Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief February 6, 2023
[AfghaniDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • DIPLOMATIC EXODUS – A major US news agency said that sources had confirmed Saudi Arabian diplomats had left Kabul and its embassy had been closed. Taliban spokesman, Zabiullha Mujahid said that the departure was only for training and that they would return soon. Few appear to believe this assertion and attribute the departure to an incident where female embassy employees were barred from entering the chancellery grounds by Taliban guards. An additional unconfirmed report of potential security threats against the foreign diplomatic personnel and facilities has also been circulated by sources and the one directed against the Saudi Arabian embassy was said to involve an ISIS-K car bomb plot. Finally, there have been unsubstantiated rumors that UAE and Qatari diplomatic personnel have departed Kabul. We have verified these rumors to be false. However, security in the embassy district has increased noticeably.

  • WOMEN PROTESTORS MOVEMENT OF AFGHANISTAN PUBLISH LETTER TO NOBEL COMMITTEE – Several prominent leaders in the women’s movement signed the note asking for the removal of Mahbooba Siraj from consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize. They claim she is a Taliban collaborator and has actively acted against their movement.

  • US EXTENDS EMERGENCY EXECUTIVE ORDER FOR AFGHANISTAN – President Biden extended his order for a full year in anticipation of a deepening humanitarian and economic crisis in the country. A legal challenge remains for roughly half of the estimated $7 billion in assets that have been frozen and the executive order is expected to grant additional time to the plaintiffs seeking compensation for the loss of their loved ones in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

  • PERVEZ MUSHARRAF DIES AT AGE 79 – The former Pakistani leader died in Dubai after suffering from a protracted illness. The polarizing leader who took power in the late 90s when he instigated a coup is both revered and reviled by Pakistani citizens and many in Afghanistan point their fingers at him for initially supporting the Taliban and then waging war against them.

  • PAKISTAN MAY REVIEW POLICIES TOWARDS AFGHAN REFUGEES – A police official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province said a review would be undertaken to decide on a new policy to deal with Afghan Refugees currently residing in Pakistan. The official was calling for the deportation of all those who had arrived without passports or, who had overstayed their visas. It is not clear if the federal government will take this up while the IMF negotiations are ongoing.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Parwan: An NRF attack on a Taliban checkpoint in Jabal-al-Sraj resulted in the deaths of 6 Taliban security force members. No NRF casualties were reported.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • AN AFGHAN RAILWAYS DELEGATION HEADED TO UZBEKISTAN – The Taliban will dispatch a delegation to Uzbekistan to discuss the reopening of the Hairatan-Mazar-i-Sharif line. While some goods have been shifted to the still-open Torghondi line, the capacity is considered insufficient to handle both export and imports. Several traders disposed of their foodstuffs on the Afghan side of the border yesterday claiming their goods had spoiled.

  • ANTI-RAPE PROTEST PLANNED IN ISLAMABAD – After reports of a woman being raped at gunpoint near the F-9 Park, several groups have called for a protest to take place at the site at 1700hrs local time. They have stated they intend to block the roads in an effort to call attention to the victims of rape in Pakistan. A recent report suggested that 40% of women in Pakistan are victims of sexual violence. While the protest is not expected to become violent, it will likely see elevated levels of police in the area due to its proximity to downtown. At-risk Afghans are advised to avoid the area.

  • ISIS-K THREAT LINGERS IN KABUL – With the departure of the Saudi Arabian diplomatic staff over a possible security threat posed by ISIS-K in Kabul, there remains a threat that the suspected terror cell may choose another target. ISIS-K has been quiet in recent weeks and with the continued presence of beefed-up Taliban security in both the diplomatic quarter and the neighborhoods where diplomatic personnel reside, we believe caution would be wise for the coming week and that at-risk Afghans avoid these areas if at all possible.

Somali military denies vacating from town in Middle Shabelle region
[ShabelleMedia] Somali military has denied reports that the army forces, along with locals have withdrawn from a key town in Middle Shabelle region.

Speaking to Shabelle radio, Abshir Ahmed Ali, an army officer, denied rumors circulating on social media regarding their withdrawal from Runir-God, a town that was recently captured from al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
— an al Qaeda — linked group.

Runir-God, a town in Middle Shabelle region that lies some 264 km away from the capital Mogadishu.

"We are still in the town. We did not vacate from Runir-God town. Our troops will continue hunting al-Shabaab and liberating more towns from the bad boys", Ali added.

The al Qaeda-linked group lost key towns in the region to the recent military operation by Somali national army backed by Ma’wisley, a self-styled militia group.

Being driven from key towns in south and central Somalia, the al-Shabaab group still hold large swaths in rural areas and carry out deadly attack in the capital Mogadishu and elsewhere.

Security forces with armoured vehicles were seen patrolling all the neighbourhoods in the town, local residents told Shabelle radio on the phone.

The officials added that they would continue their operations until the security of the city is tightened.

bully boyz between Jana Cabdalle and Afmadow towns, local media reported, just days after a state wide crackdown against the bully boyz was reported by authorities in the Western part of Somalia.

The federal troops with assistance from the Jubaland regional soldiers killed four bully boyz between the two towns, who are believed to be senior al-Shabaab commanders. The troops displayed two bodies; a spokesperson claimed they were preparing burial for the other two not captured by the camera.

In recent weeks, the bully boyz have been reportedly leaving several towns whenever they sense planned operation by the multi-agency teams. The teams have managed to reinstate civilian rule in several towns which President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud wants guarded with assistance from the international community.

Speaking at police pass-out parade on Saturday, Jubaland state President Ahmed Islam Mohammed Madobe said operations will begin soon to liberate Bu'ale, AlShabaab's headquarters in the Middle Juba region, which is entirely under the Death Eaters' control for a number of years on.

Last week, leaders from frontline countries pledged to assist Somalia completely crush the al-Shabaab extortionists who have been struggling to expand th.eir territory. President William Ruto of Kenya, Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti and Æthiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attended the conference in Mogadishu.

At least nine people killed in attack on refugee in Niger
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] At least nine people were killed last Wednesday in an attack led by "heavily armed terrorists" on a Malian refugee camp in western Niger, neighboring Mali.

French Press Agency on Saturday quoted a local official as saying "the attack resulted in nine deaths, one person was maimed, and six people are missing."

He added that the attack targeted a Malian refugee camp near a town located 65 kilometers northwest of Tilea, in the Tahoua region on the border with Mali, on the evening of February 1.

"The heavily armed gunnies arrived on about ten cycle of violences, stormed the camp and opened fire before fleeing to Mali," the official said.

Militant NY couple get a combined 20 yrs in prison for providing material support to Islamic State terrorists
[BIZPACREVIEW] A radical, militant husband and wife in New York have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced to a combined 20 years in prison for providing material support to Islamic State terrorists after falling for an undercover law enforcement officer posing as a terrorism sympathizer.

Prosecutors assert that the husband, who is from New York, told the undercover cop that he wanted to carry out a terror attack in the United States. He was considering hitting the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or a university in New York State where he frequently saw Reserve Officer Training Corps or ROTC cadets, according to Fox News.

The husband is James Bradley, 21, aka Abdullah, of the Bronx. He was sentenced to 11 years behind bars on Thursday in a Manhattan federal court. His wife, Arwa Muthana, 30, comes from Hoover, Alabama. She was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison by Judge Paul A. Engelmayer.

Both pleaded guilty last September. They freely admitted they were Islamic State supporters who sought to travel to the Middle East to fight for the terrorist organization. They were married in an Islamic marriage ceremony in January 2021, according to authorities.

The radicalized couple was arrested on the gangplank at Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal in New Jersey on March 31, 2021. Authorities believe they were planning on boarding a cargo ship that an undercover officer had told them was heading to Yemen.

NEW YORK: A Bronx couple who expressed interest in fighting for ISIS were arrested at a NJ port as they attempted to board a cargo ship that would of taken them to Yemen. They were ordered held without bail.

— KolHaolam (@KolHaolam) April 5, 2021

The husband wanted to travel to Yemen via the cargo ship because he believed he was on a terrorist watch list, according to prosecutors.

The couple kept themselves busy before they were busted for distributing extremist online content, including images of ISIS fighters, Osama bin Laden and terrorist attacks.

According to the Department of Justice:

“Bradley also distributed to UC-1 videos of ISIS fighters, a 2020 stabbing attack against a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, and extremists shooting a uniformed soldier. Content on Muthana’s cellphone, which was searched pursuant to a court-authorized search warrant, included images of an ISIS flag with Arabic writing, ISIS propaganda, firearms, quotations of the deceased former al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula member Anwar al-Awlaki, and a video showing an individual in prisoner garb being chained and then burned alive.”

Muthana informed investigators that she was more than willing to fight and kill Americans for God, according to prosecutors.

Her attorneys threw the sympathy card, claiming that she should only get time served because she was a woman with “no passport, little money, and no real plan.” They claimed her actions were the result of an “abused and traumatized young woman who was trying to get as far away from home as possible.” The judge was not moved and threw the book at her.
Via MSN, al.com adds this fascinating little fact:
Muthana is the sister of Hoda Muthana, a Hoover woman who left her family to join ISIS in 2014.
You will recall, dear Reader, that Hoda Muthana is the New Jersey-born daughter of a former Yemeni ambassador to the U.S. She went to Syria to join ISIS and in short order was twice widowed and once divorced, which how she ended up a single mother of one in one of the SDF’s ISIS prison camps, trying hard to persuade America to bring her and the poor kid “home”. President Obama’s administration stripped of her American citizenship, claiming she had no birthright because her father was still an ambassador at the time of her birth — I wonder if our current beloved mini-Obama president will do the same to Arwa, who is two years older?
Separately, interesting statistics from one of the articles listed below:
A 2015 study of 59 ISIS supporters found that the average U.S.-born ISIS supporter is a 26-year-old male who has discussed ISIS on social media and is ethnically or racially diverse.

The study, conducted by the Center of National Security at Fordham Law, found that a third of the ISIS supporters had converted to Islam and 81 percent had expressed support for ISIS on social media. But very few were of Middle Eastern or Arab descent.

Seven injured in two Quetta attacks
[Dawn] Seven people were maimed in two terrorist attacks, one of them said to be a suicide kaboom, on Sunday.

The first incident took place near the Police Lines on Gulistan Road and the other on Mano Jan Road.

Five people, including an office-bearer of the Civil Secretariat Staff Association, suffered injuries in the first attack.

According to police officials, the blast occurred near a bridge.

There was no official word about the nature of the blast, but eyewitness accounts claimed it was a suicide kaboom.

Police collected the ’bomber’s remains’ from the scene of the earth-shattering kaboom, they claimed.

The injured were identified as Qaim Khan Kakar, general secretary of the Civil Secretariat Staff Association, Mohammad Usman, Fazal Mohammad, Mohammad Anwar and Thomas.

The outlawed TTP later grabbed credit for the blast, saying that it was a suicide kaboom.

In the other incident, a woman and her child were maimed when unknown persons riding cycle of violences hurled a grenade into the house of Nazeer Ahmed on Mano Jan Road. The grenade went kaboom! in the courtyard.

The wife and son of Nazeer Ahmed were maimed in the grenade blast. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital’s trauma centre.

The attack took place at the time when Quetta Gladiators and Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

On Jan 30, a jacket wallah targeted a mosque in Peshawar’s Police Lines, resulting in the death of over 84 people, according to figures released by the city police.

The outlawed TTP had initially grabbed credit for the attack. It later distanced itself from it but sources earlier indicated that it might have been the handiwork of some local faction of the banned group. January was the deadliest month since 2018, in which 134 people bit the dust — a 139 per cent spike — and 254 received injuries in at least 44 krazed killer attacks across the country.

Islamic Jihad Vows to Keep up Resistance as Israeli Occupation Arrests Sheikh Khader Adnan
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
Paleostinian resistance movement stressed on Sunday that arrests which targeted one of its senior members Sheikh Khader Adnan and other Paleostinians is a desperate attempt aimed at undermining the firm will of the Paleostinian people.

In overnight raids, Israeli forces detained Khader Adnan in his hometown village of Arrabeh, southwest of Jenin, Khaled Ghawadreh in the nearby village of Bir al-Basha, Ibrahim Zubeidi in al-Jalazoun refugee camp, north of Ramalllah and other four Paleostinians, said the Paleostinian Prisoner’s Media Office, a group that represents Paleostinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Arresting Adnan, Ghawadreh and other "reflects the extent of confusion and pressure practiced on the Fascist Israeli government due to the rise of acts of resistance across the occupied West Bank," the Islamic Jihad statement read.

The Paleostinian group vowed, meanwhile, to keep up the resistance against the Israeli occupation.

"Despite the brutal raids, the occupation won’t be able to put out the spark of the resistance," the statement added.

Adnan, 44, has been arrested several times in recent years and served several prison sentences in connection with his work with the Islamic Jihad. He has also gone on hunger strike several times over his punitive detention.
The Times of Israel adds:
During an IDF raid in the nearby village of Bir al-Basha, Palestinians opened fire at forces from a passing vehicle, the military said, adding that the soldiers returned fire at the car.

No Israeli soldiers were hurt during the overnight raids.

Also overnight, Israeli authorities handed over the body of a teenager killed by police in the Shuafat refugee camp last month. On January 25, Salah Muhammad Ali, 17, was shot while aiming a fake gun at officers.
There is a lesson here — something about not taking a toy gun to a real gunfight, perhaps...

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran hiring crime gangs to assassinate dissidents in UK, West
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
is hiring crime gangs to murder dissidents abroad in the United Kingdom and other Western countries, the Times reported on Sunday citing security officials.

Security personnel are reportedly aware of Iranian spies attempting to enlist the assistance of organized crime organizations in targeting those who are against the regime in the UK.

This comes after recent statements by the head of MI5 indicating that Iran attempted to kidnap or assassinate UK residents on ten separate occasions in 2022.
A busy schedule of murder and mayhem, or attempted anyway.
Counterterrorism police have warned London-based dissidents about Iran’s recent tactics, as the regime tries to suppress widespread human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
protests sparked by the death of a young Kurdish Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody last September.

The Iranian intelligence agency is believed to be forming closer connections with criminal organizations as sanctions and increased scrutiny by security services make it more difficult for them to operate their agents and assets in Britannia and other western countries, the Times reported, adding that the use of hired "muscle" to carry out these liquidations could allow Tehran to deny involvement as it seeks to maintain diplomatic ties with the West.

Iran’s tactic of using criminals in "murder-for-hire" plots has been at the center of an American case involving an Iranian-born US journalist and women’s rights activist muppet Masih Alinejad, who once studied in the UK.

US authorities discovered one of the suspects near the victim’s New York home with an AK-47-style rifle and charged three members of a European gang with the attempted liquidation of Alinejad. The gang member who was found near her home allegedly acted on orders from Iran through an associate in the Czech Republic.
