After weeks of public disagreements with Washington over the Rafah planning, Israel on May 6 ordered Paleostinian civilians to evacuate parts of the city and began troop and tank incursions.

"We are committed to broadening the ground operation in Rafah to the end of dismantling Hamas and recovering the hostages," a statement from Gallant's office quoted him as telling visiting US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

With most civilians moved at lightning speed, Is the US still opposed to a Rafah op?
2024-05-21
[Jpost] For several months now, there has been a heated debate between the US and Israel about whether it would take four weeks (Israel’s view) or four months (the US’s view) to evacuate the Palestinian civilians taking refuge in Rafah so that the IDF could operate there — an estimated 1.2 to 1.4 million people.

Another heated debate was regarding whether that sheer volume of civilians in such a tiny area could be moved without a mass loss of civilian life; Israel wagered "yes," and the US said "no."

The IDF resolved this debate on Monday in its announcement that it had moved somewhere between two-thirds to 80% of the Palestinian civilian population out of Rafah — with a minimal number of casualties — in under two weeks. This was the first shocking swing of fate, due largely to extraordinary IDF achievements.

IDF discovers weapons in UNRWA facility, kills Hamas terrorists
2024-05-20
[JPost] The IAF stuck approximately 80 terror targets over the past day throughout the Gaza Strip, including weapons storage facilities, rocket launchers, terrorist cells, and other terror targets.

IDF troops have located additional weaponry in an UNRWA facility in Jabalya, the Israeli military announced Monday afternoon.

Additionally, an Israel Air Force aircraft struck and eliminated the terrorist Zaher Huli (also known as "Abu Hamed"), who held roles in Hamas's military wing and the Hamas Police in central Gaza, the IDF and the Shin Bet announced.

Zaher reportedly used his position to build connections with other Hamas terrorists and promote terror attacks on Israel.

During an additional operation on Sunday, the terrorist Rami Khalil Faki, who held roles in Hamas' military wing and Hamas Police in the area of Nuseirat, was also targeted in an aerial strike.

Rami Khalil Faki commanded armed terrorists who carried out attacks against IDF troops. His deputy and four additional Hamas terrorist operatives were eliminated together with him.
Islamic Jihad commander eliminated

A Palestinian Islamic Jihad tactical-level commander was also eliminated in an aerial strike in the eastern Rafah area with three other terrorists from the organization who engaged in close combat with IDF soldiers, the IDF later announced.

In Rafah, the Maglan Unit drone team located tunnel shafts and terrorists in the area. During an operation, a terrorist exiting an underground tunnel shaft was targeted and killed by an IAF aircraft, the military added.

17 American doctors who had been stuck since Israel took over the Paleostinian side of the Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt earlier this month, according to official American sources.

US diplomats arranged for the doctors to leave instead through the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Israel.

"Some of the US citizen doctors who had been stuck in Gaza have now safely departed and made their way to safety with assistance from the US embassy in Jerusalem," a State Department spokesperson said.

"We have been in close contact with the groups that these US doctors are part of, and we have been in contact with the families of these US citizens," he said.

At least 14 doctors from a delegation made up of 35 US and other international volunteer physicians, including three Americans, chose to stay despite the uncertainty on when they will again have a chance to leave, according to the Paleostinian American Medical Association. The US-based non-profit medical group FAJR Scientific, which organized a second volunteer team, could not immediately be reached.

The Rafah crossing into Egypt has been the main gateway for goods and people entering Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put the onus on Egypt to reopen the crossing.

Egypt has accused Israel in turn of denying responsibility for a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and says that truck drivers and aid workers do not feel safe crossing through an Israeli checkpoint.

The doctors came to help one of the Strip’s few hospitals still functioning. They brought suitcases full of medical supplies and had trained for one of the worst war zones in the world. They knew the health care system was decimated and overwhelmed, with local doctors and nurses beyond exhausted after seven months of treating never-ending waves of Paleostinians maimed since war erupted in Gaza after Hamas
..the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,...
’s October 7 massacre.

"I did not expect that (it) will be that bad," said Dr. Ammar Ghanem, an ICU specialist from bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
with the Syrian American Medical Society. "You hear the news, but you cannot really recognize ... how bad until you come and see it."

The teams were trapped beyond the scheduled end of their two-week mission when Israel began what it has called a "pinpoint operation" into the crowded southern Gaza city of Rafah on May 6.

Those who left included Ghanem, who said the 15-mile trip from the hospital to the Kerem Shalom Crossing took more than four hours as explosions went off around them. He described some tense moments, such as when an Israel Defense Forces tank at the crossing apparently took aim at the doctors’ convoy.

"The tank moved and blocked our way and they directed their weapons (at) us. So that was a scary moment," Ghanem said.
You’re in what the experts call a “war zone”, buddy. What on earth did you expect?
The 14 doctors with the Paleostinian American Medical Association who stayed behind include American Adam Hamawy. US Sen. Tammy Duckworth credits Hamawy with saving her life when, as a military helicopter pilot in Iraq in 2004, she was hit by an RPG, causing injuries that cost her her legs.

The two international teams have been working since early May at the European General Hospital, just outside Rafah, the largest hospital still operating in southern Gaza. The volunteers are mostly American surgeons but include medical professionals from Britannia, Australia, Egypt, Jordan, Oman and other nations.

The World Health Organization said the UN, which coordinates visits of volunteer teams, is in talks with Israel to resume moving humanitarian workers in and out of Gaza. The IDF said it had no comment.
Now an answer for those who wondered how many hospitals Gaza has:
Nearly two dozen hospitals in Gaza are no longer operating, and the remaining dozen are only partially working.

Much of the European Hospital’s Paleostinian staff left to help families fleeing Rafah amid new evacuation orders to find new shelter. As a result, the foreign volunteers are stretched between medical emergencies and other duties, such as trying to find patients inside the hospital. There is no staff to log where incoming maimed are placed. Medicines that the teams brought with them are running out.

Thousands of Paleostinians are sheltering in the hospital. Outside, sewage overflows in the streets, and drinking water is brackish or polluted, spreading disease. The road to the hospital from Rafah is now unsafe: The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
says an Israeli tank fired on a marked UN vehicle on the road Monday, killing a UN security officer and wounding another.
That other: was he a gunny for Hamas or for Palestinian Islamic Jihad?
When the Rafah assault began, FAJR Scientific’s 17 doctors were living in a guesthouse in the city. With no warning from the IDF to evacuate, the team was stunned by bombs landing a few hundred meters from the clearly-marked house, said Mosab Nasser, FAJR’s CEO.

They scrambled out, still wearing their scrubs, and moved to the European Hospital, where the other team was staying.

Dr. Mohammed Tahir, an orthopedic surgeon from London with FAJR, does multiple surgeries a day on little sleep. He’s often jolted awake by bombings shaking the hospital. Work is frantic. He recalled opening one man’s chest to stop bleeding, with no time to get him to the operating room. The man died.

Tahir said when the Rafah assault began, Paleostinian colleagues at the hospital nervously asked if the volunteers would leave.

"It makes my heart feel really heavy," Tahir said. The Paleostinian staff knows that when the teams leave "they have no more protection; and that could mean that this hospital turns into Shifa, which is a very real possibility." IDF troops raided Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, the territory’s largest, for a second time in March, killing and detaining hundreds of terror suspects. Israel says that Hamas uses hospitals as command centers and hideouts, an accusation denied by Gaza health officials. The Gaza health ministry is run by Hamas.
”Pshaw! Pish and tosh! Fiddlesticks! Where do you people get such silly ideas?”
The patients Tahir has saved keep him going. Tahir and other surgeons operated for hours on a man with severe wounds to the skull and abdomen and shrapnel in his back. They did a second surgery on him Wednesday night.

"I looked at my colleagues and said, ’You know what? If this patient survives — just this patient — everything we’ve done, or everything we’ve experienced, would all be worth it,'" Tahir said.

Dr. Ahlia Kattan, an anesthesiologist and ICU doctor from Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, with FAJR, said the hardest case for her was a four-year-old boy, the same age as her son, who arrived with burns on more than 75 percent of his body, his lungs and spleen shattered. He didn’t survive.
Human shields so often don’t — it’s the strangest thing.
"He reminded me so much of my son," she said, holding back tears.

"Everyone has different stories here that they’re taking home with them."

Weighing heavily on all the volunteers, Kattan said, is "the guilt that we’re already feeling when we leave, that we get to escape to safety."

Gantz sets June 8 deadline for PM to make postwar plan, or he’ll bolt coalition
2024-05-19
Blowhard politicking instead of focussing on the war that is his duty.
[IsraelTimes] Minister lists 6 key goals including alternative to Hamas rule in Gaza, return of hostages, Saudi normalization; Netanyahu’s office: He should issue ultimatums to Hamas, not the PM.

War cabinet minister Benny Gantz issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night, demanding the premier commit to an agreed-upon vision for the Gaza conflict that would include stipulating who might rule the territory after Hamas’s defeat, and warning that he would bolt the coalition should this not happen.

In a statement that provoked swift outrage from other members of the government, Gantz said he believed that the war triggered by the Hamas-led October 7 massacre had been drifting off course in recent months due to the cowardice of some of Israel’s leaders.

To this end, Gantz warned that if no clear plan of action has been set in motion by June 8, he will pull his centrist party from government and return to the opposition.

The war cabinet must “formulate and approve a plan of action,” Gantz said, in order to achieve “six strategic goals”:

  • “Bring the hostages home.”

  • “Topple Hamas rule, demilitarize the Gaza Strip and gain Israeli security control [over Gaza].”

  • Alongside that Israeli security control, “create an international civilian governance mechanism for Gaza, including American, European, Arab and Palestinian elements — which will also serve as a basis for a future alternative that is not Hamas and is not [Palestinian Authority President] Abbas.”

  • “Return residents of the north [who were evacuated due to Hezbollah attacks] to their homes by September 1, and rehabilitate the western Negev [adjacent to Gaza, targeted by Hamas on October 7].”

  • “Advance normalization with Saudi Arabia as part of a comprehensive process to create an alliance with the free world and the West against Iran and its allies.”

  • “Adopt a framework for [military/national] service under which all Israelis will serve the state and contribute to the national effort.”

Gantz’s statement came days after Defense Minister Yoav Gallant appealed for Netanyahu to set out a postwar plan for the Gaza Strip, as the lack of planning was eroding the gains of the war, putting Israel’s long-term security at stake.

Gantz barely finished speaking before condemnation began pouring in from right-wing coalition lawmakers, some of whom have already called for him to be out of the government.

SCATHING RESPONSE FROM NETANYAHU
In a scathing statement released via his office, Netanyahu accused his coalition partner of “issuing an ultimatum to the prime minister instead of issuing an ultimatum to Hamas.”

Gantz’s demands would mean “an end to the war and defeat for Israel, abandoning the majority of the hostages, leaving Hamas in power, and creating a Palestinian state,” the statement claimed.

If Gantz truly prioritizes the national interest and not the toppling of the government, the Prime Minister’s Office argued, he must answer three questions:

  • Does Gantz want to see the operation in Rafah through to its end, and if so, why is he threatening to topple the unity government during the IDF operation?

  • Does he oppose Palestinian Authority rule in Gaza, even if Mahmoud Abbas is not involved?

  • Would he support a Palestinian state as part of a normalization process with Saudi Arabia?

“Prime Minister Netanyahu is determined to eliminate the Hamas battalions,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated. “He opposes bringing the Palestinian Authority into Gaza, and establishing a Palestinian state that will inevitably be a terror state.”

Netanyahu, continued the statement, believes that the unity government is key to achieving the war aims, “and expects Gantz to make clear to the public his positions on these issues.”

operative, who the IDF says was head of logistics for the terror group in the city in southern Gaza. "As part of his role, he was responsible for preparing the enemy for the IDF maneuver in Rafah," the military says.

In eastern Rafah, the military says troops of the Givati Brigade spotted and killed an RPG-wielding operative in a building near them. Givati troops raided several sites in the area, locating weapons, the IDF adds.

Also in eastern Rafah, the Egoz commando unit located a rocket launcher at a building used by terror groups, the IDF says.

Meanwhile in Jabaliya in the Strip’s north, the IDF says the Paratroopers Brigade killed several button men during several engagements; the 7th Armored Brigade located a primed rocket launcher and killed several more button men in battles; and the 460th Armored Brigade located several tunnel shafts and killed an RPG-wielding operative.

In the Strip’s center, the 99th Division continued to battle button men in the Netzarim Corridor area, including by calling in airstrikes, the IDF says.

In one incident in central Gaza, troops of the 414th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit spotted a cell that had fired RPGs at troops and directed a drone to strike and kill the operatives, the army adds.

Israel has conducted renewed military sweeps this month of parts of northern Gaza where it had declared the end of major operations in January. At the time, it also predicted its forces would return to prevent a regrouping by the Paleostinian Islamist group that rules Gaza.

One site has been Jabalia, the largest of Gaza Strip's eight historic refugee camps. On Saturday, troops and tanks edged into streets so far spared the ground offensive, residents said. In one strike, medics said 15 Paleostinians were killed and dozens maimed.

IDF calls on Palestinians in coastal neighborhoods in north Gaza to evacuate

[IsraelTimes] The Israeli military is calling on Palestinians in additional neighborhoods of northern Gaza to evacuate the area, as it presses on with its operation against Hamas in Jabaliya.

Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, publishes a list of the new zones that need to be evacuated alongside the announcement.

Last weekend, the IDF issued an evacuation warning for Jabaliya, before it pushed into the area. It has since twice expanded the evacuation zone, and the latest announcement includes the al-Atatra and al-Karama areas on the coast.

Palestinian civilians are told to move to shelters west of Gaza City.

The IDF operation against Hamas in Jabaliya was launched after it identified terror operatives regrouping there.

IDF says 2 soldiers killed, 4 seriously wounded during fighting in southern Gaza

[IsrelTimes] The IDF announces the deaths of two soldiers killed during fighting in the southern Gazoo Strip on Saturday.

The slain troops are named as Staff Sgt. Nachman Meir Haim Vaknin, 20, from Eilat and Staff Sgt. Noam Bittan, 20, from Yad Rambam.

The pair served in the Givati Brigade’s reconnaissance unit.

Vaknin and Bittan were killed and another two soldiers and an officer of the Givati reconnaissance unit were seriously maimed as a result of a blast in a booby-trapped tunnel shaft in the Rafah area.

Their deaths bring the toll of slain troops in the IDF’s ground offensive against Hamas

[Hot Air] Juuuussssttttt spitballin' here, but it certainly seems like we have an answer for Egypt's extraordinary pissiniss about Israel's plans to clear out Rafah.

I have to admit, this was the favored line of thinking over the past few weeks as the Biden administration sabotaged every Israeli move, and the Egyptians blustered and threatened. Almost to a one, folks weren't at all fooled. They were asking, "What is Egypt worried the Israelis are going to find?"

White House says there will be a 'small US military component' protecting the new $320 million pier...
2024-05-18
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A 'small' contingent of U.S. military personnel will provide security for a new $320 million floating pier bringing food aid to hungry residents of Gaza amid Israel's war on Hamas, the White House said.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters the U.S. military members would be there to provide security and assist in the complex orchestration of moving relief by sea and then distributing it to desperate residents by truck.

He said there would be a 'small U.S. military component on the pier itself.'

'One is to provide a modicum of security for it. But also to assist with the logistics. You're going to have ships pulling up to this pier. Not the big cargo ships. They'll transport it to smaller ships off the coast of Gaza ... You're going to need some logistical support to get it from the ships onto the trucks,' he said.

His comments to reporters come just two days after U.S. Central Command announced it had successfully anchored the pier to the beach in Gaza.

It stressed that no U.S. troops entered Gaza proper.

'As part of this effort, no U.S. troops entered Gaza. Trucks carrying humanitarian assistance are expected to begin moving ashore in the coming days. The United Nations will receive the aid and coordinate its distribution into Gaza,' according to the statement.

Kirby was emphatic that 'there are no U.S. servicemembers in Gaza.' President Biden, while providing billions in U.S. congressionally-appropriated military support to Gaza and using naval assets to protect navigation while helping foil attacks on Israel, has not involved U.S. forces in Israel's operation in Gaza.

Kirby's comments about U.S. forces came as he said there was a 'robust security plan' for the effort, and that the administration was 'laser focused on ensuring the safety of everybody involved in this effort,' amid concerns it could be vulnerable to attack.
