Africa Horn
Challenges mount for Darfur Joint Force after failure to protect civilians
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The official spokesperson for the joint force of Darfur gangs, signatories of the Juba peace agreement, has revealed that their limited capabilities are hindering the deployment of troops across the region.

Following the start of confrontations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, the signatories to the peace agreement established a joint force tasked with protecting civilians and commercial convoys in Darfur, as well as those heading to the western Sudan region. They emphasized that they would not take side in the conflict within the military component.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
this force has fallen short in ensuring the safety of civilians in significant Darfur locations including El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur, and now Nyala. The intense festivities that have erupted in South Darfur’s capital, raise doubts among the Darfur population about the force’s effectiveness, resources, and legitimacy.

In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Major Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, the head of the media committee for the joint force, stated on Saturday, "We have devised a plan to deploy forces across Darfur, but our limited capabilities and logistical support have prevented us from doing so."

Mustafa emphasized that the joint force operates autonomously and does not receive any assistance from the government. However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
he did not clarify whether the force receives compensation from Darfuri businessmen for escorting their commercial convoys.

He explained that the force’s efforts include securing the route connecting Kufra, Libya, to El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. This route is crucial for the transportation of food supplies, especially since numerous Sudanese factories have halted production due to destruction, suspension, or lack of resources.

Al-Shabaab war gains momentum in Somalia
[Garowe] The war against al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
has gained momentum in Somalia, with the Somali National Army [SNA] running riot in central and southern parts of the country, even before the second phase of operations against the group officially kicks off in the Horn of Africa nation.

For the last 10 months, the national army with assistance from the US Africa Command, African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] and local militia, has managed to liberate several strategic towns, leading to reinstatement of civilian administration in most of these regions.

On Saturday, al-Shabaab terrorists' hideouts were destroyed by the National Armed Forces, with the operation taking place in the forest between the Barak-Sheik Amir and Hussein-Agey locations in the Galgadud region. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Galmadug last week, where he called for collective responsibility in the fight against the krazed killers.

In central regions, the military is doing combing following a successful operation during the first phase which left over 3,000 Death Eaters dead. The first phase also left over 3,500 Death Eaters critically injured according to the data given by the Ministry of Information.

State media reports that five al-Shabaab Death Eaters were killed during operations conducted by the Somali National Army in the Gariley and Ali-Yabaal areas of the Galgadud region on Saturday. The operation also cleared Death Eaters hiding in the Jir-jir Hirey forest, Gen. Abdullahi Ali Anod, Somalia Defence Ministry front man, said.

The Chief of Defence Forces of Somalia, Gen. Ibrahim Sheikh Muhiyidin, met with troops stationed in the Adan-Yabal district of the Middle Shabelle region on Saturday. During his visit, state media noted, he received a security briefing from military officers on the ground and encouraged the troops to continue their fight against al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab Death Eaters pose a threat to regional integration besides threatening security in the East Africa region, the US Africa Command has repeatedly noted. al-Shabaab group has suffered immense losses in recent months following coordinated operations against them across the country.

Niger: Thousands queue to volunteer in armed forces
[AFRICANEWS] Thousands of people lined up outside the main stadium in Niamey on Saturday (Aug. 19) responding to the call for civilian auxiliaries in support of the armed forces.

The event organiser said the junta was not involved in this initiative, although it was aware of it.

Regional countries have threatened the Nigerien junta of a possible military intervention.

"I want to be a soldier for the love of my country. What's more, Niger is our country. I want to commit myself to Niger. Long live Niger!" Mamadou exclaimed.

"I've heard there that they need 5,000 or 10,000 volunteer soldiers. That's why I came here," Abdoulaye who is a footballer said.

Some parents brought their children to sign up, others said they'd been waiting since 3 a.m to answer a call from several organizations

Young people chanted in favour of the junta and against ECOWAS and the country's former colonial ruler La Belle France.

Hundreds of Wagner Group forces arrive to support Niger
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Hundreds of Wagner soldiers have reportedly arrived in the capital of Niger, as part of a military support unit as requested by the revolutionary government in Niamey.

The Wagner reinforcements are experienced anti-terrorist specialists, many of whom are battle-hardened veterans who fought against al-Qaeda, ISIS and the FSA in Syria.

The Wagner Group arrival coincides with an announcement by ECOWAS that a "D-Day" for its invasion of Niger has already been decided upon. Aside from Wagner support, Niger can reportedly also count on backing from Mali, Burkina Faso

Five Burkina Faso police officers, 40 'terrorists' die in clashes
[AlAhram] Five Burkinabe coppers have died in an attack in the centre-east of Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, with at least 40 of the attackers "neutralised" when the authorities launched a counter-attack, the army said Sunday.

The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon when members of a police mobile intervention force were targeted near Diougo-Yourga, in Koulpelogo province near the Togo border, the army said.

That attack "cost the lives of five coppers. Four others were evacuated and treated for injuries", the military added in a statement.

"In response, at least forty Lions of Islam were neutralised and equipment seized," it said.

Koulpelogo was the scene of another deadly attack on August 7, when around twenty people were killed in Nohao near the town of Bittou, according to security and local sources.

In mid-July, Burkina Faso's transitional president Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a September 2022 coup, deplored the "increasingly recurrent attacks against civilians", saying the jihadists were displaying "cowardice".

The apparent motive for the country's two coups in recent years was anger at failures to stem a jihadist insurgency since it spilled over from neighbouring Mali in 2015.

More than 16,000 civilians, troops and police have died in jihadist attacks, according to an NGO count, including more than 5,000 since the start of this year.

More than two million people have also been displaced within Burkina Faso, making it one of the worst internal displacement crises in Africa.

Arabia
Al-Qaeda kill list revealed, including numerous UAE-backed leaders
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Activists on social media posted on Sunday what they characterized as an al-Qaeda special list, which includes the names of UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) officials, like Aidarous al-Zubaidi and Shalal Shaya, who will be assassinated one after the other by the organization.

According to the activists, the al-Qaeda organization said in its post: "Who will be killed first by its hands, the commander of the counter-terrorism forces in the STC forces in Abyan

In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...

Iron Dome downs drone flying from Gaza toward Israel — IDF
[IsraelTimes] Military says aircraft didn’t enter Israeli airspace, posed no threat to civilians.

The Iron Dome air defense system shot down an unmanned aircraft flying from the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip toward Israel on Sunday morning, the military said.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the drone was heading from the southern part of the Strip toward Israeli airspace, and the interceptor missiles were fired at the device while it was still over Gaza.

The drone "did not pose a threat to civilians in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip," the IDF said, adding that sirens were not activated in the towns close to the border "according to protocol."

"From the moment it took off, air force systems followed its trajectory," the IDF said.

Paleostinian media reported a large explosion over the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

It was unclear if the drone belonged to the Gaza-ruling Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", or another terror group.

Israel typically does not interfere when Hamas conducts drone test flights, only when they are being flown out of the Strip.

The Iron Dome was first used operationally to intercept a Hamas drone in May 2021, during an 11-day conflict with Paleostinian terror groups in the Strip, known in Israel as Operation Guardian of the Walls. During the conflict, the system also mistakenly shot down an Israeli drone.

The IDF shot down drones over the Gaza Strip in March of this year, May 2022, and in November 2021.

Man charged for driving Palestinian who carried out deadly terror attack in Tel Aviv
[IsraelTimes] Shadi Ahmed Jaber from Tayibe indicted for transporting a number of West Bank Paleostinians staying in Israel illegally, including terrorist, to coastal city

Police filed an indictment Sunday against a man from the central Arab town of Tayibe for giving a ride to the Paleostinian terrorist, who carried out a deadly shooting attack in Tel Aviv earlier this month.

According to the indictment, Shadi Ahmed Jaber, 36, a shuttle driver, gave a ride to several Paleostinians who had illegally entered Israel on August 5, including Kamel Abu Bakr, who later killed Tel Aviv patrolman Chen Amir.

According to the military and the Shin Bet security agency’s initial investigation of the attack, on the morning of August 5, Abu Bakr snuck through the barrier near his hometown of Rummanah, near Jenin.

Abu Bakr then paid Jaber NIS 100 ($26) for the ride from the Baqa al-Gharbiyye area, close to the West Bank security barrier, to Tel Aviv, the indictment filed Sunday said.

Police said Abu Bakr had coordinated with the shuttle driver ahead of time for his pick-up.

Jaber was charged with knowingly transporting Paleostinians illegally staying in Israel, as well as driving without a license, as it had been revoked by a court on January 1.

His vehicle was seized by police and would be forfeited for the state, law enforcement officials said.

Abu Bakr, who had been wanted by Israel for a previous shooting attack against troops in the West Bank, had been hiding in the Jenin refugee camp for at least the past six months, according to defense officials.

Abu Bakr did not have an entry permit to Israel due to his affiliation with the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group in Jenin, and the previous shooting.

Abu Bakr spent several hours in Tel Aviv — armed with a handgun and carrying a "martyrdom" letter — searching for a target, according to law enforcement and defense officials.

When he reached the corner of Montefiore and Nahalat Binyamin streets, where dozens of restaurants, cafes, and bars are packed on Saturday evenings, Abu Bakr encountered two Tel Aviv municipal security officers who sought to question him.

Abu Bakr initially refused to answer their calls, and as the pair got off their cycle of violences, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, hitting Amir. The second officer returned fire, and neutralized the gunman.

Both Amir and the terrorist were taken to Ichilov Medical Center, where they were declared dead.

A day after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces measured Abu Bakr’s home ahead of a potential demolition.

Several Paleostinian hard boyz managed to enter Israel from the West Bank through gaps in the fence during a string of attacks in the spring of last year, whereupon the military deployed numerous units to the security barrier area.

The number of Paleostinians identified as illegally crossing through the barrier dropped from around 30,000 a day in March 2022 to several hundred a day since April 2022, and down further to several dozen a day in recent months, according to the IDF.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
More UNRWA schools taken over by armed groups in Ain el-Hellhole
[An Nahar] UNRWA says it has received reports that another school compound has now been taken over by gangs in the Ain el-Helweh Paleostinian refugee camp near Sidon.

"This brings the total number of schools taken over by gangs in the camp to eight, risking the start of the school year in time for 5,900 children," UNRWA warned.

"We are getting credible reports of severe damage to the school buildings and looting of children’s education material and equipment from the schools," it said.

"UNRWA reiterates its urgent call on all gangs to immediately vacate its premises in the Ain el-Helweh camp including schools and other service offices. Their presence is a grave violation of the neutrality and safety of U.N. installations and is a serious threat to the education for thousands of Paleostine refugee children living in the camp," UNRWA added.

"The Agency remains committed to delivering services in the camp including health, solid waste collection and relief services wherever possible across the camp. We call for open access throughout the camp so that the agency reaches all of the 50,000 Paleostine Refugees who rely on its assistance and services," it urged.

The camp has recently witnessed days of deadly armed festivities between the secular Fatah Movement and hardline Islamist groups.

Iran cracks down ahead of protest anniversary
[Rudaw] Iranian authorities have arrested at least a dozen women’s and human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
activists a month ahead of the anniversary of the death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini that sparked nationwide protests against the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

"Iranian authorities are using their go-to playbook of putting maximum pressure on peaceful dissidents ahead of the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death," said Human Rights Watch researcher Tara Sepehri Far in a report published on Saturday. "The arbitrary arrests of a dozen activists are aimed at suppressing popular discontent with ongoing impunity and rights violations."

The rights monitor reported 12 arrests in Gilan province in the north of the country in the past week, accused of "planning to disrupt security."

On Saturday, Hengaw organization reported the arrests of two Kurdish women. Khadijeh Mehdipour, described as a "former Kurdish political prisoner," was arrested and taken to Ilam prison to serve a three-month prison sentence on the charge of "spreading falsehoods." Ghazaleh Zare, who advocates for homeless children, was detained in late July and remains in jug on unknown charges.

Last September, Kurdish woman Mahsa (Jina) Amini died while in the custody of Tehran’s morality police. Her death sparked nationwide protests, often led by women demanding greater freedoms, removing their mandatory headscarves, and chanting Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom), a popular slogan of Kurdish activists.

Iranian authorities violent mostly peacefully suppressed the protests that posed one of the greatest challenges to the Islamic Theocratic Republic since its founding more than 40 years ago. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands were arrested, and authorities have introduced measures to enforce its dress code that requires women to cover their hair.

"Iranian authorities have also sought to suppress potential memorial events by families for some of the protesters killed in 2022," said Human Rights Watch.

Hengaw reported a buildup of military forces in Kurdish areas. "This deployment coincides with the approaching anniversary of the beginning of the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom) Movement, indicating the Iranian government's preparedness to face the potential resurgence of the widespread public protests," said the watchdog.

Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. Turkish bombardment kills two Syrian soldiers in Manbij: Monitor
[Rudaw] At least two Syrian soldiers were killed and four maimed in a suspected Ottoman Turkish bombardment near the city of Manbij in northern Syria, a war monitor reported.

A bombardment targeted a military checkpoint belonging to Syrian regime forces in Tukhar village in the eastern countryside of Manbij, killing two soldiers and injuring four, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

The monitor added that the number of casualties is expected to increase as some of the injured soldiers are at death's door.

The Syrian government has not commented on the incident yet.

Manbij is a strategically located town at a crossroads connecting Aleppo, Raqqa, and the Kurdish-administered northeast. It is under the control of the Manbij Military Council, a local force affiliated with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Turkey accuses the Syrian Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the backbone of the SDF, of being the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an gang struggling for Kurdish rights in Turkey and named a terror group by Ankara. The YPG denies the charge.

The SDF is the main ally of the US-led global coalition against ISIS in Rojava.
