'Gov. Abbott launches statewide initiatives to combat fentanyl crisis
"Last year, over 2,000 Texans died from fentanyl poisoning."
I didn't notice.

[JustTheNews] Last year, over 2,000 Texans died from fentanyl poisoning.

Texas is launching a $10 million multimedia awareness initiative through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, following "One Pill Can Kill" campaigns launched over a year ago by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.

Texas is also distributing Naloxone/Narcan to all 254 Texas counties through the Texas Division of Emergency Management. The generic and brand versions of a nasal spray have proven to reverse opioid overdoses if administered quickly enough.

Texans can currently get Narcan at pharmacies with or without a prescription and with or without insurance. However, TDEM administering it statewide to law enforcement agencies and other entities will ensure its more widely available to officials to administer in their communities.

At a One Pill Kills Summit in Austin, Abbott was joined by over 250 advocates committed to educating Texans about the dangers of opioids, including fentanyl, which is the number one killer of American adults between the ages of 18 and 45.

Last year, over 2,000 Texans died from fentanyl poisoning. According to provisional data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas has experienced a 500% increase in fentanyl-related deaths since 2019. Through the state's border security initiative, Operation Lone Star, Texas law enforcement officers alone have seized over 380 million lethal doses of fentanyl since March 2021 – more than enough to kill everyone in the United States, according to the governor's office.

The DEA and state and local law enforcement agencies have reported that fentanyl and fentanyl precursors are being brought in through the southern border by Mexican cartel operatives and gangs. Fake prescription pills and other narcotics are laced with fentanyl in Mexico using precursors shipped to Mexico from China, law enforcement officers have explained. The leaders of Mexico and China deny these claims despite the unprecedented volume of fentanyl and other drugs pouring through the southern border.

Gov. Abbott has more than once called on the president to stop the fentanyl crisis by closing the border. He's also called on him to designate cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. He's yet to receive a response.

"Thanks to President Joe Biden and his reckless open border policies, the historic levels of fentanyl flooding across our border remains the single deadliest drug threat Texas and our nation have ever seen," Gov. Abbott said at the summit. "With five Texans losing their lives every day to this clandestine killer, I launched our statewide 'One Pill Kills' campaign last fall to combat the growing fentanyl crisis wreaking havoc on innocent Texans and communities across our state."

Joining Abbott at the summit were Texas Against Fentanyl Founder Stefanie Turner, state Rep. Tom Oliverson, R-Houston, HHSC Executive Commissioner Cecile Young, TDEM Chief Nim Kidd, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw, Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath, Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Dr. Jennifer Shuford, National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson, Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn, Zapata County Sheriff Ray Del Bosque, families who have lost loved ones to fentanyl, and other state officials and anti-drug advocates.

Last September, Gov. Abbott directed state agencies to identify ways to educate Texans about the fentanyl crisis. Since then, HHSC has partnered with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to create a multimedia initiative to educate the public about the dangers of fentanyl and how to use Narcan. The campaign will focus on reaching Texas youth, parents, adults, and educators, including using billboards, online and social media advertisements, Spanish radio announcements, and other initiatives.

HHSC Executive Commissioner Young said, "All Texans should understand fentanyl risks and talk with their loved ones about its dangers and the life-saving power of NARCAN. Through this $10 million multimedia operation, HHSC is helping Texas lead the fight against the fentanyl crisis plaguing our state and nation."

The statewide distribution of Narcan will be partially funded by a landmark opioid settlement Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton negotiated with multiple pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies. As of January, Texas secured nearly $3 billion in settlement money.

TDEM will distribute the first 20,000 units of Narcan to all 254 county sheriffs' offices. Sheriffs may request their initial allotment through the State of Texas Assistance Request (STAR) process.

Several bills have been filed in the Texas legislature to increase penalties for fentanyl-related crimes, including making fentanyl poisoning a murder charge in Texas.

The DEA's One Pill Can Kill website explains how to identify fake prescription pills as well as "rainbow fentanyl," pills that look like candy. Two milligrams is considered a lethal dose of fentanyl. Fake prescription pills laced with fentanyl often contain more than two milligrams, which is why the DEA has been warning "one pill can kill."

The DEA has published several public safety alerts about the dangers of fentanyl. Florida has also published resources through its Dose of Reality, One Pill Can Kill website. Its Fast Facts on Fentanyl toolkit includes a DEA Emoji Drug Code to educate parents about how dealers are selling illicit drugs targeting minors through social media apps.

Afghanistan
Source: At Least One of the 3 Britons Detained is Ex-Military
[ToloNews] One of the three British detainees in Afghanistan has been identified as former UK soldier, a security source told TOLOnews.

According to the source, this detainee has also spent his military mission in the southern province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
—one the severe conflict-affected provinces of Afghanistan.

The soldier has come to Afghanistan under the name of a journalist, the source said.

"If they come here illegally, or violated the laws of Afghanistan or worked as spy for other countries, it is considered a crime and any country has the right to detain such foreign nationals and introduce them to the relevant organizations," said Sarwar Niazai, a military analyst.

The source said that the detainees held illegal weapons.

Kevin Cornwell, 53, and another British national were detained on January 11, 2023, by the Islamic Emirate in Kabul.

Earlier, British media reported that three Britons are being held by the Islamic Emirate.

Iraq
Iraqi militias escalate rhetoric against US, threatening more attacks
[Shafaq News] A new wave of hostility against the US, including threats to attack its facilities in Iraq, has resurfaced recently coinciding with drone attacks on US troops in Syria. A number of factors have prompted this escalation, including Washington's recurring visits and uptick in its diplomatic activity in Baghdad.

With the formation of the new government in Iraq late last year, Iraqi militias' hostility against the United States appeared to be waning. Attacks on the convoys of the US and other coalition members stopped, along with anti-American protests and "death to US" slogans. The regular statements of militia leaders against the US suddenly ended.

It seemed that with the presence of militias’ political wings in the new government, an opportunity for reducing the tension had finally appeared.

Police de-escalate tensions between Saraya al-Salam and Hezbollah Brigades
[Shafaq News] In the early hours of Sunday morning, the capital city of Baghdad witnessed a massive deployment of fighters belonging to the military wing of the Sadrist Movement, known as "Saraya al-Salam."

They paraded with heavy and medium weapons in large convoys, following rising tensions between them and the Hezbollah Brigades.

According to a source who spoke to the Shafaq News Agency, the tension arose due to disputes over a piece of land located in the Dora area south of the capital.

The source added that a force from Saraya al-Salam moved from the city of Sh'ula to the Dora area, carrying various weapons. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the situation is currently under control after the arrival of a unit of the Federal Police, who managed to calm the situation.

#5  "But when ChatGPT starts encouraging terrorism, who will there be to prosecute?"

He who trains the Jiahidi Bot should win the drone strike.

Where are the physical locations of the Jiahidi Bots API Endpoints? You cant have cloud w/o API. I am fairly sure you can tell server side API calls from client side API calls. Server side linked API infrastructure should all be targeted and obliterated.

FIFA slaps Indonesia with financial sanction after U-20 World Cup fiasco
[BenarNews] Indonesia avoided a harsh penalty from FIFA after the world football governing body stripped it of hosting rights for the Under-20 World Cup 2023 amid a controversy over Israel’s participation, the national football chief said.

FIFA decided to impose a sanction that freezes the funding for the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) instead of banning Indonesia for a second time in eight years, the organization’s chairman, Erick Thohir, announced from La Belle France late Thursday.

"I can only say, thanks to the grace of God and the prayers of all Indonesians, especially soccer fans, Indonesia managed to avoid a heavy sanction of isolation from world football," he said in a statement posted on the association’s website after meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Gay Paree.

"FIFA only imposed administrative sanctions in the form of freezing FIFA Forward funds for PSSI’s operational needs. It will be reviewed again after FIFA studies Indonesia’s big football development strategy," he added.

Infantino issued the decision on freezing the funds after Erick briefed FIFA about Indonesia’s strategic plan for football development and transformation.

Through the latest punishment, Erick said, the world football body showed Indonesia "a yellow card, instead of a red card."

In 2015, FIFA suspended Indonesia’s membership and banned its national and club teams from international competitions for a year after the sports ministry froze the soccer federation over a dispute involving two teams with dual ownership or management issues.

To support its member national associations in their football activities, FIFA provides up to U.S. $5 million each for operational costs such as staff salaries, administration and governance every four years under the Forward 3.0 launched this year.

Additionally, each member association can receive up to $3 million for specific football projects that align with long-term development goals. FIFA also offers extra assistance of up to $1.2 million each for the most needy member associations to help them with travel and accommodation expenses for their national teams and football equipment.

The move came after some Indonesian politicians and Moslem groups spoke out against the participation of the Israeli team. Those refusing to host Israel included the governors of Bali and Central Java, where some of the tournament’s matches were scheduled to be held.

The decision outraged Indonesian football fans and players, who had been preparing for the event for years. Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and has been a vocal supporter of the Paleostinian cause.

Erick said FIFA would review the new sanction after assessing Indonesia’s strategic plan and would provide necessary assistance.

He also said that Indonesia would still be able to compete in the Southeast Asian Games next month, which is not on FIFA’s official calendar.

Erick is one of Indonesia’s richest men. He is the former owner of the Italian football club Inter Milan and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

FIFA has been working with Indonesia to improve its football infrastructure and management since the deadly stadium crush in Malang in October 2022 that killed 135 people. FIFA also agreed to assign officials to monitor its program in Indonesia.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
a new sports-related controversy emerged this week after Bali’s governor, I Wayan Koster, said he also opposed the participation of Israeli athletes at the World Beach Games scheduled for August on the island.

Koster’s remarks drew criticism from the head of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, who called on the central government to sit together to find a solution.

Mikati defends govt. response to south flare-up, slams FPM
[An Nahar] Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has defended his government’s response to the latest cross-border escalation with Israel, which was the most serious flare-up since the 2006 war.

"From the very first moment of the incidents in the South, we carried out the necessary contacts with all the relevant parties and the influential international sides away from the spotlight, because such matters cannot be addressed through a furor in the media or statements," Mikati said.

"I also asked the Foreign Ministry to act simultaneously and conduct the necessary contacts," the PM added.

"It turned out from the preliminary investigations carried out by the army that those who fired the rockets were not organized groups but rather non-Lebanese elements, and that the issue was a response to the Israeli aggression against the Paleostinian territories and the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip," Mikati revealed.

Separately, the premier lamented that "from the very first day the government assumed responsibility after the vacancy in the presidential post, it turned out that there was a political group that did not want this government to work," apparently referring to the Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
which has been boycotting the caretaker cabinet sessions.

"This group is carrying out a belated vengeance against the Taif Accord and it is seeking to destroy it with all means," Mikati decried.

West warns that Iran plans to attack Israeli-owned vessels to avenge advisers killed in Syria
[Shafaq News] The IRGC’s Aerospace Force is gearing up to launch drone attacks on ships sailing through the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, according to the report, which cited two anonymous senior Western intelligence officials.

An Iranian political strategist linked to the IRGC told the newspaper the planned attacks were in retaliation for the strikes in Syria.

The report came as the US military announced it had dispatched the USS Florida, a nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine to the Middle East to "help ensure regional maritime security and stability." The show of force comes amid heightened tensions with Iran, which continues to harass shipping and attack oil tankers in the area, including several owned by Israelis.
