Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief August 10, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • LEAKED DOCUMENT PURPORTEDLY SHOWS US INVOLVEMENT IN FORMER PM KHAN’S OUSTER – The document was published by The Intercept and is said to have been leaked from Pakistan by an anonymous source in the Pakistani military. The document details a meeting between two State Department officials and Pakistan’s (then) Ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed Khan that took place on 7 March 2022. One of the State Department officials at the meeting was said to be Donald Lu, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs. The information appears to substantiate previous reports published in some Indian news outlets as well as in Dawn, a respected Pakistani publication. Ultimately, the report contends that the idea for a ‘vote of no confidence’ was proposed by Lu and that several penalties were discussed should Khan be allowed to lead the country. For his part, the former PM has consistently referred to the report as proof the US was behind his ouster. A State Department spokesman dismissed the report and said the comments did not provide proof the US Government had interfered in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

  • TALIBAN REJECT PAKISTAN’S CLAIMS THAT AFGHANS PARTICIPATED IN RECENT TERROR ATTACKS – The Taliban took exception to many in Pakistan’s Government who have claimed that Afghans had been involved in the recent attacks. The Taliban’s chief spokesman read out a statement detailing the number of Pakistanis who had been killed in counter-ISIS operations and said that dozens more were being imprisoned for suspected terrorism-related charges. The Taliban then said that Pakistan should stop blaming them for their own internal security issues. Throughout the course of all these traded accusations, very little proof has been provided to substantiate either side’s claims.

  • MINISTRY OF VICE AND VIRTUE FORBIDS MAGIC AND SPELL CASTING – The Ministry has instructed officials in Provinces and Districts to check on the sorcerers and witches (colloquially known as Jadugars) operating in their jurisdictions and to prosecute those whose practices run contra to Sharia Law.
So the ones who comply with Sharia are ok? Good to know.
  • RETIRED GOVERNMENT WORKERS DEMONSTRATE AGAIN IN KABUL – Despite an announcement earlier in the year, it appears that many retired personnel still are not receiving their pensions. A group gathered at the Pension Department in Kabul to state their case and attempt to draw attention to the economic problems they face daily. It is not clear where the regime stands on paying these former employees.
Are they Taliban? If not, why on earth would the Taliban, having reconquered what they consider to be their country, feel obliged to fulfill the promises made during the interregnum?
There are rumors that anyone who served under the former regime was being scrutinized and, depending on their former roles, may not be authorized their retirement. There are also reports that women and specific ethnic groups are receiving similar scrutiny.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab wives in military court over their husbands' crimes
[Garowe] Four wives of al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
turbans have been arraigned in a military court over crimes purportedly committed by their husbands, in one of the most momentous trials which could shape the fight against al-Shabaab, a group that has been wreaking havoc in Somalia for over 16 years.

The wives, prosecutors said, are being charged over terror-related incidents, in a trial that has attracted members of the international community, and that perhaps could shape the fight against terrorism, in a country that faces dangers from not only al-Shabaab but also ISIS-Somalia group.

Military court documents recognized the women as Aisho Muhyadin Mohamud, Khadro Mohammed Isse, Nimo Farah Sheikh-Doon, and Sahro Isse Hussein. They were charged with aiding and abetting al-Shabaab activities in the country, leading to the deaths of several members of the public.

Records from the court show that a number of women were initially in darkness on activities done by their husbands. However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
they denied having prior knowledge and collaborating with their husbands to wage attacks against innocent civilians and members of security forces.

Evidence presented in court notes that security forces noticed bags containing bombs in the vehicle where the women and a driver traveled from the Kunyo Barrow area in the Lower Shabelle region. Prosecutors said the women were going to their husbands at the time.

According to the driver, he had been given the assignment to deliver the devices to Bakara market in Mogadishu, an indictment that could put the ladies in trouble. The court is set to rule on the case in the coming days, and should there be a conviction, the case would be a landmark for future proceedings on terrorism in court.

Lots of possible miscreants in Quetta, so this could be War on Terror.
[Dawn] Five people, including two coppers, were maimed on Wednesday in a hand grenade attack on Quetta’s Joint Road, hospital officials said.

Quetta Civil Hospital spokesperson Dr Waseem Baig told Dawn.com that the injured, which included a woman and two police officials, were brought to the hospital.

He said that the injured were being provided medical attention, adding that they were "out of danger".

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Captain (retired) Zohaib Mohsin said that initially an exchange of fire had taken place between police and unknown miscreants, after which the latter hurled a hand grenade and fled from the scene.

He visited the site of the incident and sought a briefing from the station house officer of the relevant cop shoppe.

The SSP said that in light of Independence Day, security in the city was on "high alert". He said that police officials in plainclothes had also been deployed across the city for surveillance purposes.

PKK kills three Turkish soldiers in Kurdistan Region
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish defence ministry on Wednesday announced that three of its soldiers were killed and two others were maimed by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region.

The ministry said in a statement that the PKK opened fire on Ottoman Turkish soldiers in Duhok province, killing two and injuring three others. One of the injured succumbed to his wounds. One of the dead is a commander.

The PKK has not commented on the attack.

Ankara has in the past few years intensified its campaign to eliminate the presence of PKK fighters around its borders, launching several operations in the Kurdistan Region as well as Syria where it claims to target alleged proxies of the group.

In 2019, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
launched Operation Claw against the PKK in Khakurk. This was followed by Operation Claw-Tiger in June 2020. The third edition of the offensive was a ground and air cross-border operation, dubbed Operation Claw-Lightning and Operation Claw-Thunderbolt, launched in April 2021. All of these operations focused on the PKK’s positions in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province.

Turkey sent its army back into the Kurdistan Region in April of last year, launching Operation Claw-Lock with the goal of targeting PKK positions in Metina, Zap, Avashin, and Basyan areas in northern Duhok province. The operation, according to Ankara, aims to remove the PKK from the bordering areas and cut off its access to mainland Turkey.

Wednesday’s incident took place in the Operation Claw-Lock region, according to the Ottoman Turkish defence ministry.

Two drone attacks in Sulaimani province killed and injured several people on Wednesday. The PKK media blamed Ankara but local officials said the drone was unidentified.

Loose lips sink ships.
[IsraelTimes] Court finds all three were manipulated by alleged Iranian agent, none had intention of harming state security, though one woman should have balked at request to provide information

Two Israelis were cleared Wednesday of charges that they spied for Iran, while a third was convicted on a related charge, wrapping up a case that began with serious espionage accusations against five nationals with either personal or family ties to the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

The three, a man and two women, faced charges of contact with a foreign agent and providing information that could be useful to the enemy.

Israel foils smuggling of small reconnaissance drones to Gaza Strip
[IsraelTimes] Defense Ministry says package of 10 quadcopters was hidden in minibus being imported from West Bank; devices suspected to have been intended for use by terror groups

Israeli security guards at the Erez border crossing into the northern Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip foiled an attempt to smuggle small drones into the Paleostinian enclave, the Defense Ministry announced Wednesday.

According to the ministry, during an inspection of a minibus that was being imported to the Gaza Strip from the West Bank, a canine detected a suspicious package on the vehicle.

The ministry said that concealed within a black bag, the guards found 10 quadcopters, suspected to have been intended for reconnaissance use by terror groups in the Gaza Strip.

The Shin Bet security agency was also involved in the investigation.

Israel has maintained a blockade of the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",-ruled coastal strip since the terror group violent mostly peacefully took over the territory from the Paleostinian Authority in 2007. Israel says the measure is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring weapons.

The Defense Ministry’s Crossing Authority keeps a close watch on trucks bearing humanitarian aid and consumer products that enter Gaza — sometimes hundreds a day — in order to monitor and track the goods entering the Strip and prevent them from winding up in the hands of terrorist groups.

Palestinians to be charged for seriously injuring man in Jerusalem terror stabbing
[IsraelTimes] Three teenagers from Bethlehem allegedly purchased butcher knives, set out for Gilo neighborhood ’with the aim of murdering a Jew’

Three Paleostinian teenagers are to be charged for carrying out a terror attack in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood last month, during which they stabbed and seriously maimed an Israeli man, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

In a joint statement, the Israel Police and the Shin Bet security agency said they had completed their investigation into the July 20 stabbing, and filed a declaration notifying the suspects and court of an indictment expected in the coming days. The trio are also to be held in jug for four more days, until August 11.

According to the police and Shin Bet investigation, the three Paleostinian suspects, aged 17-19, from the West Bank city of Bethlehem, met on the day of the attack, bought three "large butcher knives" and set out toward nearby Gilo "with the aim of murdering a Jew and becoming deaders."

Law enforcement officials said they drove from the Paleostinian town of Beit Jala toward Gilo on a dirt road, then got out and continued by foot.

When they arrived in Gilo, the suspects kept the knives concealed on their persons and searched for a Jewish victim to stab, police and the Shin Bet said.

"The bandidos holy warriors met a young local resident on the street. After they addressed him and they realized that he was indeed a Jew by his answer, they brutally stabbed him several times," the joint statement said.

The trio then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace of the attack back toward Bethlehem.

One of the knives remained lodged in the back of the victim, 25-year-old Or Sayer, while another was found by security forces at the scene. The third knife remained with one of the stabbers.

Less than two days later, the three suspects were detained by the military in Bethlehem.

An indictment against the trio, charging them with terror offenses, will be filed in the coming days, police said.

Sayar has remained hospitalized at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center since the attack. The hospital said that upon arrival, he was in very serious and unstable condition, and was taken into surgery. It later said he was stable but still at death's door, sedated and intubated, in the intensive care ward.

Clashes Erupted Between Hezbollah and Residents in Lebanon's Kahaleh, killing one each Hezbollah and Christian

A Hezbollah arms truck flipped over Wednesday on the Kahale road after which a shootout
with residents erupted, media reports said.

TV networks said Hezbollah members opened fire in the area, killing a Kahale resident and wounding another person. One Hezbollah member was also killed in the incidents according to reports.

The army was meanwhile trying to contain the situation in the area after the withdrawal of Hezbollah’s members, amid an attempt by residents to prevent the removal of the truck.

Kahale mayor Abdo Abi Khalil said residents of the [Christian] town surrounded the truck demanding to know what was inside.

Hezbollah members escorting the truck shot up the residents to keep them at bay, killing one person, Abi Khalil said.

In a statement, Hezbollah said that one of its members was maimed during the incident and later died of his injuries.

"A number of gunnies from the militias present in the area gathered and attacked" those escorting the truck, read the statement.

"They began by throwing rocks, and then opened fire," it said.

A statement issued by the Aley department of the Lebanese Forces

party meanwhile said that Kahaleh resident Fadi Youssef Bejjani was killed by gunfire as he was trying to rescue the truck's driver, calling on the army and security forces to arrest the shooters, confiscate the truck, conduct the necessary investigations and prevent "militia-like" practices.

A statement by residents of Kahale, read on local television, said the townspeople would seal off the road, which runs from Beirut to Damascus, until authorities disclose the contents of the truck.

"The truck belongs to Hezbollah and we don’t know what’s in it and we have left things to the Lebanese Army to control the situation," sources close to Hezbollah told al-Jadeed TV.

"The army will erect additional checkpoints to control the situation in Kahale and remove the truck’s cargo," the sources added.

Kahale’s municipal police chief meanwhile told MTV that the town’s residents will not allow the removal of the truck. "We lost a young man who fell dead on the church’s stairs after they opened fire on us," he added.

"Several buildings in Kahale came under gunfire and the army is continuing to prevent residents from approaching the truck," MTV reported.

"Security officials received phone calls from Hezbollah officials who asked them not to intervene in what’s happening in Kahale," the TV network added.
Subsequently An Nahar reported that early today the Lebanese army took the truck and its load of Hezbollah munitions to the Ministry of Defense in Beirut, and:
A funeral is due to be held on Thursday for Ahmad Ali Kassas, the Hezbollah member who was killed in the festivities.

Hezbollah supporters posted pictures on social media showing Kassas dressed in military fatigues in Syria, a country at war where Hezbollah has been fighting on the side of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Thirty ISIS members detained in Iraq, Syria in July: CENTCOM
[Rudaw] The US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday announced that 30 Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) members were detained in Iraq and Syria in July, following operations conducted with local allies.

CENTCOM said in its monthly report on the anti-ISIS mission that 31 operations were carried out in July. Twenty of them were in Iraq and the remaining 11 were conducted in Syria.

The report indicates that in Iraq, two ISIS operatives were killed and 24 were detained. In Syria, three members were killed and six were detained.

"Thanks to the efforts of our Coalition-supported partners, we have seen a dramatic reduction in ISIS activity and effectiveness across our area of operations," the report cited Major General Matthew McFarlane who reiterated the US commitment to advising, assisting, and enabling its partners in the "lead towards an enduring defeat of ISIS".

At least 21 ISIS holy warriors were detained and 13 others were killed in joint operations between US forces and local armed forces in Iraq and Syria in June.

An ISIS leader was arrested in the province of Deir ez-Zor in northeast Syria (Rojava) by the Kurdish forces on July 22.

ISIS seized control of vast swathes of land on both sides of the border in 2014 and was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019. While the group no longer controls any territory, it continues to pose a serious security risk through bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions.

The coalition advises and provides aerial assistance to Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army as well as the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against ISIS. In recent weeks, the SDF has carried out a string of raids against ISIS targets in northeast Syria (Rojava), in coordination with the US-led global coalition.
