That came as Yemen has been locked in a war between the Houthi rebels, who hold the capital, Sanaa, and a Saudi-led coalition backing the country’s exiled government based in Aden.
“Since 2020, Saif al-Adel has been able to convince al-Batarfi of his strategic approach, focused on confronting Western states and their allies in Yemen — the Saudi-led coalition, the Aden-based government, the United Arab Emirates and its allies — rather than confronting the Iranian-backed Houthi movement,” a 2023 report by the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies said.
Al-Adel is believed to be in Iran, part of a longtime al-Qaeda presence in the Islamic Republic. That’s long been denied by Tehran but backed up by documents seized in the 2011 US raid in Pakistan that killed bin Laden, who orchestrated the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.

Al-Batarfi’s ties to al-Adel had strained relations in AQAP, experts say. However, it has seen the terrorists become armed with bomb-carrying drones — something the Houthis now use to target shipping in the Red Sea amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Yemen’s history and tribal structure long has seen alliances rapidly shift, something its late strongman President Ali Abdullah Saleh referred to as “dancing on the heads of snakes.”
Al-Batarfi, born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, traveled to Afghanistan in 1999 and fought alongside the Taliban during the US-led invasion. He joined AQAP in 2010 and led forces in taking over Yemen’s Abyan province, according to the US.
In 2015, he was freed after an AQAP raid that saw the terrorists capture Mukalla, the capital of Yemen’s largest province, Hadramawt, amid the chaos of the war. A photo at the time showed al-Awlaki with a Kalashnikov rifle, posing inside a government palace there.
AQAP was later pushed out of Mukalla but has continued attacks and been the target of a US drone strike campaign since the administration of then-president George W. Bush.
In 2020, there had been claims that al-Bartafi had been detained, which later were denied. In 2021, he appeared in a video by the terror group and referred to the January 6 riot at the US Capitol as “only the tip of the iceberg of what will come to them, God willing.”

Since conflict broke out in April 2023, according to Access Now, both SAF and RSF have shut down the internet to block information flows in areas controlled by the opposing sides. The latest shutdown in early February is reportedly exacerbating an already catastrophic humanitarian and human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... crisis that has seen more than 14,000 people killed and more than 9 million other displaced.
The continued weaponization of internet shutdowns by the warring parties in Sudan is a violation of international law, according to human rights organizations.
More than 20 people interviewed by Amnesia Amnesty International said they continue to face challenges communicating with their friends and family members since the beginning of the communication blackout in early February.
This has created anxiety among Sudanese communities outside the country who are unable to connect and communicate with their loved ones.

[AFRICANEWS] Parents of kidnapped children in Nigeria waited anxiously to hear off any news concerning the recovery of the children on Saturday.
Nearly 300 children were kidnapped from their school by cycle of violence-riding button men in the latest mass kidnapping, which analysts and activists blamed on the failure of intelligence and a slow security response.
The abduction of the 287 children in Kaduna state, near the West African nation's capital, is one of the largest school kidnappings in the decade since the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Borno state’s Chibok village in 2014 stunned the world.
Analysts and activists say the security lapses that allowed that mass abduction remain.
"They came in dozens, riding on (motor) bikes, shooting sporadically and randomly," said the school's assistant headteacher, Nura Ahmad.
The victims of the latest attack — among them at least 100 children aged 12 or under — were surrounded and marched into a forest just as they were starting the school day, said locals in Kuriga town, located 55 miles (89 kilometers) from the city of Kaduna.
One man was rubbed out as he tried to save the students, school authorities said.
One mother, Rashidat Hamza, had five of her six children among those kidnapped.
She hopes her children, aged between 7 and 18-years-old, can be brought back home swiftly.
"We don’t know what to do but we believe in God. We don’t have security, no soldiers, no police to protect the school," Hamza said.
"Since this happened, my brain has been scattered. I can’t even walk around because I am worried about the children and their condition," said Shehu Lawal, whose son was also kidnapped.
No group has grabbed credit for this mass abduction but locals blame it on the bandidos who carry out frequent mass killings and abductions for large ransoms in remote villages across Nigeria’s northwest and central regions.
Women, children and students are often targeted in the mass abductions in the conflict-hit northern region and many victims are released only after paying huge ransoms.

Issa was reportedly hiding in Nusirat, in central Gaza, at the time of the strike, and it is unclear whether the Hamas leader was killed in the event. Maariv, citing Palestinian sources, reported that Hamas was concerned about the status of the terror chief.
15 TERRORISTS KILLED IN CENTRAL GAZA
Separately, in central Gaza, the IDF eliminated 15 terrorists through close-quarters engagements, sniper fire, and airstrikes, the IDF stated on Monday.
In one encounter, Israeli troops identified a terror cell carrying what were suspected to be weapons out of a Hamas military compound in the area. After observing the subsequent activities of the cell, the terror cell was eliminated by a strike from an IDF aircraft, the military noted.
The IDF similarly eliminated another terror cell that was observing the Israeli troops in the area.
The Israeli forces also operated in the area of Hamad in southern Gaza, where special forces units conducted raids on a number of civilian residences that were being used for terror purposes, the IDF reported.
During these raids, the IDF troops arrested Hamas terrorists and found weapons, ammunition, and other military ordnance. In one operation, an anti-tank missile was launched at the soldiers, however not injuries among IDF personnel were reported as a consequence.

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday the death of a soldier killed battling Hamas ...the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,... in Gaza, as fighting showed no signs of waning amid deadlocked truce talks on the eve of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, while several countries continue efforts to send more aid to the besieged Strip amid widespread hunger.
Sgt. First Class (res.) Michael Gal, 29, of the Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion, from Jerusalem, was killed fighting in southern Gaza on Sunday, the IDF said, bringing the toll of slain troops in the ground offensive against Hamas to 249.
Gal was slated to be buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on Sunday evening, a few hours after the funeral at the same site of Maj. (res.) Amishar Ben David, 43, who was killed on Friday while fighting in the Strip.
Among those at Ben David’s funeral was his cousin, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
"You grew up and you sang the song of your life, a song of kindness and generosity," Ben David’s father, Haim, said at his funeral on Sunday, making a reference to his name, which is Hebrew for "my nation sings."
The military said Sunday morning that the Hamas operative who was responsible for killing Ben David was killed in an Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... . The IDF released footage of the strike, which it said was directed by troops of the Egoz commando unit.
The strike came as the IDF’s Commando Brigade continued to focus on the Hamad Town residential complex in Khan Younis, where troops have been fighting since March 3.
The IDF said Sunday morning that its troops were engaged in "intense fighting" against Hamas button men in the complex of modern apartment buildings. The IDF said the Maglan commando unit raided several apartments used by Hamas, and captured seized weapons. At one of the apartments, two Hamas operatives surrendered to the troops, the IDF said.
Later Sunday, the IDF said that an attack helicopter struck a Hamas site in the complex that was used by turbans who participated in the October 7 onslaught, killing four operatives.
The IDF said troops of the Givati Brigade also captured a cache of weapons at a Hamas hideout apartment in the area. The soldiers seized mortars, bombs, assault rifles and ammunition, the military said.
Givati troops are operating in the eastern part of Hamad, where the IDF said Hamas uses the high-rise towers for terror activity.
Also in Khan Younis, the IDF said the Bislamach Brigade killed 17 button men, and the 7th Armored Brigade killed several more operatives, including by calling in airstrikes.
Meanwhile, ...back at the desert island, Irene was indignant at the thought of doing such a thing without benefit of clergy... in central Gaza, the Nahal Brigade killed 13 button men over the past day, including with sniper fire and by calling in airstrikes and tank shelling, the IDF said.
Airstrikes were also carried out against a site from which rockets were fired at troops inside Gaza, as well as Hamas infrastructure in Jabaliya and Beit Hanoun in the northern part of the Strip, the IDF added.
TRUCE HOPES DISSIPATE AS RAMADAN BEGINS
As the fighting continued to rage, Israel’s war cabinet was meeting Sunday night to discuss how to deal with temporary truce talks that appear to be stuck, Channel 12 news reported, a day after the Mossad intelligence service said that efforts to secure a deal were ongoing, but accused Hamas of refusing to negotiate in good faith.
“At this stage, Hamas is fortifying its position as if it is not interested in a deal, and it strives to ignite the region during Ramadan at the expense of the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip,” the Mossad said in a rare message Saturday night.
Hamas has accused Israel of refusing to budge in its demands and not actually being interested in a deal.
Citing two Egyptian security sources, Reuters reported Sunday evening that Egypt has been in contact with senior Hamas and Israeli figures as well as other mediators in an effort to restart negotiations, which ended in Cairo last week without a breakthrough.
Mediators have been scrambling to get a deal for a truce and to release hostages in place by the start of Ramadan, which begins Monday morning. War cabinet minister Benny Gantz has threatened that Israel would expand fighting into the southern city of Rafah, where over a million displaced Gazans are sheltering, if no deal was reached by the Ramadan deadline.

While thousands of Moslem worshipers entered the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem to pray on the first night of the holy month of Ramadan Sunday, coppers scuffled with some attendees at the entrance to the flashpoint Temple Mount site, according to a video circulating on social media.
The footage showed Israeli Border Police officers assailing some with batons at the entrance to the compound. In response to the video, Israel Police said it was working to "enable freedom of worship on the Temple Mount while at the same time ensuring safety and security, in accordance with instructions given by the politicianship."
It was not entirely clear what those instructions are.
Police said there was "increased inspection was carried out in the area" to detect threats and "prevent potential criminals, instigators and violators of public order, all for the sake of public peace and security, and the proper observance of Ramadan prayers."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged last week that the number of worshipers allowed to pray on the Temple Mount in the first week of Ramadan would be the same as in previous years and that no restrictions would be imposed on Israeli Arabs, overruling a previous decision by ultranationalist firebrand ...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments... National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who oversees the Israel Police.
Most of the Arab population of Jerusalem, however, does not hold Israeli citizenship, and can therefore be subject to stricter limitations.
Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai was reportedly looking to limit attendance "in the initial stage" of Ramadan, adding that younger Arabs, whether Israeli or from East Jerusalem, are the main "agitators" and should therefore be barred.
Photos and videos filmed Sunday night and shared on X showed groups of young Moslem men who were refused access to the al-Aqsa compound praying in the alleys leading to it, and outside the walls of the Old City.
Ha’aretz reported that hundreds of young Paleostinians were prevented from accessing the site on Sunday night but that some managed to enter the compound with their parents or when police loosened the barriers due to pressure created by gatherings at the entrances.
According to the report, thousands of Moslem worshipers prayed at the site Sunday, with their numbers expected to swell over the coming days to reach tens of thousands on Friday.

Israeli authorities were set to charge over a dozen Arab citizens accused of planning to carry out attacks on behalf of the Paleostinian terror group Hamas ...the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,... , the Israel Police and Shin Bet security service said in a joint statement Sunday.
The 13 suspects, mostly from the northern city Sakhnin, are suspected of purchasing weapons from operatives in the West Bank, according to the statement.
Authorities said the plot had been unraveled during a months-long covert investigation.

Indictments against the suspects, some of whom were involved in rioting during the May 2021 Gaza war, were to be filed at Haifa District Court on Sunday.
Two men, Muhammad Khaled and Muhammad Yusef, were accused by police of leading the cell and recruiting the other members.
One of the suspects, Muhammad Khalaila, maintained contact with Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip who provided him with instructions on how to manufacture explosives and told him to recruit additional members, the statement said.
Authorities said four firearms, ammunition, and other equipment were seized in raids on the cell. Some of the weapons originated from the Israel Defense Forces, the statement said.

Additionally, Suheib Jalbush, a West Bank Paleostinian accused of weapons dealing was also arrested for his involvement in the plot.
Authorities did not say where or when the arrests took place.

Police said separately that 20 East Jerusalem residents had been arrested on suspicion of incitement and support for terrorism over the past two weeks.
Some indictments have been made and the investigation is ongoing, they noted, accusing terror groups of attempting to stir up unrest in the capital around Ramadan by spreading "false information regarding the reality in Jerusalem, the Old City, and in particular the Temple Mount."

Israeli security officials fear that Moslem anger over the Gaza war could rise to a crescendo during Ramadan, fueling unrest, especially if Israeli authorities attempt to limit access to the Haram al-Sharif holy site in Jerusalem, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

War cabinet minister Benny Gantz issued a direct appeal on Sunday evening to Moslem citizens of Israel, declaring that its war in Gaza is "not against Islam."
"These days, the State of Israel is in a difficult campaign that began with a murderous attack by Hamas holy warriors on all Israeli citizens, including Moslems," Gantz said in a pre-recorded message. "Our war is not against Islam — but against those who harmed the values of Islam. Against those who committed crimes against humanity, and also sought to tear apart Israeli society and our common future."
Declaring that Hamas wants to see Ramadan turn from a month of prayer to "a month of blood," Gantz asserted that the Gaza-based terror group "doesn’t represent the absolute majority of Israel’s Arab citizens."
The minister said that October 7 proved that "Arab society is an integral part of the State of Israel. When we are in danger, we are all in the same danger and face it together."
He added a pledge to maintain freedom of worship on the Temple Mount and called on Israeli Moslems to ignore "the forces of Evil who try to incite and harm us."
Police said earlier Sunday that terror groups were attempting to stir up unrest in the capital around Ramadan by spreading "false information regarding the reality in Jerusalem, the Old City and in particular the Temple Mount."

"This is our mosque and we must take care of it," said Azzam al-Khatib, director-general of the Jerusalem Waqf, the religious foundation that oversees al-Aqsa. "We must protect the presence of Moslems at this mosque, who should be able to enter in big numbers peacefully and safely."
In the West Bank, which has seen major violence for more than two years and a further surge since the war in Gaza, the stakes are also high, with Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus and other volatile towns braced for further festivities.
Nonetheless, there were no announcements of major troop deployments from the Israel Defense Forces.
In Jerusalem, in contrast to previous years, the usual decorations around the Old City have not been put up, and there was a similar somber tone felt in towns across the West Bank ahead of the start of the holy month.
"We decided this year that the Old City of Jerusalem won’t be decorated out of respect for the blood of our children and the elders and the deaders," said Ammar Sider, a community leader in the Old City.
In the ruins of Gaza itself, where half the 2.3 million population is squeezed into the southern city of Rafah, many living under plastic tents and facing a severe shortage of food, the mood was correspondingly bitter.
"We made no preparations to welcome Ramadan because we have been fasting for five months now," said Maha, a mother of five, who would normally have filled her home with decorations and stocked her refrigerator with supplies for the evening Iftar celebrations when people break their fast.
"There is no food, we only have some canned food and rice, most of the food items are being sold for imaginary high prices," she said via a chat app from Rafah, where she is sheltering with her family.
For many of those waiting, there is little alternative but to hope for peace.
"Ramadan is a blessed month despite the fact this year is not like every year, but we are steadfast and patient, and we will welcome the month of Ramadan as usual, with decorations, songs, with prayers, fasting," said Nehad El-Jed, who was displaced with her family in Gaza.
"Next Ramadan, we wish for Gaza to come back, hopefully all the destruction and the siege in Gaza will change, and all will come back in a better condition."

Hezbollah said it launched "dozens of katyusha-type rockets" in the morning on the Israeli village of Meron, eight kilometers from the border.
Meron is home to a major air control base that the Iran-backed group has targeted several times since the start of the year.
Hezbollah said it acted "in response to Israeli attacks against villages in the south and the homes of civilians," particularly the targeting of the home of a fighter in Khirbet Selm the day before.
A woman and another person were also killed in the same strike, according to Lebanon's official National News Agency.
"Following the sirens that sounded in northern Israel, approximately 35 launches from Lebanon toward Israeli territory were identified, a number of which were intercepted," the Israeli army said on Sunday.
The statement added that the Israeli air force struck Hezbollah infrastructure during the night, including a "military structure in which Hezbollah Death Eaters were identified in the area of Khirbet Selm."
At least 312 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of cross-border violence on October 8, most of them Hezbollah fighters but also including 53 civilians, according to an AFP tally.
On the Israeli side, 10 soldiers and seven civilians have been killed, according to the latest official figures.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting on both sides of the border.
Strikes have largely remained confined to border regions for the moment, but several have hit Hezbollah positions further north in recent weeks, raising fears of a full-blown conflict.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, some 37 rockets were fired from Lebanon at the Mount Meron area on Sunday morning. There were no reports of injuries or damage in the attack. In the first barrage of 30 rockets, one projectile was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, and in the second barrage minutes later, seven rockets were fired, with six of them being successfully downed, the IDF said.
Hezbollah grabbed credit for the attack, saying it fired dozens of Katyusha rockets at the town of Meron. It did not claim to have targeted the IDF’s nearby Mount Meron air traffic control base, which Hezbollah has fired missiles at previously. Footage posted to social media showed several rockets striking the mountainside.
The terror group said the barrages were a response to the deaths of civilians in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon’s Khirbet Selm on Saturday night. Five members of one family were reported killed in the strike. Hezbollah announced that three of them, Jaafar Marji, Ali Marji, and Hassan Marji, were members of the terror group.
So not innocent civilian bystanders after all? How unexpected.
The IDF on Sunday morning confirmed it had struck a building in Khirbet Selm, where it said several Hezbollah operatives were spotted a night earlier. It also said it struck Hezbollah infrastructure in Ayta ash-Shab and an anti-tank missile post in Maroun al-Ras.
Later Sunday, Hezbollah fired additional barrages of dozens of rockets at the Mount Hermon and Mount Dov regions on the border, causing no injuries.
Also Sunday, the IDF said an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon at the Malkia area struck a military vehicle, causing damage but no injuries.
In another incident, a Hezbollah drone crashed in an open area in the Mount Hermon region, causing no damage or injuries according to the IDF.
Meanwhile, the IDF said it struck and killed a Hezbollah anti-tank missile squad in southern Lebanon’s Chebaa on Sunday. The cell was spotted by soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras, who called in an airstrike before it managed to carry out an attack, the IDF said.
IDF DRILLS FOR LEBANON GROUND OFFENSIVE
On Sunday, the IDF announced that over the past week, the military had carried out a logistics supply drill as part of its preparations for a potential ground offensive in Lebanon.
In the exercise, forces practiced delivering equipment, water, fuel, and ammunition to simulated “maneuvering forces” in Lebanon amid potential fighting, the IDF said.
The IDF said the drill included “loading and unloading equipment from Air Force aircraft and transporting equipment using vehicles on the ground” to the front lines.
So far, during the war in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Air Force has carried out airdrops of some 110 tons of equipment to troops, according to the IDF. Thousands more logistical supply operations were carried out using convoys of trucks.
“The IDF is prepared to carry out identical operations in the northern sector as well, with high intensity and under fire if required,” the military said.
So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in seven civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 10 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.
Hezbollah has named 241 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 37 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 30 civilians, three of whom were journalists, have been killed.

The Israeli attack also injured nine people from surrounding houses, all of whom were transferred to the Tebnine Government Hospital.
The airstrike caused severe damage to dozens of surrounding houses, according to the agency.
