The 12-day war and silent transformations of western Asia, Part I: Iraq and Turkey
2025-07-05
The view from Kurdistan, at length. Part II: PKK and Iran will be published tomorrow.
[Rudaw] The 12-day Israel— style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Iran '>Iran
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
war stands as one of the most consequential events of the first quarter of the 21st century, with the potential to reshape both the economic landscape and the political-security dynamics of western Asia. Much like the Six-Day Arab—Israeli War of 1967, which extended beyond mere territorial occupation, the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel was not solely about missile exchanges and nuclear ambitions.

Beyond the overt military dimensions, the war was also aimed at strategically distancing Tehran from its deepening ties with China and Russia, while simultaneously curbing the expansion of the pan-Shia movement led by Iran. In this sense, the conflict served a role analogous to that of the 1967 war, which effectively halted the rise of the pan-Arab movement spearheaded by Gamal Abdel Nasser and supported by Moscow.

Regardless of whether it is referred to as Operation Rising Lion, True Promise, or Midnight Hammer, it is evident that this war is quietly transforming the regional landscape. Syria appears to be entering a new phase aimed at establishing the foundations of governance, while the regional influence of both style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Turkey'>The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

and the Gulf states is expanding. In parallel, the issue of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) disarmament has progressed into a new stage, influenced by the broader consequences of the conflict.

The war has turned Iraq and the Kurdistan Region into arenas for two major regional rivalries. On one front, these areas have become a battleground for military competition between Iran and Israel, a dynamic that has pushed Iraq’s internal situation to the edge of crisis where unknown drones have emerged as key players in shaping the security environment. On another front, Iraq is increasingly becoming a site of strategic contention between style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Turkish'> style="text-decoration-line: line-through; text-decoration-style: double;">Ottoman Turkish and Iranian interests.

Additionally, the war - and even the anticipation of it - has compelled Turkey to quietly engage in a discourse aimed at redefining its nation-state identity, particularly through the rhetoric of style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Turkish'> style="text-decoration-line: line-through; text-decoration-style: double;">Ottoman Turkish—Kurdish brotherhood. Simultaneously, within Iran, a growing debate between the ultra-conservative faction and other elements of the political elite reflects yet another dimension of the war’s subtle but enduring influence - an influence that appears likely to persist.

IRAQ BETWEEN THE HAMMER OF WAR AND THE ANVIL OF RIVALRY
Iraq’s current situation appears increasingly precarious as the country approaches elections under the shadow of both ongoing regional conflict and intensifying geopolitical rivalry - developments that may, as in previous instances, prove decisive for its future. In relation to the recent war, Iraq has formally protested the violation of its airspace style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='sovereignty'>illusory sovereignty. style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='However,'>However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
this issue is only one dimension of a broader and more complex set of challenges. On the day the conflict ended, two of Iraq’s radar systems were destroyed, and in the days that followed, unidentified drones have emerged as a growing security concern, appearing in areas ranging from Kirkuk to Sulaimani and
Duhok. The Iraqi government is currently conducting investigations to determine the origins of these incursions.

While some have speculated that the style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Islamic State'>Islamic State
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) may be responsible, this theory does not align with the group’s current limited military and organizational capabilities. In reality, only three regional actors possess the capacity to conduct such drone operations across the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk: Turkey, Iran and its affiliated "resistance" groups, and Israel.

At a time when the world is closely monitoring PKK disarmament negotiations, it is unlikely that Turkey would risk undermining the process, especially since the nature and targets of the drone activity do not suggest style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Turkish'> style="text-decoration-line: line-through; text-decoration-style: double;">Ottoman Turkish involvement.

Both Iran and Israel remain highly sensitive to the strategic positioning of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq more broadly. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, the Kurdistan Region adopted a stance of silent neutrality during the recent conflict. style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='However,'>However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
this neutrality has failed to satisfy either Iran or Israel, each of which interprets the Region’s posture through its own security and strategic lens. Whether war resumes or not, the Kurdistan Region’s geographic and strategic location renders it critically important to the offensive and defensive calculations of both parties.

At this stage, the identity of the actors behind the drone incidents remains unknown. Nonetheless, the prevailing interpretation is that these incidents constitute strategic signaling - intended more as a message than as direct acts of aggression or destruction. The ambiguity surrounding these developments underscores the fragile and volatile security environment in which Iraq now finds itself - caught between the hammer of regional warfare and the anvil of great-power rivalry.

Another point is that the possibility of Iraq being caught up in war due to the balance of power in the region is always open, because Iraq is important to Iran to protect its last regional bastion, but it’s also important to Israel to keep a gateway to reach Iran open and prevent a problem from forming through Iraq. It seems that in the future, beyond security and military matters, Iraq will increasingly become a field of economic competition and influence between Turkey and Iran, and this will translate into political tension.

Iran has increasingly focused on developing its economic relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. In 2020, Iran’s trade volume with Iraq did not reach $6 billion, while Turkey positioned itself at around $17 billion. Since then, it has continuously tried to turn toward the Iraqi market, and in 2024 it reduced its gap with Turkey. Iran’s economic losses after the fall of style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Bashir al-Assad'>Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
are estimated at around $30-50 billion. It is estimated that the 12-day war also cost it between $24 and 35 billion. If international sanctions are to return by October 18, then it must grip the Iraqi market with teeth and claws, as it seems like the last resort for its economy. Mohsen Rezaee, former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, once said that we cannot fight wars for countries while their benefits go to other countries.

A DOUBLE-SIX FOR TURKEY AND THE GULF, AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SYRIA
The recent conflict has elevated the regional prominence of both Turkey and the Gulf states. For these actors, the simultaneous weakening of Iran and Israel constitutes a strategic gain - akin to a "double six" in backgammon - provided that the hostilities remain confined within the borders of the two principal belligerents. At the same time, both Turkey and the Gulf countries are vying with Oman for the opportunity to host prospective negotiations between Iran and the United States, if such talks prove feasible.

From Turkey’s perspective, the Iran—Israel war represents the weakening of two of its major regional competitors. style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='However,'>However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
had the conflict intensified or triggered sudden political upheaval in Iran, it could have posed a direct threat to style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Turkish'> style="text-decoration-line: line-through; text-decoration-style: double;">Ottoman Turkish security. Despite this risk, the war appears to have drawn Turkey and the United States into closer alignment. The US ambassador in Ankara has publicly stated that Turkey might be readmitted into the F-35 fighter jet program. Additionally, Turkey was reportedly one of the few countries briefed by the United States shortly before Israel launched its attack.

It appears that Turkey has played - and possibly continues to play - a role in the diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. This includes mediating between Iran and the United States, as well as between style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Hamas'>Hamas
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>..a regional Iranian catspaw,...
and the US. In the event that an agreement is reached between Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa faction and Israel, it would signify a potential normalization of relations between Turkey and Israel. Such a reconciliation would not only alleviate long-standing political and security concerns, but also facilitate more stable and reliable access to the Syrian market - particularly significant given the recent partial lifting of US sanctions on Syria under the Trump administration.

The aftermath of the war has also encouraged Sharaa to move closer to Israel, thereby strengthening his position and increasing his chances of consolidating political authority in Syria. This shift could signal broader transformations in the geopolitical dynamics of the region.

Syria willing to work with US on return to 1974 disengagement deal with Israel
2025-07-05
[IsraelTimes] Statement by Syrian FM comes as Washington seeks Syria-Israel normalization; accord created UN-patrolled buffer zone, which Israel seized following ouster of Assad in December

Syria said Friday that it was willing to cooperate with Washington to reimplement the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel, which created a UN-patrolled buffer zone separating the two countries’ forces.

In a statement following a phone call with his US counterpart style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Marco Rubio'>Marco Rubio

, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed Syria’s "aspiration to cooperate with the United States to return to the 1974 disengagement agreement."

Washington has been pushing diplomatic efforts towards a normalization deal between Syria and Israel, with US envoy Thomas Barrack saying last week that peace between the two was now needed.

Speaking to The style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='New York Times'>New York Times

s on military targets in Syria and carried out incursions deeper into the country’s south.

Israel has also deployed its troops into the UN-patrolled zone separating Syrian and Israeli forces under the 1974 agreement.

Israel says the accord fell apart since one of the sides was no longer in a position to implement it, and that the military action in Syria was a defensive move to protect the country from potential hostile forces that could have exploited the power vacuum. Israeli officials have referred to Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa as a "terrorist" due to his past affiliation with al-Qaeda.

Syria and Israel have technically been in a state of war since 1948, the year Israel was established.

Israel conquered around two-thirds of the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six Day War of June 1967, and annexed the territory in 1981, in a move not recognized by much of the international community, with the exception of the United States.

A year after the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, Israel and Syria reached an agreement on a disengagement line.

As part of the deal, an 80 kilometer-long (50-mile-long) style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='United Nations'>United Nations

Syrian state media reported on Wednesday that "statements concerning signing a peace agreement with the Israeli occupation at this time are considered premature."

Britain
Former UK Labour leader Corbyn, ousted over antisemitism, to found new party
2025-07-05
Welcome to Britains’s New Left party — all Jew-hate all the time. And socialism, gooder and harder.
[IsraelTimes] Jeremy Corbyn says Starmer’s government has ‘refused to deliver the change’; lawmaker who supported Palestinian violence says she’ll join him in new left-wing party

Former UK Labour Party leader style=color:green;font-weight:bold;>Jeremy Corbyn announced on Friday he was in talks to start a new political party because Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government had "refused to deliver the change" that voters expected during its first year in office.

Labour suspended Corbyn in 2020 and then kicked him out of the party following a report into how antisemitism complaints were handled under his leadership, which he refused to fully accept.

"The democratic foundation of a new kind of political party will take shape soon," Corbyn said on X. "Discussions are ongoing — and I am excited to work alongside all communities to fight for the future people deserve."

The announcement that Labour could face a new threat from a left-wing party came after a bruising week for the government when it was forced to abandon key planks of planned welfare reform, which blew a hole in its budget plans.

Since winning the general election last year, Starmer has seen his personal popularity slump, and Labour now consistently trails the style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title=' insurgent'> hard boy, right-wing Reform UK party, which is led by Nigel Farage, the pro-Brexit campaigner.

Corbyn, who was elected an independent member of parliament last year, said the "Labour government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved."

"Poverty, inequality and war are not inevitable," he said. "Our country needs to change direction, now."

On Thursday evening, style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='lawmaker'>politician style=color:green;font-weight:bold;>Zarah Sultana said she was leaving Labour and planned to launch the new party with Corbyn.

In since-deleted social media posts from 2015, Sultana said she would celebrate the deaths of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, former US President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She also wrote that she supports " style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='violent'>violent mostly peaceful resistance" by Paleostinians and that Zionism is a racist ideology.

A landmark October 2020 report by the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission ruled that Labour under Corbyn had broken the law in its "inexcusable" handling of complaints about antisemitism.

The period saw Jewish members and style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='lawmaker'>politicians leave the party in droves as criticism of Israel and Zionism veered into toxic antisemitism from Corbyn supporters.

The party suspended Corbyn in 2020 after he claimed opponents had "dramatically overstated" the scale of antisemitism in Labour for "political reasons." He had represented Labour in parliament since 1983 and now sits as an independent style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='lawmaker'>politician.

[IsraelTimes] Israeli officials involved in investigation said to be left in dark over why it was nixed, though suspect it may have to do with ongoing efforts with Doha to reach hostage deal

i American lobbyist Jay Footlik, who is suspected of directly financing Qatargate suspect Jonatan Urich’s alleged activities, Hebrew media reported Thursday.

The inquiry was to take place in the US in coordination with the Israel Police, and was expected to bring style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='investigators'>Sherlocks and prosecuting attorneys one step closer to deciding whether or not to indict Urich, a close aide of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is suspected of being paid to boost Qatar’s image while in his employ.

According to i24 news, however, the US Justice Department informed Footlik Thursday that it had cancelled the July 9 inquiry, without offering any explanation as to why.

Israeli officials involved in the investigation have also been left in the dark as to why it was canceled, Hebrew media outlet Ynet reported.

They suspect, however, that it may be due to the personal and political considerations of US President style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Donald Trump'>Donald Trump

Urich, together with Netanyahu’s former military affairs spokesperson Eli Feldstein, is suspected of multiple offenses tied to their alleged work for a pro-Qatar lobbying firm. They are suspected of contact with a foreign agent and breach of trust, due to what prosecutors believe was their work to improve Doha’s image as a hostage negotiation mediator while simultaneously working as advisers to Netanyahu.

The investigation has broadened, and several former style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='senior security official'>security bigshots are suspected of involvement in helping transfer money from Doha to Urich and Feldstein.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara indicated last month that she would soon file an indictment against Urich.

i24 also reported that Baharav-Miara will request that Serbia extradite Yisrael Einhorn, a former Netanyahu aide who is also involved in the affair due to his public relations firm Perception, which he ran alongside Urich.

The two spearheaded a pro-Qatari campaign to cast the Gulf state in a positive light ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, hosted in Doha, according to Hebrew media reports at the time.

Europe
‘Israelis not welcome’: Milan Jews rattled by surge in antisemitic incidents
2025-07-05
Odds are good it was done by some poor shmoe paid by Iran to stir up trouble, just like the Jewish and Arab idiots they’ve been rounding up in Israel.
[IsraelTimes] Anti-Jewish hate crimes in Italy nearly doubled in 2024, watchdog finds — but the local community says it still receives significant support from the wider Italian society

On June 26, Afshin Kaboli woke up to a flood of WhatsApp messages from personal contacts and group chats with fellow members of Milan’s Jewish community.

During the night, unknown individuals had put up dozens of posters around the city’s Jewish neighborhoods reading, in broken English, "Israeli not welcome." Some were hung a few hundred yards from the community’s Jewish school on the same block where Kaboli, 54, lives and runs a kosher bakery.

"I went to check and found the posters in two spots in the neighborhood, even though, by the time I arrived, some of them had already been removed," Kaboli told The Times of Israel via telephone.

"It made me feel awful," he said. "The atmosphere has been heavy these past few months. But finding something like this just 200 meters [650 feet] from my home really makes me think. I always thought these things happened in style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='France'>La Belle France or other countries, not in Milan."

The city is home to a community of about 7,000 Jews. Despite its small size, the community boasts at least a dozen active synagogues, three Jewish schools, and several kosher restaurants and grocery stores.

For Kaboli, the fact that the posters were directed at "Israelis," as opposed to Jews, does not make a difference.

"They say Israeli, but they mean Jews and everyone who does not dissociate themselves from what happens in style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Gaza'>Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
," he said. "We are all included, and in my case, even more so since my wife is Israeli."

The posters are just the latest in a series of episodes that have been making Milanese Jews increasingly uncomfortable.

The previous week, two Jewish teens aged 17 and 15, one of them openly wearing a kippah, the other a baseball cap, were attacked, beaten, and robbed by three aggressors, all underage, of Egyptian origin.

A few weeks earlier, a Jewish man was attacked by two men after they spotted him wearing a Star of David necklace. In May, a crafts store in an elegant street in the city center put up a sign in Italian reading, "Zionists and Israelis are not welcome."

According to the president of the community, Walker Meghnagi, 75, local Jews are concerned, but they do not live in fear.

"I would say that the sentiment among community members is one of surprise and concern for what has been happening, but not fear," Meghnagi told The Times of Israel.

Meghnagi also said the distinction between attacking Jews and attacking the Jewish state is ultimately irrelevant.

"Diaspora Jews must stand with Israel," he said. "Some might not like the government, but Israel is not the government — Israel is the Land. People use this against us, but in the end, it’s just an excuse."

"We are Italians of the Jewish religion, and we must keep our heads high and be respected for what we are," he added.

The most recent report by the Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea (CDEC), a Milan-based think tank that monitors antisemitism in style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia, revealed that in 2024, its antisemitism watchdog received 877 complaints about antisemitic incidents in the country, compared to 454 in 2023 and 241 in 2022.

The recorded incidents included physical aggression against people, antisemitic graffiti, and threats or insults on social media.

In addition to what was reported to the CDEC by the public, its staff also independently documented some 4,000 instances of antisemitic discourse online.

A SUPPORTIVE GOVERNMENT
According to Meghnagi, Italian police are doing an excellent job in protecting Jewish sites.

"We have the best police in Europe, they are everywhere and act very fast," he said. "All the synagogues, Jewish sites, and schools are under constant protection."

Officers informed Meghnagi that the posters had been put up by a small group of Italian youths.

" style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='However,'>However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
in light of the complexity of the operation, they must have had some external funding and backing," he said.

Meghnagi also praised the current Italian government.

"The government is pro-Israel and very active in defending the Jewish community," he said.

When Giorgia Meloni became style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia’s first female prime minister in 2022, her government was met with suspicion both at home and abroad due to the style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='fascist'>fascist

roots of her party, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia).

Fratelli d’Italia is the political heir to the openly fascist party founded in post-World War II style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia. Meloni — along with several of her close associates — has made statements in the past that were seen as sympathetic to fascist ideology. Three years later, however, Meloni is mainly viewed as a staunchly conservative leader within the mainstream consensus, working closely with European allies as well as the Trump administration.

On the other hand, Meghnagi criticized left-wing political forces in style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia, whose actions or silence he blames for the current political climate.

In the past six months, Milan Mayor Beppe Sala declined when urged to light up the municipality building to commemorate Kfir and Ariel Bibas, the young children taken hostage and murdered by style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Hamas'>Hamas

, but agreed to do so in solidarity with Gaza.

Last month, three Italian regions — Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany— announced they would sever ties with Israeli authorities. In a separate incident, the city of Sesto Fiorentino, with a population of 50,000, decided that its municipal pharmacies would no longer sell Israeli-made medicines and cosmetics.

All the local government representatives in these incidents belong to left or center-left parties.

"Those politicians do have an impact on at least part of the public opinion, especially those who are less informed about the situation," said Meghnagi. "This is harmful and absurd."

’BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE’
Emanuele Fiano has made it his life’s mission to cultivate a relationship with those on style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia’s left and educate them about antisemitism and Israel.

The son of an Auschwitz survivor, the 62-year-old Fiano is a former president of Milan’s Jewish Community and a former Member of Parliament for the Partito Democratico (PD), style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia’s largest center-left party. He has been living under police protection for 15 years, largely due to the antisemitic threats he receives.

Today, he serves as the secretary of Sinistra per Israele (Left-wing for Israel), a group established in the aftermath of the Six-Day War after a political shift against Israel among left-wing parties.

Fiano believes it is essential to distinguish between antisemitism and other forms of anti-Israel sentiment.

"I’m deeply concerned about three things: the rise in antisemitism, the misuse of the accusation itself, and the increasingly complex overlap — even for experts — between antisemitism, anti-Israel sentiment, and anti-Zionism," he told The Times of Israel.

Fiano said that while episodes of discrimination and hatred against Israelis were horrible and wrong, they should not be confused with antisemitism.

"I believe that discriminating against Israelis — something that isn’t done to Russians, Iranians, or others — is a terrible form of racism and hatred," he said. "But I’d be cautious about saying it means these people hate all Jews."

Fiano mentioned how, on June 14, representatives of the Jewish LGBTQ group Keshet style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Europe '>Europa
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
were insulted and threatened while participating in the Rome Pride parade with their rainbow flags featuring a Star of David.

"The Star of David has been a Jewish symbol for centuries," he said. "If a Star of David triggers insults and hatred, this is antisemitism."

Fiano explained that he faces criticism both from the left and those who want to condemn Israel "without any ifs, ands, or buts," as well as from some in the Jewish community because he is critical of the Netanyahu government.

"I feel caught between a rock and a hard place, and I’m exhausted," he said. "Still, I believe the work we’re doing matters — and it’s bringing some results."

Fiano recalled, for instance, how the Coop Italia supermarket chain — which last month announced plans to stop selling Israeli products — reversed its decision after Sinistra per Israele intervened, arguing that boycotting an entire country was wrong.

A SHOW OF SOLIDARITY
Despite the challenges, Meghnagi and Kaboli emphasized that the June 26 poster incident was followed by expressions of solidarity.

"The city reacted in an exemplary way," Meghnagi said. "Many, including people who are not members of our community, worked to take down the posters."

Kaboli, who, in addition to running the bakery, also owns the Denzel burger house — one of the city’s most popular kosher restaurants, drawing a vast Jewish and non-Jewish clientele — said that many people reached out to him.

"One thing that I felt good about was that when I shared photos of the posters on Facebook, many people outside the Jewish community responded — not just with comments, but also with messages and calls expressing their shock and dismay at seeing this kind of behavior in Milan," Kaboli said.

Still, some concerns remain.

"Until recently, people in the community felt Milan was safe," Kaboli said. "I send my 5-year-old son to the Jewish school. I would never consider doing otherwise, but we need to remain vigilant more than ever."

as a standoff deepens over their return to the country’s nuclear facilities bombed by the United States and Israel.

Israel launched its first military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites in a 12-day war with the style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Islamic Republic'>Islamic Theocratic Republic three weeks ago. The style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='International Atomic Energy Agency'>ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency’s inspectors have not been able to inspect Iran’s facilities since then, even though IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has said that that is his top priority.

Iran’s parliament has now passed a law to suspend cooperation with the IAEA until the safety of its nuclear facilities can be guaranteed. While the IAEA says Iran has not yet formally informed it of any suspension, it is unclear when the agency’s inspectors will be able to return to Iran.

"An IAEA team of inspectors today safely departed from Iran to return to the Agency headquarters in Vienna, after staying in Tehran throughout the recent military conflict," the IAEA said on X.

Diplomats said the number of IAEA inspectors in Iran was reduced to a handful after the June 13 start of the war. Some have also expressed concern about the inspectors’ safety since the end of the conflict, given fierce criticism of the agency by Iranian officials and Iranian media.

Iran has accused the agency of effectively paving the way for the bombings by issuing a damning report on May 31 that led to a resolution by the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors declaring Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has said he stands by the report. He has denied that it provided diplomatic cover for military action.

IAEA WANTS TALKS
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday that Iran remained committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"(Grossi) reiterated the crucial importance of the IAEA discussing with Iran modalities for resuming its indispensable monitoring and verification activities in Iran as soon as possible," the IAEA said.

The US and Israeli military strikes either destroyed or badly damaged Iran’s three uranium enrichment sites. But it was less clear what happened to much of Iran’s nine tons of enriched uranium, especially the more than 400 kilograms enriched to up to 60 percent purity, a short step from weapons grade.

That is enough, if enriched further, for nine nuclear weapons, according to an IAEA yardstick. Iran says its aims are entirely peaceful, but there is no civil justification for enriching to such a high level, and the IAEA says no country has done so without developing an atom bomb.

As a party to the NPT, Iran must account for its enriched uranium, which is normally closely monitored by the IAEA, the body that enforces the NPT and verifies countries’ declarations. But the bombing of Iran’s facilities has now muddied the waters.

"We cannot afford that .... the inspection regime is interrupted," Grossi told a style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='press conference'>presser in Vienna last week.

How not to influence President Trump: 550 ex-senior Israeli security officials urge Trump to leverage Netanyahu meeting to end Gaza war

Remember when American current and former intelligence officials penned a letter sharing their opinion? I bet President Trump does. I imagine Bibi is clever enough to remember, too, unlike this lot of arrogant fools.
[IsraelTimes] The head of a group representing over 550 former senior Israeli security officials has penned a letter to US President style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Donald Trump'>Donald Trump

Coming out against Netanyahu’s prosecution of the war, Vilnai writes that further fighting "risks the lives of hostages, will continue to cost yet more IDF casualties and prolong the suffering of innocent Paleostinians."

Explosive-laden drone intercepted near Erbil airport
2025-07-05
[Rudaw] Local counterterrorism forces said an explosive-laden drone was intercepted in the skies of style=color:navy;font-weight:bold;>Erbil late Thursday, with no casualties reported.

The drone was downed at 9:58 pm local time near Erbil International Airport but "did not cause any casualties or material damage," the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD), which is part of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), said on Facebook.

Earlier in the evening, Rudaw published CCTV footage showing the moment the drone fell in a village near the airport.

There are reports of flight cancellations at the airport.

Lawand Mamundi, CEO of Erbil Fly, told Rudaw that none of the flights of his company have been cancelled.

CCTV footage shows an apparent explosion near Erbil airport.

An explosive drone crashed in Sulaimani province's Garmiyan administration Thursday afternoon without causing casualties, a spokesperson for security forces said.

Remains of a suspected drone were found in Kirkuk late Thursday.

It is not clear where these drones originate from, but they are believed to be related to the latest deadly war between style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Iran '>Iran
style='color:black;font-size:10pt;font-weight:bold;font-family:courier,"Courier New","Courier 10 Pitch",serif;background:#FFFB99'>...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. and Israel.

The renewed drone activity follows the US-brokered ceasefire that went into effect on June 24, ending the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. During the conflict, numerous drones and rockets flew through the airspace of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, where several drones fell or were intercepted.
The Times of Israel points out:
In the past days, drone and rocket attacks have been reported in different parts of Iraq, including drones that landed in open spaces.

Earlier on Thursday, an explosive-packed drone fell near Kirkuk airport, which was struck on Monday by two rockets, a senior security official told AFP.

Kirkuk airport hosts Iraqi army units, federal police, and the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of pro-Iran former paramilitary forces now integrated into the regular armed forces.

Early on Tuesday, Iraq’s anti-aircraft defense engaged at least one drone near the key refinery of Baiji in Salaheddin province.

Last week, hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war, unidentified drones struck radar systems at two military bases in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

Iraq has long been a battleground of drone and rocket assaults and has proved a fertile ground for proxy wars.

The country has only recently regained a semblance of stability after decades of devastating conflicts and turmoil.

Kurdish farmer disappears in Kirkuk, ISIS suspected
2025-07-05
[Rudaw] A Kurdish farmer disappeared Wednesday night in Iraq’s disputed style=color:navy;font-weight:bold;>Kirkuk province, leaving his family and authorities perplexed after his cash and phone were found untouched in his truck. The suspected abduction of the father of four underscored the critical security vacuum in the region.

Forty-year-old Ari Ramazan disappeared in Prde (Altun Kupri) sub-district, 40 kilometers northwest of Kirkuk city, while returning from his orchard, according to his family who suspect the style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Islamic State'>Islamic State

(ISIS) is responsible.

"He is a farmer and all farmers this year are not doing well and their crops haven't made money. He was at his orchard and when he was leaving, they kidnapped him. He is married and has four children. This has become his daily route," Shwan Baqir, a relative of Ramazan, told Rudaw on Saturday.

Ramazan’s truck was found near the village of Kalur between Prde and Kirkuk city. His phone and six million Iraqi dinars were left untouched, according to information obtained by Rudaw.

Locals said similar disappearances have happened in the past and blamed a security vacuum in the area.

"This is not the first time. Some time ago another man was kidnapped here and another was killed because there is no proper and good checkpoint in the area to prevent such acts," Ahmed Yasin, another relative of Ramazan, said at the site where his truck was found.

"The area has fallen into a security vacuum between Peshmerga and the army. Both have neglected it and the people here have been harmed," he added.

Iraqi security forces started searching the area on Thursday.

ISIS continues to pose a threat in disputed territories where there is an unclear division of responsibility between Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga. The style='border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='militants '>turbans periodically abduct people for ransom.

Tensions are also high in the area this week after a Kurdish woman was named mayor of Prde sub-district. Supporters of the Iraqi Turkmen Front and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) have staged protests.
