of menace.

Islamic extremists pelt eggs at Muslim Baroness Warsi

The shadow minister for community cohesion and social action had been meeting local businesses with Tory candidates when she was attacked just before 5pm on Monday.

Up to 10 local British male protesters, believed to be members of the controversial Al Muhajiroun group, started shouting abuse at the Peer, accusing her of not being a proper Muslim and supporting the deaths of Muslims in Afghanistan. Members of the group then threw several eggs at her, with one hitting her on the side of the head and another soiling her jacket.

Baroness Warsi, the country's most powerful female Muslim, was not injured during the attack in the city's Bury Park area. Amid concerns for her safety, witnesses said Baroness Warsi refused to run from the group, but instead started remonstrating with them, later branding them "extremists" who did not represent the views of British Muslims. She later retreated into a sari shop.

Despite police being called, no one was arrested for the attack which was universally condemned by locals.

Brushing off the incident last night, the Tory Peer later addressed a local meeting, where she branded the group "idiots and vile" who did not represent Muslim views and were "clearly repulsed with me". She said they were similar to Nick Griffin, the British National Party leader, who only wanted to divide society and preach hatred.

It is believed the protesters were from the same group of Mulims who earlier this year marred the homecoming of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment through Luton. That protest, where they jeered 200 soldiers and waved placards calling them "Butchers of Basra", "murderers" and "baby-killers, led to fury from families of soldiers and was condemned by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Britain's former most senior Muslim police officer, Tarique Ghaffur.

Baroness Warsi, who appeared on the BBC's Question Time alongside Mr Griffin last month, said she decided to stand up to the group because she wanted a proper debate with them. Instead, she said, the group failed to articulate any arguments and only "brought Muslims into disrepute".

"The people of Luton absolutely condemn these people," she told The Daily Telegraph after speaking at the local meeting. "British Muslims throughout the country are saying these people are doing this not in my name, they don't represent me in any way. Their views are not even in line with the faith of Islam. I would say to them they are like extremists and those people who preach hatred. They want to create tension and unrest."

She added: "There are underlying, very serious issues, very difficult issues to address but if I take these sorts of incidents too personally and take them to heart, we won't change anything.

"I am a criminal defence lawyer from Yorkshire, it is going to take a bit more than a few eggs to stop me. The last Tory to be pelted with eggs in Luton was John Major in 1992, and he went on to win the election, so maybe this is a really omen."

Saiful Islam, a member of the group which wants Sharia law to be implemented in Britain, denied his group were behind the attacks but added: "Baroness Warsi purports to be a Muslim but really she's just pushing a government agenda. She should be received with condemnation. She is clearly in opposition to Sharia."

Despite local residents urging her to press charges, Baroness Warsi declined.
