Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief August 6, 2023
The Afghan Digest is back again after a short hiatus.
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • PAKISTAN PREPARING FOR POSSIBLE RIOTS AFTER FORMER PM KHAN ARRESTED AND SENTENCED – The former Prime Minister was arrested in Lahore on 5 August after a court ruled on his involvement in a corruption scandal. Leaders of the PTI party called for only peaceful protests but the response was limited on the evening of the 5th and observers have credited the lack of public disobedience to the government’s crackdown after the 9 May riots. Lawyers for the former Prime Minister say they are appealing the conviction. Still, other legal experts say the ruling is likely enough to keep Khan from campaigning for the upcoming elections. As a precaution, Pakistan has deployed several thousand police to keep an eye on any potential gatherings.

  • TORKHAM CLOSES FOR SHORT PERIOD YESTERDAY, DISPUTE BETWEEN BORDER GUARDS BLAMED FOR CLOSURE – A confrontation between Taliban and Pakistani border security forces forced the closure of the crossing for less than an hour on Saturday. The issue involved Afghan children who are often hired to carry products from one side of the border to the other. Local eyewitnesses say that Pakistani security personnel halted the children and the Taliban security personnel objected to the stoppage. The Taliban Commissioner for the border crossing announced later on Saturday that the gate had been reopened. In a separate report, Afghans who had recently traveled through Torkham complained to TOLO News that Pakistani police continue to demand bribes from Afghans in order to pass.

  • POLICE ROUNDUP IN KARACHI NETS SEVERAL AFGHAN NATIONALS – A moderate police operation was carried out in Karachi on Saturday and at least 8 Afghans were detained. Initial reports suggested the roundup was part of a counter-terrorism operation but we have had no additional confirmation that this was the case.

  • 5.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES BADAKHSHAN, TREMORS FELT IN PAKISTAN AND INDIA – The earthquake struck on Saturday evening and its epicenter was calculated to be near Jurm, Badakhshan at a depth of 200km. While the quake was deep, it still could be felt across the region. No casualties or damage had yet been reported.

NEXT 24 HOURS
PROTEST THREAT TO CONTINUE IN PAKISTAN AFTER KHAN’S ARREST – Police have deployed anti-riot squads in most major cities to counter any potential protests by PTI party members in the wake of Khan’s arrest on 5 August. The former Prime Minister released a video calling for his followers to protest peacefully but to ‘not sit silently at home’. Gatherings in Punjab on the afternoon of 5 August were sparsely attended and no violence was reported. However, Pakistan’s security forces appear to be in no mood to countenance any domestic disturbances. The former PM is being held at Attock jail (Punjab Province) and locals say there is a massive security presence in Attock. A source in Islamabad said that a risk of major protests is not likely at this time but will materialize in the coming days as the National Assembly is dissolved and the possible announcement that elections could be delayed by as many as 3 months. At-risk Afghans in Pakistan are advised to exit any public areas where possible gatherings take place.

Woman Brutally Beheaded in Takhar Province by Unknown Assailants

Reports have emerged from Takhar province, detailing a heinous incident in which an unidentified woman fell victim to a brutal beheading by assailants in the region.

According to local sources, on Saturday, August 5th, a woman identified as Masouma was tragically subjected to this gruesome act. The assailants responsible for this horrifying crime remain unidentified, and the incident occurred in the village of Jilamkhor, located within the Khaja Ghar district of Takhar province.

The victim’s husband, Abdullah Qezel, resides in the same village of Jilamkhor.
Might be the Taliban, might be an honour killing, might be a clan or other feud, might be the Afghan version of dacoits. It might even be just because it was Tuesday, and someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
While the identities of the assailants are yet to be determined, speculation has arisen linking this incident to the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
. This conjecture stems from the grim nature of the act and suggests a potential association of the group with the woman’s tragic demise.

This brutal event unfolded during the congregation of local residents for Friday prayers, further deepening the shock and dismay within the community.

Masouma, the victim, was a mere 21 years old, her life cut short by this appalling act.

As of the present moment, the Taliban have not issued any statement concerning the incident, leaving the community and authorities anxiously awaiting any official communication.

This grim occurrence follows another tragic event within the past two weeks, involving the fatal shooting of two women in the Baharak district of Takhar.

ISIS Shoots Dead Individual Accused of Collaborating with Taliban in Kunar Province

Local sources have reported that members of ISIS-K rubbed out a civilian on charges of "espionage" for the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
in Kunar Province
...one of the four N2KL provinces (Nangarhar, Nuristan, Kunar and Laghman). N2KL is the designation used by US and Coalition Forces for the rugged and very violent region opposite Pakistain's Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Northwest Frontier Province. Kunar is the center of the N2KL region. Its population is 95% Pashtun. It is adjacent to Bajaur Agency..
The incident was confirmed by sources to Hasht-e Subh on Sunday, August 5th. The event reportedly took place in the Chalas area of the Sukai district within the province.

According to these sources, the victim was rubbed out on Wednesday, August 1st. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
no information regarding the identity of the dear departed individual has been disclosed thus far.

As of now, local Taliban officials in Kunar have refrained from commenting on this matter.

Based on available information, ISIS fighters are active in various districts of Kunar, including Noorgul, Sukai, Manogai, Chapadara, and other areas. These fighters occasionally target Taliban members.

Despite the Taliban’s claims regarding their success in suppressing ISIS gunnies in Afghanistan, the latter group has recently intensified its activities against the former.

In the most recent ISIS attack, which occurred during a mourning ceremony for a Taliban deputy governor in Badakhshan, several high-ranking members of the group were killed and injured. Dozens of Taliban members also bit the dust in this attack.

Local sources in Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
have reported that four tribal elders were maimed during a physical altercation between Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
members and civilians.

According to the sources, the clash took place on Wednesday, August 2, in the Troi district of the province. The confrontation occurred when Taliban fighters attempted to forcibly hand over several privately-owned shops in the Turi market to individuals affiliated with the group.

Eyewitnesses say that the incident escalated with gunfire and the use of blunt weapons, resulting in the four tribal elders sustaining gunshot wounds and injuries.

The injured individuals were promptly transported to a provincial hospital in Paktika for medical treatment.

As of now, local Taliban officials in Paktika have not commented on the matter.

This incident comes in the wake of yesterday’s events in the Zazai Aryoub district of Paktia province, where one man lost his life, and two others were maimed due to gunfire from Taliban fighters.

Africa Horn
Police arrest six Al-Shabaab foreign recruits in Kenya at Somalia border
[Garowe] Multi-agency security forces arrested six al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
recruits on their way to neighboring Somalia, police confirmed on Friday, with the suspects caught seeking directions to the Horn of Africa nation, where the holy warriors are domiciled.

The six, officials said, were arrested in Garissa, one of the counties which have been struggling with insecurity for decades in Kenya. They were all set to join al-Shabaab fighters, police said after multiple interviews with them following their arrest by the authorities.

Police identified the six as Muhamed Jahad Farah, Saad Suleiman Saleh, Nadrik Mbwana Salum, Abdul Kadir Salum Seif, and Ali Issa Ali, all Tanzanian Nationals, and Hassan Tourabih Kintosa, a Ugandan National.

Already, police are processing them for prosecution, and upon successful conclusion of investigations, they will be arraigned in court to face terrorism-related charges under Kenyan law. Their arrest comes at the time Kenya has increased surveillance in the region.

The arrests come barely two weeks after another arrest of three Tanzanian nationals namely Abdul Saif Salimu, Zuberi Ngare Mtondoo, and Seif Abdalla Juma at Korakora, Garissa, after the public reported their presence in the area.

Officials said two other Tanzanians Abdirahman Shaffi Mkwatili, 25, and Sadam Jafari Kitia, 30, were nabbed on July 12 in the possession of a notebook scribbled in Swahili that they were using to guide their movement from Tanzania to Jilib, the Star reports.

"Members of the public are encouraged to continue sharing information with relevant security agencies," said regional commissioner John Otieno, while congratulating locals for opening up and sharing intelligence briefs.

The security agencies cautioned Public Service Vehicle operators to be alert and share any information on the movement of suspicious foreigners. Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki and his Defence counterpart Aden Duale have been camping in Northeastern as they look for a strategy to defeat al-Shabaab.

"The ongoing war against terrorism by the security agencies continues to frustrate the recruitment and facilitation of recruits destined to Somalia to join al-Shabaab," a police report said.

Al Shabaab big turban meeting in Hiiraan airstruck, dozens may be toes up
[Garowe] The al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
Lions of Islam suffered significant blows on Saturday following a coordinated operation in the Hiiraan region, state media reported, in the latest wave of operations targeting fighters, who are directly responsible for instability within the country, given the level of sophisticated attacks.

According to state media, with the help of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] and the US Africa Command, the Somali National Army [SNA] fired missiles at al-Shabaab Lions of Islam who are said to have been in a meeting, conducted by big shots of the group.

Abdirahman al-Adala, the Deputy Information said of the federal government of Somalia, said the troops conducted the Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
at Qoob Yahaas, a village within Hiiraan state. The officer for not reveal the number of people who were killed in the attack, but reports indicate dozens of the Lions of Islam may have died.

"The army and their allies dismantled the location, neutralizing the Lions of Islam who had assembled there. They also destroyed two vehicles carrying the leaders of the Khawarij who were present. We will provide information about the casualties," he said.

Last week, the government confirmed that over 160 Lions of Islam may have been killed in the operations, mainly within central and southern parts of the country. Most of the Lions of Islam were killed on the battlefield following combats engineered by the Somali National Army with support from international partners.

Ten Somali gov’t officials spying for Al-Shabaab nabbed in major crackdown
[GoobjoogNews] Ten babus government employees believed to be the focal persons for the bad boy group al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
in government have been arrested, Information Minister Daud Aweis has said.

Aweis told journalists Friday in Mogadishu that a clandestine operation by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) revealed that the individuals were stationed in various government departments and had been supplying information to the group.

The minister did not name the individuals and neither did he indicate the department they were working in but noted the arrest of the individuals was a major step in ridding the government of government infiltration.

""Today’s revelation underscores the unwavering commitment of our security forces to unmask and neutralize agents of terror lurking within our institutions," Aweis said.

The Minister added that some individuals managed to escape. It is not clear if those who escaped are among two individuals singled out by NISA.

NISA sent out a public notice Friday evening about two individuals whom it said escaped following investigations. According to the alert, the individuals are named as Abdisatar Abdiqadir Isse and Ayanle Mohammed Ali.

The state news agency SONNA reported that the two were previously working for the Federal Government.

The arrest of the ten individuals, considered one of the largest swoops in government follows the suicide kaboom on Jalle Siyad Military Academy in Mogadishu which claimed the lives of at least 30 soldiers.

The jacket wallah was reportedly part of the soldiers who had come from Lower Shabelle region for refresher training at the academy. Several soldiers have since been arrested.

Africa North
Large Drug Trafficking Ring Arrested in Libya
[LibyaReview] The Libyan Attorney General’s Office announced the arrest of 17 suspects, including employees at the Misrata seaport.

The Attorney General also issued warrants for the arrest of 30 others, all accused of being involved in a drug trafficking ring.

The case is related to the supply of approximately 3 million tablets of the drug known as "Pregabalin" in the cities of Zliten, Zawiya, al-Ajilat, and al-Zintan.

According to the statement released by the Attorney General’s Office, the suspects forged and used fake official documents related to the approval of importing the drugs through the seaports.

The suspects entered the drugs into the country through illegal means and then sold them on the black market in the aforementioned cities.

They have confessed to their involvement in drug trafficking and obtaining the drugs from multiple sources. The Attorney General’s Office has also called for the extradition of those involved in the drug trafficking from abroad.

Last month, six international drug smugglers were killed in festivities with forces affiliated with the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU).

According to a statement released by the Libyan Army’s 444th Combat Brigade, the Libyan forces set up an ambush in the desert, and arrested three smugglers. They also destroyed a convoy of several armed vehicles that were cutting off roads, and smuggling narcotics.

"After armed festivities, our forces were able to target all the vehicles and kill six foreign smugglers, and three others were arrested," the statement said.

Two soldiers from the Libyan army were maimed, during the festivities.

In June, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Libya successfully intercepted a large drug shipment from Benghazi to Misrata and apprehended the drug pusher behind the operation.

This bust was conducted following intelligence received by the CID’s investigation and inference unit indicating that a consignment of cannabis was to be transported from Benghazi to Misrata. The source further confirmed the details about the vehicle type, color, and other specifics, which was loaded onto a car carrier truck.

Drug trafficking is a major issue in Libya, with the country serving as a transit point for drugs smuggled from Africa to Europe. The ongoing political crisis and instability in the country have made it difficult to control drug trafficking and other criminal activities.

Terrorist killed in encounter with security forces in Rajouri

A terrorist was killed in the Khawas area of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
on Saturday in an encounter with security forces, the police official said.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of Jammu Mukesh Singh said that the police force has been deployed at the spot.

"Encounter going on at Khawas area of Rajouri. Police party on the spot. As per ground feedback one terrorist killed so far," Singh said.

More details are awaited.

Hijab Row In Tripura: Girls Stopped From Entering School, Boy Thrashed For Protesting
At your feet or at your throat: political Moslems playing Alinsky to move forward the soft jihad of the law. They know girls may not wear face-covering “hijab” to school, but they’re causing trouble to get it accepted anyway.
[OneIndia] Members of a right-wing group in Tripura allegedly assaulted a Moslem boy who objected to their preventing Moslem girls from entering a school while wearing hijab. The victim, a class 10 student, was reportedly dragged out and beaten in front of the school, with no teachers, including the headmaster, coming to his aid.

The incident caused outrage among locals, leading to road blockades in protest. The attackers were said to be outsiders with no affiliation to the school.

Authorities have stated that the situation is now under control in the Bishalgarh subdivision of Sepahijala district, which was tense following the incident.

According to the school authorities, a week prior to the incident, a group of former students, claiming affiliation with a right-wing organization, visited the school and raised concerns about Moslem girl students wearing hijab on the premises. They requested the headmaster to impose a ban, citing non-compliance with the prescribed government uniform. In the absence of clear instructions from the concerned government department regarding such a rule, the headmaster verbally informed the students not to wear hijab in the school.

The police have denied that the incident is communal, despite some platforms reporting it as such. They have started the paperwork but haven't done much else and are actively investigating the matter.

In the area, known for its diverse population with members of different communities, heavy police deployment has been implemented as a precautionary measure. Classes have been suspended to de-escalate the situation.

State authorities are closely monitoring the developments and working to resolve the issue and restore peace in the region.

Terrorist kills patrolman in Tel Aviv, is shot dead by 2nd officer
[IsraelTimes] Police say municipal officers sought to question suspect from Jenin on corner of Montefiore and Nachalat Binyamin streets when he opened fire, killing Chen Amir, 42

A Tel Aviv municipal patrol officer was killed in a terror shooting in a bustling area of Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, police and medics said. The gunman, a member of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group, was rubbed out by the patrol officer’s colleague.

Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said the two Tel Aviv municipal security officers approached a suspect they saw walking at the corner of the Montefiore and Nachalat Binyamin streets, where dozens of restaurants, cafes, and bars are packed on Saturday evenings.

The suspect initially refused to answer their calls, and as the pair got off their cycle of violences, the Paleostinian man pulled out a handgun and opened fire, hitting one of the patrolmen, according to law enforcement officials.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said the officer, later named as 42-year-old Chen Amir, was critically hurt after being shot in the head. He was taken to the nearby Ichilov Hospital, where medical officials declared his death.

"Chen... was killed while preventing with his body a larger attack and in his death saved many lives," a statement from the hospital said.

Ichilov added that his family agreed to donate his organs. Amir was a married father of three.

The second officer returned fire at the gunman. Footage showed the moment the second security patrolman chased after him and shot him.

The terrorist was also taken to the Ichilov Hospital, which later declared his death.

The officer who shot the gunman said he and his partner spotted the suspect standing near a bar with a backpack. "He didn’t make eye contact as we approached him on our noisy cycle of violences, which increased our suspicions," the officer told Shabtai at the scene.

"My partner was first, he managed to prop up his cycle of violence, but at the same moment the terrorist pulled out a handgun and started shooting at my partner," the officer said.

"I pulled out my handgun and fired at him. He also tried to fire a bullet or two at me but they didn’t hit. I chased after him and continued shooting until he fell to the ground," the officer added.

Shabtai hailed the officer, saying that "there is no doubt that your quick and professional action saved a life."

"A few meters away from us you can see the crowded cafes and understand the magnitude of the disaster that was avoided. It is thanks to your vigilance and engaging [the gunman]," Shabtai added.

The Paleostinian gunman was identified by the Shin Bet security agency as a member of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad terror group in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

According to the Shin Bet, Kamel Abu Bakr, 22, a resident of Rummanah — a town near Jenin — had been hiding in the Jenin refugee camp for the past six months. He had been wanted by Israeli security forces for opening fire at IDF troops in the West Bank.

Abu Bakr did not have an entry permit to Israel due to his affiliation with Islamic Jihad and the previous shooting attack.

The agency was investigating how he entered Israel.

The police commissioner told media at the scene that the suspect had a "martyrdom" letter on him, adding that "he came to be a martyr."

Masses protest judicial overhaul, with toned-down Tel Aviv rally in shadow of terror attack
The US State Department must still be handing out crinkling envelopes to the cadres, because their Nudge computer models predict that Bibi must just give up and go away.
[IsraelTimes] Organizers coordinate with police, don’t play music or try to block roads as over 100,000 demonstrate in city shortly after fatal shooting; tens of thousands protest elsewhere

Masses rallied nationwide Saturday evening for the 31st consecutive week against the government’s attempt to overhaul the judiciary, with the main rally in Tel Aviv being held in the shadow of a fatal Paleostinian terror attack in the city that took place just as the demonstrations were beginning.

Some 105,000 people were estimated by Channel 13 — citing the CrowdSolutions firm — to have attended the main rally at Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street, which began following a march from Kikar Dizengoff that started at 7 p.m. — around when the shooting attack took place elsewhere in the city.

Tel Aviv municipal security officer Chen Amir, 42, was shot and killed by a member of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group after the terrorist raised officers’ suspicion in the bustling Nachalat Binyamin neighborhood. The terrorist was rubbed out by Amir’s colleague, and a senior police source was later quoted by the Ynet news site as saying the gunman had possibly planned to target the anti-overhaul protesters at Kaplan.

In light of the attack, protest organizers held the mass rally as planned, with increased police presence and without music being played from the loudspeakers during the demonstration. They also didn’t move to block roads, as they have in most weeks after the rally — in order to not complicate access for the security forces and emergency services in the attack’s aftermath.

"Even in difficult and painful moments, it is our duty to keep fighting for Israeli democracy," organizers said in a statement. "The regime coup harms national security and the Israeli society’s resilience."

Other rallies were held in about 150 other locations around the country, including thousands near Netanyahu’s private residence in Jerusalem as well as thousands in Haifa, Herzliya, Netanya, Hod Hasharon, Rehovot and many other cities.

The protests even reached the neighboring island of Cyprus, where National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir — who is in charge of police and has consistently urged more forceful treatment toward anti-overhaul protesters — spent the weekend. Photos published on social media showed dozens of Israelis demonstrating during Shabbat near where Ben Gvir was staying in the city of Paphos.

Last week, politicians approved a bill that prevents judges from striking down government and ministerial decisions on the basis they are "unreasonable."

The law was approved by all 64 coalition members — with the entire 56-strong opposition boycotting the vote — despite the sustained mass protests, vehement opposition from top judicial, security, economic and public figures, repeated warnings from allies, chief among them the US, and thousands of military reservists vowing to quit service.

Petitions against the law have been filed to the High Court, with an unprecedented 15-judge panel to hear them next month.

In recent interviews with US media on the reasonableness law, the prime minister has repeatedly refused to say whether he would adhere to a potential ruling in which the High Court of Justice strikes down a Basic Law, and warned the court against doing so. Other members of his Likud party have said such a ruling would be respected, but would nevertheless cause a crisis in the country.

Two settlers arrested over West Bank killing of Palestinian, lawyers say it was self-defence
[IsraelTimes] Police say 5 more detained after violence in Burqa, during which Qusai Jamal Matan was killed; one suspect formerly worked for politician from coalition’s far-right Otzma Yehudit.

Two Israeli settlers were arrested and another five were detained over their suspected involvement in the killing of a young Paleostinian man in the West Bank, police said Saturday.

The prime suspect who allegedly opened fire was hospitalized after he was injured in festivities.

The second arrested individual formerly worked as an aide for a politician from the far-right Otzma Yehudit party. Both are residents of the illegal West Bank outpost of Migron.

"As of now, two Israelis were arrested for questioning and five were detained," a police spokeswoman said in a statement Saturday morning.

On Friday night, 19-year-old Qusai Jamal Matan was fatally shot in the neck in the West Bank town of Burqa, close to Ramallah, according to Paleostinian health officials and Israeli defense sources. He was buried on Saturday.

According to the PA’s official Wafa news agency, the festivities broke out after settlers attacked the village, leading residents to confront them.

The Israel Defense Forces said that according to witnesses, festivities had erupted adjacent to Burqa after Israeli settlers from a nearby outpost herded sheep in the area. Paleostinians from the town then approached the settlers to distance them from their lands, when a verbal confrontation erupted.

At one point, both sides began hurling stones at each other, the IDF said, adding that Paleostinians also launched fireworks.

"During the confrontation, Israeli civilians shot toward the Paleostinians. As a result of the confrontation, a Paleostinian was killed, four others were maimed, and a Paleostinian vehicle was found burnt," the IDF said in a statement Saturday.

One Israeli settler was maimed by stones hurled at him in the town, and he was taken by medics to the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem for further treatment, police said.

He was later arrested over suspicions he opened fire and killed Matan, but remained hospitalized with a head injury.

IDF troops, coppers, and members of the Shin Bet security agency arrived at the scene only after the deadly incident and launched an investigation.

Amid concerns of further violence, the IDF on Saturday declared the area of the deadly incident a closed military zone, and stationed a number of soldiers in it.

The office of Paleostinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh demanded that the perpetrators "not be allowed to escape punishment."
Lawyers for two settlers suspected in the killing of a Paleostinian man during a West Bank clash asserted Saturday that they had acted in self-defense after a mob attacked them and other Israelis.

They were identified Saturday night as Elisha Yered, a former front man for the far-right Otzma Yehudit party’s MK Limor Son Har-Melech, and Yehiel Indore. Indore is believed to be the person who shot 19-year-old Qusai Jamal Matan. Yered is suspected of interfering with the investigation.

A court extended the pair’s remand until Wednesday.

On Friday night, Matan was fatally shot in the neck outside the West Bank town of Burqa, close to Ramallah, on private Paleostinian land, according to Paleostinian health officials and Israeli defense sources. He was buried on Saturday. According to the PA’s official Wafa news agency, the festivities broke out after settlers attacked the village, leading residents to confront them.

The right-wing legal aid group Honenu said "dozens of Arab attackers" had on Friday targeted a Jewish shepherd and others who had come from the illegal Oz Zion outpost to help them, with the Paleostinians using rocks, clubs and fireworks.

Honenu said the main suspect — later identified as Indore — was seriously hurt after being struck in the head by a rock thrown at him, and that he had undergone head surgery and was suffering from a fractured skull and intracerebral hemorrhage — all while coppers were continuously staying next to his bed in the hospital’s intensive care department.

Yered is a resident of the illegal West Bank outpost of Migron while Indor lives in the Ofra settlement.

The Honenu statement said that after Indore was injured, "with his last drops of strength, the settler succeeded in defending himself with his personal weapon, for which he holds a license." It added that the second suspect, Yered, had helped evacuate Indore from the scene and bring him to an ambulance.

"My client acted according to the law and as is required of any gun license holder — to defend his life and the lives of other citizens," said lawyer Nati Rom.

says members open fire at Israeli forces, set off explosives in Nur Shams, close to Tulkarem.

An 18-year-old Paleostinian was rubbed out by Israeli forces during an army raid in the Nur Shams refugee camp, adjacent to the West Bank city of Tulkarem on Friday morning, Paleostinian media reported.

According to the official Paleostinian Authority news agency, Wafa, 18-year-old Mahmoud Abu Sa’an was fatally shot in the head during violent mostly peaceful confrontations in the camp.

A local wing of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad terror group said its members had opened fire on Israeli forces and detonated several bombs against army vehicles.

The so-called Tulkarem Battalion

said it mourned the death of Abu Sa’an, calling him a "heroic martyr," but did not say he was a member.
Oh. Does that mean his family doesn’t get the usual foreign donor-provided pension?
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that forces returned fire at Paleostinian button men who opened fire and hurled explosives, and other rioters throwing stones.

The IDF carried out a large raid in Nur Shams last week, during which troops neutralized bombs planted along the roads, in order to enable future raids.

According to a tally by The Times of Israel, 163 West Bank Paleostinians have been killed since the beginning of the year — most of them during festivities with security forces or while carrying out attacks.

Resistance fighters carried on their shoulders after the failure of the occupation army to arrest or assassinate pursuers, during the storming of Tulkarm camp at dawn today.
I s’pose that’s true, given the dead lad wasn’t a member. But it does seem a tad heartless to cheer about it...

SNA factions storm wedding in Sere Kaniye over marriage refusal, re-arrest 15 north of Raqqa
[NPASyria] Members of the Sultan Murad faction, affiliated with the Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), stormed a wedding on Saturday in the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), northeastern Syria.

The reason behind these arrests stemmed from the father’s refusal to arrange his daughter’s marriage to a leader within the armed faction.

A local source reported that Abu Wa’el al-Homsi, a leader in Sultan Murad, forcefully entered the wedding of Muhannad Hamadi and arrested him with the bride’s father Haj Youssef al-Remo.

The arrest, the source said, took place after both were subjected to physical assault in front of the wedding guests. These actions were taken as a reprisal for the bride’s rejection of marrying Abu Wa’el al-Homsi.

"The detainees were transferred to the Sultan Murad’s headquarters in Tel Halaf in the countryside of Sari Kaniye under the pretext of conducting a security investigation about them," the source added.

Turkish-backed factions detain 15 people in Syria’s north

[NPASyria] Military Police, affiliated with Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka Syrian National Army (SNA), arrested on Saturday 15 individuals, while they were trying to get into areas held by the Autonomous Administration of North and east Syria (AANES).

An exclusive source told North Press that two Military Police patrols, in collaboration with Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction, affiliated with the SNA, arrested 15 individuals while they were trying to cross M4 Highway, from the village of Tufaha to the village of Aiwa, north of Raqqa.

The detained people were deported from Turkey two weeks earlier, according to the source.

The Military Police transferred the detainees to Tel Abyad prison, north of Raqqa, under the pretext of a security suspicion. Later, six of them were released, while nine others remain detained, the source stated.

Tel Abyad has been under the Turkish occupation since 2019 following the so-called “Peace Spring” military operation that was launched by Turkish forces and the SNA factions.

Russia and Syria destroyed the headquarters of Jabhat al-Nusra in Idlib
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russian and Syrian military personnel in the area of the city of Idlib destroyed the headquarters of Jabhat al-Nusra (an organization whose activities are banned in Russia). This was announced at a briefing by the deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in the Arab Republic (CPVS), Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit.
Well done, guys!
He clarified that in the destroyed headquarters were those who were directly involved in organizing and carrying out sabotage and terrorist attacks against the Syrian government forces and civilians.
Even better — lotsa bodies of bad guys is a very good thing, indeed. The only thing missing is a report of lots if secondaries lighting up the sky like the Fourth of July.
According to the Rear Admiral, four attacks from Jabhat al-Nusra in the province of Aleppo were recorded in the Idlib zone in the past 24 hours alone. As a result of a guided anti-tank missile hitting a vehicle of the Syrian Armed Forces, fired by terrorists, one Syrian soldier was killed, four more were injured.

As IA Regnum reported , the former deputy head of the Russian TsPVS, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, said that Russia was concerned about the information received about the active preparation of suicide bombers for terrorist attacks against objects and patrols of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria.

Kulit called on the commanders of illegal armed groups to refrain from provocations and take the path of a peaceful settlement of the conflict. Otherwise, the Russian troops will take "the most decisive and tough measures against the militants" who are planning an attack on the Russian and Syrian military.

The report from Syrian news site Northern Press Agency:
Russian airstrikes leave wounded in de-escalation zone in Syria’s Idlib

Front) on the outskirts of the city of Idlib in northwest Syria.

Two HTS murderous Moslems were killed, and another was maimed in a mutual shelling between Syrian government force and the HTS in the countryside of Idlib, Aleppo, and Hama in the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Ottoman Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.

Unless this is the attack in question — it’s hard to say. At any rate, it looks like Russian pilots have been busy:
Three civilians killed in Russian airstrikes in Idlib

[NPASyria] Three non-combatants were killed and six others were maimed on Saturday in Russian Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s targeting the western outskirts of Idlib city, northwest Syria.

A local source told North Press that Russian fighter jets carried out six airstrikes in the afternoon, targeting several positions on the Martein-Deir Shieb road west of Idlib. The attacks killed three civilians from one family and injured six others.

Meanwhile,

specialized teams managed to rescue a woman and two young men from under the rubble of one of the targeted houses.

The injured were transported to Idlib University Hospital, while Russian fighter jets continued to hover over the area, according to the source.
