Rescue ship saves 86 migrants off Libyan coast: Charity
[AlAhram] The migrant rescue ship Ocean Viking rescued 86 people off the coast of Libya on Tuesday as their vessel foundered while trying to reach Europe, its French-based operator said.

"The rescued, mainly from Gambia
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by The Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...

, were suffering from dehydration, exhaustion and fuel burns," a front man for the charity told AFP.

He added that most of the migrants colonists were minors, trying to cross the Mediterranean on their own, without family.
...where a minor is self-defined as a male between the ages of ten and forty years, as the tests have shown.
Italian authorities have said the passengers can disembark at its port of Bari, which the charity said was still a three-day voyage away.

According to the Italian interior ministry, around 90,000 migrants colonists have arrived by sea so far this year.

The UN's International Organization for Migration estimates that 1,724 migrants colonists had disappeared trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europa

Burkina: at least 34 soldiers and army auxiliaries killed in an attack
More on this story from yesterday.
[AfricaNews] At least 31 soldiers and three army auxiliaries were killed on Monday in an attack by suspected jihadists in northern Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, the army announced on Tuesday, with security sources telling AFP that another separate attack had left dozens dead.

"A supply convoy escorted by military units, returning from Djibo", a town besieged for months by jihadists in the Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
(north), was on Monday "the target of an ambush" in Namsiguia, in the Centre-nord region, according to a Burkina Faso army statement.

"The fighting, which was particularly violent mostly peaceful, caused significant casualties, despite the vigorous response of the units," it added, referring to a "provisional toll" of 31 soldiers and three Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP, civilian army auxiliaries) killed, while "around ten elements are still being sought by reinforcements" dispatched to the scene.

According to the army, "more than forty snuffies have been neutralized".

The army did not mention in its communiqué another attack in the same region on Monday, which, according to security sources told AFP, also left "dozens dead", the majority of them VDP.

"Terrorist groups attacked the village of Noaka" in the Centre-Nord region, "mainly targeting VDP", according to one of these sources.

"We lost dozens of men in Noaka and several are maimed," said a local VDP official. "Several other fighters are still missing," he added.

According to a local resident, "it's a massacre that's taken place in Noaka", estimating that "around thirty" VDP were killed in the attack and mentioning "many maimed". "The valiant fighters, supported by the army, also inflicted a heavy loss on the assailants", he added, referring to "several cycle of violences and weapons recovered".

The local VDP leader also reported that another, smaller-scale attack had taken place on Monday in Gayeri, in the eastern Komondjari province, killing four army auxiliaries.

The population of Tanwalbougou (east) had demonstrated the same day in response to the upsurge in jihadist attacks, calling for supplies to their locality, which has been blockaded by gangs for several weeks, according to local residents.

Burkina has been caught since 2015 in a spiral of jihadist violence that began in Mali and Niger a few years earlier and has spread beyond their borders. Over the past eight years, the violence has left more than 10,000 civilians and soldiers dead, according to NGOs, and more than two million internally displaced.

Since last September, the country has been ruled by a military junta led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power following a coup d'état, the second in eight months.

Iraqi refugee sets fire to bacon-stuffed Quran pages outside Stockholm mosque
[IsraelTimes] A man set fire to several pages of the Koran outside Stockholm’s main mosque, after Swedish police granted a permit for the protest that coincided with the start of the Moslem holiday Eid al-Adha
...a major Moslem holiday, marked by animal sacrifice and ritual rioting...
The police said in its written decision that the security risks associated with the burning "were not of a nature that could justify, under current laws, a decision to reject the request."

The protest unfolds calmly.

Salwan Momika, 37, who fled from Iraq to Sweden several years ago, had asked police for permission to burn the Moslem holy book "to express my opinion about the Koran."

Ahead of the protest, Momika tells news agency TT he also wanted to highlight the importance of freedom of speech.

"This is democracy. It is in danger if they tell us we can’t do this," Momika says.

Under a heavy police presence and with around a dozen opponents shouting at him in Arabic, Momika, dressed in beige trousers and a shirt, addresses the crowd of several dozen through a megaphone.

At various times, he stomps on the Koran, put strips of bacon in it, lit a few pages on fire before slamming it shut, and kicked it like a football, while waving Swedish flags, AFP correspondents at the scene report.

Police had cordoned off an area in a park next to the mosque separating Momika and a co-protester from the crowd.
The protest also garnered heavy criticism on social media, with most users calling it a deliberate act of provocation given that it coincided with the first day of the celebration of Eid al-Adha
...a major Moslem holiday, marked by animal sacrifice and ritual rioting...
Ottoman Turkish Foreign Minsiter Hakan Fidan condemned the "despicable" act on Twitter.

"It is unacceptable to allow these actions under the pretext of freedom of expression," he said.

By providing permission for the Koran burning
...One of the basic tenets of Islam is that once a Koran has been printed it is expected to last for all time, no matter how old, ratty, and smelly other, lesser holy books may become. Should it actually become necessary to put a Koran out of its misery there is a ritual that includes extensive charivari, featuring long drawn-wailing and head bonking, ritual wife beating, and the sacrifice of dozens of women's noses and pubic lips. When the actual disposal has been completed there is a prescribed period of celebratory gun sex with the expectation of a minimum of two hundred casualties. Should actual infidels dispose of a Koran, Islamic custom calls for three weeks of rioting and a minimum of three dozen dead, which is a holdover from the days of Moloch worship....
to be carried out, Sweden is expected to face further opposition from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
in its bid to join NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
A series of demonstrations, also involving the burning of the Moslem book or for Kurdish rights, have sparked condemnation from Ankara whose support Sweden needs to join the military alliance.

Sweden and Turkey are set to meet on July 6 in Brussels, with NATO members pushing for Stockholm’s accession before the summit in Lithuania several days later.

Swedish police have recently rejected applications for demonstrations against the Koran but these have been overruled by courts, saying the decision violated freedom of speech.

Terrorist commander among 3 killed in Bajaur IBO: ISPR
Probably TTP, though there are other possibilities.
[Dawn] A terrorist commander was among three killed in an Intelligence-Based Operation (IBO) in the general area Inayat Qilla of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, the army’s media wing said on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted the IBO on the reported presence of terrorists.

It added that an intense exchange of fire took place between security forces and terrorists, resulting in the killing of the holy warriors, including their commander Shafi.

"Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the killed terrorists, who remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces as well as killing of innocent citizens," the ISPR said.

It added that the sanitisation of the area was being carried out to eliminate any snuffies found in the area.

"Locals of the area appreciated the operation and expressed their full support to eliminate the menace of terrorism," the statement concluded.

On June 20, two soldiers were martyred in a blast from an improvised bomb in the Spinwam area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North Wazoo district.

The ISPR had said that 29-year-old Sepoy Gul Rauf, a resident of Lakki Marwat, and 23-year-old Sepoy Abid Ullahm, a resident of Karak district, were martyred in the blast.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel seizes cryptocurrency said to be used to finance Hezbollah and Iran's Guards
[An Nahar] The Israeli government said that it seized millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from accounts that had sent or received funds in alleged financing schemes for a powerful arm of the Iranian military and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he issued an order to seize the cryptocurrency wallets and turn over the funds to the Israeli government.

He described the "extensive" operation as Israel's first to target Hezbollah and the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's elite Quds Force — two organizations sworn to Israel's destruction. Both have been designated by the United States and some other governments as "terrorist" organizations and locked out of the traditional global financial system.

It was a multi-agency effort, Gallant said, involving Israel's Mossad spy agency, the Israeli military intelligence office, the Israeli police and others.

Israel has previously seized cryptocurrency belonging to the paramilitary arm of Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
's Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", rulers as part of counterterrorism financing investigations.

"This is the first incident of this magnitude," Gallant said, noting that the effort took place earlier this week. "We have effectively cut off the flow of terror funds via this channel."

Iran's mission to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Israel's announcement.

Gallant alleged that Hezbollah and the Quds Force rely on virtual currency to finance their bad boy activities. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are favored for illicit transactions because they are perceived as hard to trace. Anyone in the world can create a Bitcoin account and begin receiving digital funds without providing a name or address.

Countries facing American sanctions, like Israel's regional foe Iran, have worked toward creating their own cryptocurrencies to circumvent financial restrictions.

Gallant said that Israel's seizure of the illicit funds should serve as a warning to "whoever finances terror," as Israeli authorities have developed tools and techniques that can identify those involved in so-called blockchain transactions.

17 people arrested by HTS in northern Idlib
[NPASyria] On Wednesday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) arrested 17 people, including four women, from a protest camp set up against the bully boy group near the Sarmada Roundabout in Sarmada city, northern Idlib. The protesters demanded the release of detainees held by the HTS.

A local source told North Press that Unit 106 from the HTS’ General Security Apparatus surrounded the protest camp earlier in the day. The camp was set up by refugees from the countryside of Hama who were demanding the release of their sons who were tossed into the calaboose by the group in a previous security campaign.

The source added that the campaign sparked outrage among residents over the arbitrary arrests being carried out against them. The General Security has charged the detainees with threatening civil peace and referred them to an anti-terrorism center.

On Tuesday, dozens of protesters set up a protest camp near the Sarmada Roundabout in northern Idlib, demanding the HTS release their loved ones and stop its repression, according to the same source.

Syrian, Russian strikes hit rebel-held areas
[Rudaw] Syrian and Russian Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s hit rebel bases in the northwest of the country, the defense ministry said on Wednesday, amid a recent escalation of violence.

Syria "in cooperation with friendly Russian forces, carried out precise and qualitative air and missile strikes targeting the fortified headquarters of terrorist organizations," the ministry said in a statement post by Syria’s state news agency SANA.

The statement did not specify when the strikes were carried out but it comes at a time of an uptick in violence in rebel-held areas of the past week.

It said that the operation was "in response to the repeated daily attacks" on residential areas in Hama province, and that bases containing weapons and ammunition were "completely destroyed."

The announcement comes a day after Russian airstrikes killed at least eight fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS), according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The war monitor claimed that 13 fighters and 16 civilians have been killed in Syrian and Russian strikes on rebel-held Idlib, where HTS is mainly in control, this week.

Half of Idlib province, as well as parts of Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia provinces, are the last rebel-held bastions in the country after Assad seized back swathes of territory over the course of the brutal Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011.

ISIS kills female Asayish member in eastern Syria: Monitor
[Rudaw] A female member of the internal security forces (Asayish) in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province was killed by suspected Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) button men on Tuesday, a war monitor reported.

The Asayish are a police and security force predominantly in northeast Syria (Rojava) that are affiliated to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who fought the lion’s share of the battle against ISIS and defeated the terror group in 2019.

"Two button men on a cycle of violence, who are believed to belong to ISIS, targeted a female fighter of the internal security forces ... while she was crossing the road near al-Basira city eastern of Deir Ezzor, killing her immediately," reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor.

According to the monitor, 89 operations have been carried out by ISIS in areas under control of the Kurdish administration, which have left 59 dead, including ten civilians, 44 members of security forces, and four ISIS fighters.

After their territorial defeat to a military operation led by the SDF and backed by the United States-led global coalition, ISIS snuffies have carried out hit-and-run attacks on civilians and military targets of both the Syrian regime and the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES).
