48-hr gun battle ends at Pampore, 3 militants killed
2016-02-23
[Daily Excelsior] In one of the longest gun battles in recent years, Army this evening killed three militants in the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) building in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district after 48-hour long intense gun fight.

After night long lull, the residents woke up early this morning to the deafening explosions and rattle of gun fire that continued till 4 p.m. After 48 hours, machine guns fell silent and deafening explosions stopped this evening marking the killing of 3 militants, believed to be of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) who entered the EDI building on Saturday.

Sources said that it was a group of LeT militants who carried out the attack and identified them as Abu Saad, Abu Ukasha and Abu Walid. He said that the group had come to South Kashmir last month from North Kashmir’s Handwara forests to carry out Fidayeen attack. He said that one of the killed militants carried the arms and ammunition inside the EDI building just before the attack on the CRPF convoy on Saturday evening.

There are no good Taliban
2014-06-22
The audacious terror strike on June 8, 2014 at Pakistan's Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, which killed 36 people — including 10 terrorists of the now Mullah Fazlullah-led Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who staged the assault — was perhaps the tipping point that propelled the Nawaz Sharif government to shed its reluctance to mount an all-out counter-offensive against one of Pakistan's major terror conglomerates. That Prime Minister Sharif conscientiously strove for peace talks with Pakistan's main terror "tanzeem", the TTP — considering that his political formation, the PML-N, allegedly had durable links, since years, with some Pakistani extremists — was understandable. That a majority of these fundamentalist elements, especially in Punjab, electorally assisted the PML-N in the last general elections is hardly a political secret.

On the other hand, the Pakistani army and its notorious handmaiden, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) — themselves formidable practitioners of the art of exporting terror to neighbouring India and Afghanistan — were persistently demanding strong action, exclusively against the TTP, for it had been striking at will against army assets all across Pakistan, including the daring and devastating attack on the strategic naval air base at Mehran, Karachi in May 2011. Meanwhile, the Pakistan army and the ISI, for decades, have conveniently disregarded other equally lethal extremists in anti-India terror groups, such as the Hafiz Saeed-led Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, as also the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani Network and al-Qaeda elements, which it considers its "strategic assets".

Till last year, the Pakistani army had mounted only half-hearted attacks in the restive Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), including the rugged Waziristan regions that have been a haven for terrorists of all hues — both indigenous Pakistanis and foreign militants operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan on both sides of the Durand Line. Most casualties inflicted on terrorists in the North and South Waziristan sanctuaries can be attributed to the US drone strikes since 2008, which have caused many deaths among both extremists and civilians. However, this year, under pressure from the Pakistan government, the US has resorted to only the odd strike. That Washington, with its planned draw-down in Afghanistan, has pressured the Pakistani military machine to up the ante against terror groups holed up in the Waziristan belt would be stating the obvious. Presumably, with Pakistan's economy in the doldrums, coupled with an alarmingly deteriorating internal security situation and generous financial doles promised by the US, the army would have agreed to bite the bullet at long last and resolutely go after the TTP and, ostensibly, the other terror groups too.

In February this year, Pakistan formally unveiled its National Security Document that laid out, in some detail, Pakistan's anti-terror policy. Despite a few off and on peace talks and ceasefires between the unyielding TTP and the Pakistani establishment, PM Sharif finally gave the green signal for the Pakistani armed forces to mount an all-out offensive against all terrorists in the North Waziristan belt. Thus Operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched with all ferocity on June 15, employing nearly 30,000 troops. The operation is significantly named after one of the Prophet's swords, "Azb", which he had used in the battles of Badr and

With Pakistani F-16 fighter jets pounding militant hideouts in North Waziristan, tanks also rolled through the streets of Miramshah, North Waziristan's main town. Thousands of civilians of this town and the neighbouring villages have fled to safer areas to avoid the impending ground offensive. The army has also liberally employed lethal multi-barrel rocket launchers, heavy artillery and attack helicopters, unmindful of the collateral damage that could occur. Media reports point to over 200 militants having been killed in the first 36 hours of the offensive, including Uzbek terror kingpin Abu al-Manni, who reportedly had masterminded the Karachi airport attack.

Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, vowed to destroy terrorist sanctuaries "without any discrimination" — a reference to the selective anti-terror operations the Pakistan army has been accused of. Meanwhile, TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid immediately retaliated, saying that, "By God, we will soon shake your palaces in Islamabad and Lahore and burn those to ashes." The Pakistani establishment, expecting violent retributive acts by the Taliban, has deployed large numbers of security personnel to guard sensitive assets across the country.

The otherwise delayed anti-terror offensive has closed ranks, perhaps for the first time in many years, among Pakistan's major political parties and civil society. Even Imran Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the hitherto recalcitrant opponent of offensives against the TTP, has welcomed the government's decision as have other major parties, including the PPP and MQM. If Pakistan can truly discard terrorism as an extension of state policy — against both India and Afghanistan — and not be selective in combating terror groups, India will wish it all success in ridding itself of the scourge decimating its vitals. Pakistan today stands at the crossroads of its destiny. Only its sincerity of intent in endeavouring to eliminate terror in all its manifestations can help it.

Chechen connections to Al Qaeda, Pakistan ISI, KSA, and others
2013-04-22
Last paragraph #29 of lengthy 2010 article. Do not miss para #28:
29.Western skepticism about the Russian evidence regarding the links of the Chechen terrorists with Al Qaeda has been coming in the way of strong action against the Chechen terrorists operating from Pakistani sanctuaries with Saudi money. This skepticism can be compared to the US skepticism over Indian evidence regarding the international dimensions of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET) and its links with Al Qaeda. Only after the LET killed six US nationals in Mumbai during its sea-borne terrorist strikes in the last week of November,2008, did the Americans start admitting that the LET had become as dangerous as Al Qaeda. The Chechen terrorists have till now not targeted US nationals and interests. Hence, the US skepticism continues. This is a short-sighted approach and will weaken the war against global jihadi terrorism. The LET did not target Americans till November, 2008. That did not make it any the less dangerous as a terrorist organization. The Chechen terrorists are as ruthless and dangerous as the LET or any other associate of Al Qaeda. The world has to be concerned over their activities before it becomes too late. ( 31-3-10)

Indian Police Report Pakistan Link to Kashmir Attack
2013-03-20
[An Nahar] Police in Indian-administered Kashmir Tuesday said they had arrested four people including a Pakistani national from the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group over an attack that left five policemen dead.

Abdul Gani Mir, Kashmir's top law enforcement officer, said investigators had concluded that the attack was planned by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based group blamed for mass killings in Mumbai in 2008.

"The arrested include Zubair alias Talha Zarar of Lashkar-e-Toiba who came from Multan (in Pakistan)," inspector general of police Mir told reporters.

Two heavily armed militants attacked a group of Central Reserve Police Force personnel in the compound of a police-run school last week, killing five of them and injuring 10 others including four civilians.

In a call to local media after the assault, the deadliest attack on security forces in nearly five years, the Indian Kashmir-based but pro-Pakistan militant group Hizbul Mujahideen claimed responsibility.

Mir said the militants had infiltrated from the Pakistani side of the heavily militarized informal border of Kashmir in January and February to "cause disturbance" in Srinagar.

Three others arrested include Pradeep Singh and two "former militants", one of whom, Bashir Ahmad Mir, was released from prison in 2008.

"They provided logistical support for the attack," Mir said at a press conference.

Home Front: WoT
US court to sentence David Headley today
2013-01-24
Chicago: A court here on Thursday will announce the quantum of punishment for Pakistani-American David Headley, a key plotter in the deadly 2008 Mumbai terror attacks staged by Pakistan based terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

US federal prosecutors have sought 30 to 35 years in prison for Headley, who has pleaded guilty to his role in the 26/11 attacks that killed 160 people.

Headley, 52, son of a Pakistani father and an American mother, had changed his given name of Dawood Gilani to scout targets in Mumbai without arousing suspicion.

Ahead of Headley's sentencing, Gary Shapiro, the acting US Attorney in Chicago, in a memo to the federal district court on Tuesday said that the 30-35 year sentence recommended by the prosecution for Headley was fair.

"While his criminal conduct was deplorable, the uniquely significant cooperation which he provided to the government's efforts to combat terrorism supports the government's recommendations," he said.

Headley could receive up to life in prison.

Prosecutors had agreed not to seek the death penalty for Headley in exchange for his plea after he promised in 2010 to cooperate with US authorities.

US Attorney General Eric Holder noted at the time that he had provided extensive "valuable intelligence about terrorist activities".

Headley was the star witness against his Pakistan-born boyhood friend Tahawwur Rana, who was sentenced last week to 14 years in prison for aiding an abortive LeT plot to attack Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten for publishing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad.

Kashmiri shepherd boy snatches Ak-47 from LeT terrorists
2011-08-01
JAMMU, July 30: Displaying extraordinary courage, a Bakerwal youth not only dodged two foreign mercenaries, reportedly belonging to Pakistan's Punjab province and affiliated to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit but also managed to snatch AK-47 rifle of one of them before reaching a safe location from where he was rescued by a police party in Banihal area of Ramban district.
This is why the bible emphasizes that King David was a shepherd as a boy. The best among them demonstrate responsibility and care for their charges, quick wit and ingenuity, and the martial spirit necessary to overcome murderous foes.
A mobile telephone in possession of the youth, which had earlier been snatched by the militants from his possession but later restored presuming that he had joined their ranks, helped the Bakerwal boy to reach the police custody along with a weapon. The youth is being recommended for the bravery award and his recruitment in police is a possibility, official sources said.

Declining to disclose identity of the youth due to security reasons, police sources said the 22 year old boy, originally a resident of Vijaypur, Reasi, had shifted to Tanji Narh in Banihal area of Ramban along with his family and other Bakerwals in the summer.

While he was grazing cattle in the forests, two foreign militants, who were reportedly new in the area, kidnapped him on the evening of July 20 and asked him to show them safe routes leading to Pir Panjal range. The family lodged a missing report of the youth with Banihal police station on July 24.
I hope the cattle were rescued later, as well.
The youth told police after escaping custody of the militants early this morning that both of them were speaking Punjabi. They were believed to be Pakistani militants of Punjab province affiliated to the LeT outfit. Both of them were equipped with arms, ammunition and explosive devices.

Sources said the militants tried to motivate the kidnapped youth to join their ranks. They also snatched his mobile telephone and removed its battery to ensure that their presence was not tracked by security agencies using signal of the cell phone. Finding him helpless, the youth started posing himself as an associate of the militants. Presuming that the youth had joined militancy, the foreign terrorists restored his telephone and started trusting him.

The militants trekked several forests and finally established their base in Zamandu forest area, which was surrounding by a small habitation few kilometers away and had water facilities.

In the meantime, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Banihal Abdul Qayoom and SHO Banihal Sajjad Mir under the supervision of DIG Doda-Ramban range Manish Kumar Sinha and SP Ramban Anil Magotra established contact with the youth through his mobile telephone during which he started narrating few details about the militants after getting a chance.

Last evening when one of the militants had gone to collect food in a surrounding habitation and another was taking rest after consuming some drugs, the Bakerwal youth displayed tremendous courage as he removed the weapon (an AK-47 rifle) from under the head of the militant and escaped from the spot.

He trekked several kilometers before reaching Zabban forests where a Banihal police party was already waiting for him. The youth was rescued. As he had dumped the weapon in a forest while fleeing custody of the militants, the Army and police parties reached the spot along with the boy and recovered the weapon.

He was safely brought to Banihal police station.

Sources said the youth disclosed during questioning that the militants were confirmed Pakistanis as they didn't recognize any route and wanted to reach a particular area in Pir Panjal range. He added that one of the militants, who was a commander, was drug addict but was constantly in touch with some militants through his satellite telephone. Both the militants were in possession of one AK rifle and one wireless set each besides a number of magazines, explosive devices, dry fruits, a satellite telephone, drugs and some documents.

Immediately after the escape of the Bakerwal boy, Army and police teams launched massive searches in Zamandu forest area but by then the militants had escaped from the spot well aware of the fact that the escaped boy would have sounded security forces about their whereabouts.

However, security forces and police continued searches in the forests to track down the militants.

Sources said the ultras were believed to be fresh entrants to Banihal, which was evident from the fact that they were not aware of the routes. The route taken by them to reach Banihal was being ascertained by the security agencies, they added.

Meanwhile, security forces and police have appreciated the courage displayed by the boy in dodging the militants and fleeing from their custody along with the weapon. A handsome reward is being sanctioned in his favour and a possibility of his recruitment into police would also be explored, sources said.

Terror date 13 points to role of Indian Mujahideen and Lashkar
2011-07-15
NEW DELHI: Despite lack of a prior warning or heightened threat assessment of a terror attack, the date of the latest Mumbai attack has focused the attention of security agencies on the hand of the jihadi group Indian Mujahideen (IM), given the Lashkar-linked outfit's penchant for striking on the 13th and 26th days of a month. The IM, acting in consort and at the behest of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), is the likely suspect with its network of sleeper cells and sympathizers. Once again, as has been the case often in the past, a terrorist attack has happened on 13th.

Sustained questioning of arrested IM members, including those who willingly collaborated after being held, has failed to resolve the enigma of the dates even though they add up to compelling evidence.

Consider these events:

* May 13, 2008: Terror hit Jaipur with six serial blasts rocking crowded areas, killing nearly 50.

*July 26, 2008: Ahmedabad hit by a series of 21 blasts that killed 57.

*September 13, 2008: A series of six synchronized blasts in Delhi killed around 30.

*November 26, 2008: 10 LeT terrorists killed almost 187 in the worst ever attack on Mumbai over three days.

*February 13, 2010: A terrorist attack at the German Bakery in Pune left 17 dead.

The dates cannot be a coincidence, and are a strong indicator that IM, whose leaders continue to plan and train in Pakistan, might be the hand behind the mayhem.

Indian agencies have been aware of the importance of these dates, although nobody has yet been able to crack the reason why 13 and 26 are the chosen days. In their investigations over the years, agencies have questioned many IM operatives who have been arrested.

The planning and execution of the blasts also bears the signature of the LeT backed group even though no email claiming responsibility has been reported as yet. The blasts were high intensity and the crowded locale of a neighbourhood like Zaveri Bazaar points to the IM.

Aware of the dates, agencies have stepped up vigilance and paid greater attention to terrorist chatter intercepts around these two days. Despite that, sources said, there was no inkling of any impending terror attack.

This year, there is an added ironic twist to these dates: Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers are expected to sit down for important talks on July 26. There was also buzz on the internet -- subsequently found to be incorrect -- that Ajmal Kasab's, birthday is on July 13.

Intelligence agencies say IM is part of LeT's so-called "Karachi Project", which uses fugitive Indian jihadis and run by former Pakistan armymen to keep up the terror pressure on India. This not only keeps India off balance, it also increases the deniability factor for Pakistan because IM operatives by and large are in India. The project, revealed by David Headley to the FBI interrogators, has also been linked to Huji in the past. Headley, for instance, was in close touch with Ilyas Kashmiri of Huji. Headley also said IM leaders, Riaz and Iqbal Bhatkal, were living under the protection of the LeT in Karachi.

Thackeray warns Rahul of Hindu backlash
2010-12-21
[Arab News] Shiv Sena
A Hindoo nationalist political movement that presents a resistance using the same nasty tactics to aggressive Islamists and that's a pain in the underwear to other Indian political parties...
chief Bal Thackeray launched a severe attack against Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for his alleged comments that Hindu cut-throats were more dangerous than the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

In an editorial in his mouthpiece Saamna, published on Sunday, Thackeray warned that Rahul would have to pay dearly for his alleged comments stating that the Hindu majority in the country would retaliate very strongly.

"The Italian connection of Rahul is well known and his maternal grandfather was an admirer and close friend of Mussolini. Rahul's family, right from his parental great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, worshipped those who divided the country," Thackeray said when asked about Rahul's credentials.

In a turn around from his earlier anti-China stand, Thackeray lavished praised on the Chinese and stated that India should befriend China which could turn out to be a better friend than the United States, which he alleged was not keen to curb terrorism outside it border.

"Make no mistake that China is our next door neighbor and also a powerful country that is capable of challenging the US. Agreed that our experience with China is not good since the 1962 war, but it is a fact that we lack the courage to wage a war against China and recover the land under its possession, but we can regain the land by maintaining good relations with China," Thackeray wrote in the editorial.

Emulating his uncle Bal Thackeray, the estranged nephew and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray too launched a tirade against Rahul. Speaking at a public function in Dombivili suburb of Mumbai on Sunday morning, Raj described the Congress leader as a "mentally unsound" person and asked whether Rahul had ever studied and known what terrorism is? Does he know what is LeT? "Rahul does not have the courage to speak before four people but he goes and makes the comments about Hindu terrorism before the US Ambassador. However,
The infamous However...
we do not know for sure whether Rahul had truly spoken or not about Hindu terrorism," he added while taking potshots at the media. He said, "Should we believe and trust what is published in the media? Also we wonder whether the media understand the news itself."

Pak groups issue fatwa calling for death for critic of blasphemy laws
2010-12-05
It began when a woman (Aasia Bibi) made an 'I'm proud to be a Christian' comment to a coworker. The coworker complained to a cleric and a court charged Aasia with blasphemy. The Pakistan minister for minority Religion (Shabhaz Bhatti) said the blasphemy laws should be revised.

Several Islamic terrorist orgs, e.g. Lashkar-e-Toiba (a big well organized one) and Majlis Ahrar e Islam (a smaller one) have issued a fatwa calling for the assasination of Bhatti. They have also said that if the Govt of Pakistan pardons Aasia they will have a similar fatwa issued against them. A number of imans connected with mainline mosques have issued statements supporting the blasphemy laws, warning Bhatti not to defend Aasia, etc. Essentially no Imans in Pakistan (or elsewhere to my knowledge) have defended Aasia or said that the blasphemy law should be made less ferocious.

The whole issue has been ignored by the NYTimes, the WaPo, etc.

Spain arrests seven with links to Mumbai attack
2010-12-01
Spanish police have arrested seven men suspected of having links to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT)

The six Pakistanis and a Nigerian man are suspected of sending forged documents and money to a group with ties to al-Qaeda. Three others - a Thai national and two Pakistanis - were held in Thailand as part of the same operation. The suspects allegedly were part of a group in Thailand linked to LeT.

Spain's Interior Ministry said that anti-terrorist officers detained the suspects in raids in and around Barcelona late on Tuesday and early on Wednesday. The arrests were part of an international operation, and that the head of the organisation - a Pakistani living in Thailand - had been detained.
Barcelona. Say, isn't that a long way from Pakistain?
The ministry said the man had "directed the cells based in Europe, decided the features of the passports to obtain and, once they were received in Bangkok, supplied them to different terrorist groups".

It added that the operation "neutralises an important cell providing passports to al-Qaeda".
