The 47-year-old was found guilty of serious arson and damage to property for the incident in June 2021, described by judges at the court in Ulm as an "antisemitism-motivated attack."
The accused is said to have poured gasoline on a wall of the synagogue and set fire to the fuel. A police officer intervened before the flames spread, putting the fire out with an extinguisher. The attack left burn marks on the building and one of its windows covered in soot.
The accused, who lived in Ulm before the attack, fled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... but returned to Germany in July 2023, where he was arrested. The ruling can still be appealed.

Permit me to retort. It is not every occupied structure in Gaza, only the ones that have been subverted by Hamas and used to wage war on their neighbors. Note that the criterion is not "occupied structure", but "used by Hamas". Definitely right about the mass human misery, though.
The problem is what to do about the existential threat Hamas poses to their neighbors, the Israelis. Words on paper and appeals to the angels of their better nature have not worked.
It is like having termites in your house. In the beginning, a quick spritz of bug spray solves the problem. Do nothing and later on when you have a full-blown infestation, the only fix is to evacuate all the people and fumigate the place.
Lots of people are whinging about the over-abundance of human misery, but no one has a better solution than what the IDF is doing now. I wish it were otherwise, but it is not.
