Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 26, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • NEW HOUSE SEARCHES IN KABUL – Taliban security forces conducted house-to-house searches in the Makrorian neighborhood. While no information was provided about what spurred the searches, a source in the Police said the operation was launched to try and interdict an ISIS-K cell that was rumored to be staying in the area. Other sources said the security forces were tipped off about a possible weapons cache. There were no reports of arrests and many of those whose homes were searched said the Taliban security forces were more respectful and less threatening than in past operations. If information becomes available, we will report it.

  • PAKISTAN AND RUSSIA COOPERATING ON THE TALIBAN PROBLEM – Pakistan and Russia appear to have adopted a pragmatic approach to dealing with the Taliban. Diplomats from both countries held discussions in Pakistan to

  • FOREIGN AID NOT NEEDED ACCORDING TO TALIBAN SPOKESMAN – In another bizarre claim, the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid posted statements on his Twitter account that rejected a recent report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The report suggested that Afghanistan could collapse under economic strain without humanitarian and economic aid. It is unlikely such sentiments are universally shared among the citizens of Afghanistan.

  • “The Islamic Emirate has deep roots, it is not a system that relies on foreign aid to collapse due to economic problems…” Zabihullah Mujahid, IEA Spokesman

  • CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST FORMER AFGHAN SOLDIER WHO WAS DETAINED CROSSING THE US/MEXICO BORDER – In a case that drew fierce criticism from all political sectors in the United States, Abdul Wasi Safi, had charges against him dismissed after lawmakers and US veterans groups had beseeched law enforcement and justice officials to halt efforts to prosecute him for entering the US illegally.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kapisa: An NRF operation in Kohistan in the early morning hours on Wednesday is said to have resulted in the deaths of 3 Talibs. Two others were injured. 2 NRF fighters were reportedly injured in the action as well. The raid targeted the Taliban compound near the Khwaja-ha Bridge. This area continues to be a hotly contested region between the Taliban and Resistance forces.

NEXT 24 HOURS
ISLAMABAD - RAWALPINDI SECURITY CHECKS TO BEGIN – Possibly in a pre-coordinated move to coincide with the arrest of the inflammatory PTI party leader, Pakistani security forces will man all the security checkpoints in Islamabad and Rawalpindi starting today. Afghans in Pakistan are likely to see a sizable police/military presence on the streets and may face increased scrutiny as they move around the cities.

Police in Mogadishu launch house-to-house search operation after shelling
[ShabelleMedia] The commissioner of Hamarweyne said that they have started a house-to-house search operation after mortars hit the district in Mogadishu yesterday.

The DC said that they are arresting people who keep weapons and explosives in their homes, saying that it is unacceptable that residents are harassed with bombs every day.

He added that a five-year-old boy was injured in yesterday’s mortar attack. This matter which he said is regrettable and cannot be tolerated continues every day.

The security agencies are taking action against anyone who hides al-Shabaab

Al-Shabaab fires mortars towards Mahas town, central Somalia
[ShabelleMedia] al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
has fired several mortar rounds towards a government-controlled town in central Somalia as SNA and locals continue to make gains in the current war.

The residents reported at least five mortar shells landed outside Mahad town, Hiran region with no casualties as of now. The shelling took place on Tuesday night at around 7:00 PM.

Speaking to Radio Shabelle, the deputy DC of Mahad said the SNA forces with the help of community fighters launched a security launched security operation after the attack.

Al-Shabaab said it was responsible for the mortar shelling which came a few hours after a similar attack happened in Mogadishu on Tuesday, targeting the Villa Somalia complex.

Mahas is one of the areas that witnessed frequent attacks by al-Shabaab in recent months as the government wages a massive war against the group in Galmudug

and HirShabelle states.

The situation of the town was calm on Wednesday morning and the businesses and transport were up and running following the al-Shabaab mortar shelling, per the DC.

Human Rights Ministry condemns Saudi airstrikes on Hodeidah
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] The Ministry of Human Rights strongly condemns the crime committed by the Saudi-led aggression aircraft in the Al-Sharja area of Al-Jarrahi District in Hodeidah province, which left three children dead and a number of wounded.

The Ministry of Human Rights strongly condemns the crime committed by the Saudi-led aggression aircraft in the Al-Sharja area of Al-Jarrahi District in Hodeidah province, which left three children dead and a number of wounded.

In a statement, the Ministry of Human Rights also denounced the continuation of the killings and violations committed by the Saudi regime against Yemenis in the border regions.

“Hardly a day passes without the Saudi regime’s army committing a new crime against defenseless Yemenis on the borderlands, as well as African migrants, whether by direct sniping or bombing with medium and heavy weapons on civilians and populated neighborhoods,” the statement said.

“Despite the escalating death toll, rural hospitals filled with hundreds of them, and the continuous violations in Hodeidah, the latest of which was a crime on Tuesday, and in light of the repeated calls made by government agencies and local organizations to stop Saudi crime, the world turns a blind eye to the crimes of the Saudi regime,” the statement added.

“The Saudi regime persists in committing crimes in cold blood, deepening in the destruction of lives and bloodshed, reassured by the absence of international justice to condemn and hold it accountable, and taking advantage of the state of silence, inaction, and international and UN complicity, whose hypocrisy and duplicity exceeded the limits.”

The Ministry of Human Rights renewed the appeal to the global human conscience, organizations and the free people of the world to stand in solidarity with the grievances of the Yemenis, and what they are exposed to for the eighth year in a row from constant bombing, siege and killing.

It held the US and Britain responsible for these crimes due to their giving the Saudi regime international cover and support to continue committing more crimes.

The ministry demanded the formation of impartial international commissions to investigate all crimes, and to bring the perpetrators to international justice.

Spain probes 'terror' motive after church attack kills 1
[DW] At least one person was killed and another severely injured in a stabbing in southern Spain's Algeciras. The country's national court is investigating the case as a possible terror attack.

At least one person was killed and another was severely injured by a man wielding a bladed weapon in southern Spain on Wednesday, officials said.

El Mundo newspaper reported that at least four people were maimed.

Police said the suspect was arrested.

Spain's National Court said a judge was investigating the stabbing as a possible terror attack.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE STABBINGS
An Interior Ministry statement said, "Just after 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) this evening, a man entered the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, where, armed with a machete, he attacked the priest, leaving him seriously maimed."

"Subsequently, he entered the church of Nuestra Senora de La Palma in which, after causing damages, he attacked the verger. The verger managed to get out of the church but was caught by the attacker outside and sustained mortal injuries," the statement added.

The two churches are around 300 meters (1,000 feet) apart.

Two people were killed and several others wounded in a knife attack on a regional train in northern Germany
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Two people were killed and several others maimed in a knife attack on a regional train in northern Germany Wednesday, police said, announcing that the alleged assailant had been captured.

The stabbings occurred on a train traveling between the cities of Hamburg and Kiel, a front man for the federal police force said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the railway station in the town of Brokstedt.

It was not immediately clear how many people had been injured or how serious their condition was. Media reports cited around five maimed.

Regional Interior Minister Sabine Suetterlin-Waack said she was "shocked" by the attack and that her "thoughts were with the families and loved ones of the victims."

She added that federal and state police were "working closely together" to determine a motive.

Germany’s national rail company said some trains on the line between Hamburg and Kiel had been canceled to allow police to conduct their investigation.

Germany has been hit in recent years by several deadly knife attacks, some carried out by holy warriors and others by people suffering from serious psychological problems. A German court in December sentenced a Syrian-born man to 14 years in prison for an holy warrior knife attack on a train in which he injured four passengers. Last year a German court committed a Somali man to a psychiatric hospital after he stabbed three people to death in the southern city of Wuerzburg in 2021.
Deutsche Welle adds:
Reports on the young man's age varied slightly in the hours following the attack. But police said a 33-year-old suspect had been taken to hospital while under arrest to treat minor injuries.

Three of those maimed were seriously hurt, four suffered minor injuries.

WHAT ELSE DO WE KNOW SO FAR?
Police said the attack took place as the train was approaching Brokstedt, a small community of around 2,000 people north of Hamburg. A suspect was arrested when the train reached Brokstedt station. Multiple travelers had called the emergency services from the train.

Police later said that three passengers had eventually managed to restrain the suspected attacker on board, and that police arrived at the scene with him under their control.

According to police, further details remained elusive around two hours after the attack. Neither suspected motives or reasons for the attacker's actions, nor the condition of those injured was entirely clear.

Police said the suspect was not thought to have been on any krazed killer watch lists, based on preliminary checks.

The dpa news agency also reported, but this time citing security sources speaking off the record, that the man was exhibiting signs of a pyschiatric illness.
From the Daily Mail:
A passenger said people in his train carriage panicked when three hysterical girls ran into their carriage and screamed that the attacker had stabbed people further down the train.

The attacker is believed to have fled the train once it stopped at the station and continued to stab people on the platform before being tackled by police officers, reports Bild.

The 33-year-old knifeman has not been identified but he is believed to be a Palestinian refugee from Gaza.

He is also in hospital receiving treatment under police guard after he reportedly stabbed himself amid his attack on fellow passengers. The suspect reportedly had a temporary residence permit with him during the attack.
And from Breitbart:
Several deaths and further injuries were reported on a German regional railway service, allegedly at the hand of a Syrian migrant, local media claimed on Wednesday afternoon.

Two people are known dead and “several” people are injured after a stabbing attack on a regional commuter train travelling between Hamburg and Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein. The knifeman is under police guard in hospital following the attack, having reportedly turned the knife on himself in the attack which took place around 3pm local time (0900 EST).

Several ambulances and a medical helicopter attended the victims aboard the train once it stopped at Brokstedt, which has now been closed to allow the emergency services to work.

According to the Bild, Europe’s biggest circulation newspaper, and their own sources the attacker was Syrian in origin but little more could be instantly said about him because paper documents he had on his person at the time of his arrest were so blood-stained they could not be read.

Deutsche Welle reports “further details” about the knifeman are still not known two hours after the attack and no motives are known.
The Times of Israel confuses things further:
The interior minister of Schleswig-Holstein state, Sabine Suetterlin-Waack told dpa that the attacker was a stateless 33-year-old Palestinian man.

Spanish police arrest 74-year-old man over letter bombs sent to PM, embassies

Spanish police on Wednesday arrested a 74-year-old man suspected of sending parcel-bombs in November and December to targets including the Ukrainian and US embassies and the prime minister’s office, the interior ministry said.

The man was detained in the northern town of Miranda de Ebro, and police searched his home.

The suspect is a retired Spanish citizen with the initials P.G.P. who is tech-savvy and very active on social networks, the ministry said.

"Although it is presumed that the detainee made and sent the bombs by himself, police do not rule out the participation or influence of other persons in the events," it added in a statement.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska declined to comment on reports that a Russian group could be behind the attacks.

"We are working on all possibilities," Grande-Marlaska told news hounds from Vitoria. "The investigation is very advanced and we can really be very satisfied."

Armed officers kept people away the low-rise cinder-block building housing the man’s third-floor apartment in a blue-collar neighborhood.

A video provided by the interior ministry showed officers and a sniffer dog searching a silver Peugeot car parked outside as forensic specialists took photographs. Police also appeared to gain access to a lock-up garage.

Witnesses said the suspect remained inside the house as the searches were conducted.

The man used to work for the town hall of the Basque capital Vitoria-Gasteiz before retiring in 2013, a city spokesperson said. Miranda de Ebro is 35 kilometers (22 miles) southeast of Vitoria.

A total of six parcels with explosives were sent between November 24 and December 2. In addition to the two embassies and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s office, they were addressed to the defense ministry, an air force base and a weapons manufacturer.

Most were defused, although an employee at the Ukrainian embassy was slightly injured when one ignited.

Investigators have concluded that all six parcels were sent from the city of Burgos, the ministry said.

A source close to the inquiry had told Rooters in early December that all the parcels had been mailed from Valladolid, a two-hour drive from Miranda del Ebro.

The New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported on Sunday that Sherlocks had focused on the Russian Imperial Movement, a group with ties to Spanish far-right organizations that was believed to be linked to Russian intelligence.

Spanish officials have declined to comment on the report, while a senior judicial source denied having knowledge of such a line of investigation.

The suspect is due to appear before the High Court on Friday, a court source said.

From Stanford University’s Center For International Security And Cooperation, courtesy of Omeating Sinatra4388 in comments yesterday:
The Russian Imperial Movement (RIM) is an extreme-right, white supremacist militant organization based in St. Petersburg, Russia. Founded in 2002, the group promotes ethnic Russian nationalism, advocates the restoration of Russia’s tsarist regime, and seeks to fuel white supremacy extremism in the West. RIM maintains contacts with neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups across Europe and the United States. The group has provided paramilitary training to Russian nationals and members of like-minded organizations from other countries at its facilities in St. Petersburg. Members of RIM’s armed wing, the Imperial Legion, have fought alongside pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and been involved in conflicts in Libya and Syria. In addition to its ultra-nationalist beliefs, RIM is known for its anti-Semitic and anti-Ukrainian views. The U.S. State Department listed RIM as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in April 2020. It is the first white supremacist group to be designated as a SDGT.

Iraq
Sulaimani Asayish arrests seven on terrorism charges
[Rudaw] Sulaimani’s Asayish forces on Thursday announced they had arrested seven people, including three high profile Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) suspects, on terrorism charges.

"Seven suspects, all of whom were wanted by the Iraqi federal government, were arrested as per article 4 of terrorism laws," read a statement from Sulaimani Asayish forces, adding that the suspects were all from central and southern Iraqi provinces but had tried to hide in the Kurdistan Region under the pretense of "working".

"After investigation, it was found out that three of the arrested had been ranked Emir within ISIS ranks, and they have all been sent in front of the judiciary," the statement added.

ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014. While the group has been devoid of territorial control since 2017, it continues to pose a serious security threat to the country through bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions, particularly in areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

Members of the terrorist group have previously used suburban areas of the Kurdistan Region as a way to hide following the group’s territorial defeat.

In August, Sulaimani security forces announced they had arrested 17 suspected ISIS members who had "confessed" to have planned to assassinate prominent clergymen and Peshmerga commanders.

Several alleged ISIS members were killed when an Iraqi Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
targeted their location in southwestern Erbil province in May.

Shin Bet reveals Hamas attempts to recruit West Bank Palestinians for terror
[IsraelTimes] Security agency says most suspects questioned in recent weeks unaware terror group using them; Israel revokes entry permits for 230 relatives of members involved in operation

The Shin Bet security agency on Wednesday said Israel was revoking the entry permits to Israel from 230 Paleostinians in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip, relatives of Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, members who allegedly worked to recruit West Bank Paleostinians to help commit attacks.

In a statement, the Shin Bet said in recent weeks dozens of West Bank Paleostinians had been arrested and questioned over their alleged ties with Hamas operatives in Gaza. The agency said many of the young suspects were unaware that Hamas was using them to prepare attacks against Israeli targets.

According to the Shin Bet, the Hamas operatives hid their real identities by masquerading as companies and other entities, while recruiting West Bank Paleostinians for paid work. The Paleostinians in the West Bank would be tasked with transferring funds intended for purchasing weapons or delivering packages of weapons and ammunition to Hamas operatives, it said.

"All this is without the couriers being aware, in most cases, that they are transferring weapons or are involved in terror activity," the Shin Bet said.

The agency says the operation was led by Farah Hamed, 45, a Hamas member from the West Bank town of Silwad who was deported to Gaza as part of the 2011 Shalit deal. The Shin Bet said Hamed was a member of the Gaza-based terror group’s so-called "West Bank headquarters," a unit involved in advancing terror attacks against Israel from the West Bank.

Several of the suspects have been indicted at a military court for various security offenses, including illegal arms dealing.

The Shin Bet detailed the cases of two of the suspects.

The first, Salam Ziad, 27, from the Jalazone refugee camp was contacted on Facebook in July by an account under the name Haled Taleb, offering work for a Ottoman Turkish courier company that works in the West Bank.

Ziad was first tasked with transferring thousands of dollars between different areas in the West Bank, without knowing their intended use.

The Haled Taleb account then presented himself as someone who works for Mohammed Dahlan, a senior Paleostinian Authority politician, and instructed Ziad to purchase several firearms, the Shin Bet said. Ziad purchased three assault rifles, two handguns, and ammunition with the help of his cousin, Ahmed Ziad, also from Jalazone, and was tasked with delivering them to a Hamas operative in Huwara, according to the statement. The weapons were given to brothers Mohammed and Mahmoud Ghazi, who were accused of opening fire at Israeli vehicles on the Route 60 highway, near Huwara on September 9, 2022.

The second suspect detained by the Shin Bet, Mohammed Yazen Jabar, 21, from a-Ram in East Jerusalem, responded to an ad on Facebook seeking workers for a restaurant. Jabar was then contacted by an account going by the name Abu Alaa, who said he was seeking deliverymen to transfer packages of perfume to the West Bank. In August, Abu Alaa instructed Jabar to purchase and deliver assault rifles and handguns to two Hamas operatives in the West Bank, who were both also arrested.

"The Shin Bet’s investigations revealed that some of the money reached those recruits through digital currency traders, who were also deceived by Hamas members," the agency said.

In response to the attempts by the Hamas operatives to set up attacks, Israel revoked the entry permits to Israel from 230 of their relatives.

A security bigshot said "the actions of Hamas and the other terror groups in the Gaza Strip will lead to a reduction in the number of entry permits for workers from Gaza to Israel."

The service warned that the Gaza-based terrorist group was increasingly trying to carry out attacks in the West Bank and Israel.

2 Palestinian rioters shot and wounded during clashes in East Jerusalem, police say
[IsraelTimes] Injured suspects in Silwan neighborhood taken to hospital for treatment; police say they hurled Molotov cocktails, firecrackers at officers from close range.

Police officers shot and moderately hurt two Paleostinians allegedly involved in riots in East Jerusalem on Wednesday evening, law enforcement officials said. According to a police spokesperson, officers of the Jerusalem precinct and Border Police troops operated in the neighborhood of Silwan amid violent mostly peaceful protests that included Molotov cocktails hurled at Israeli forces. The spokesperson said the suspected rioters threw the Molotov cocktails and firecrackers at the officers from close range and were shot. The injured pair were transported to hospital for treatment, with one in moderate condition and one at death's door.

Police said that "at a certain point, a Border Police officer — who was operating at the scene felt his life was in danger due to fireworks being fired directly at him and Molotov cocktails being hurled at him from a range of a few meters — fired accurately at the two suspects and neutralized them," according to the spokesperson.

Police said they found a utility knife, a Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", flag, and a bunch of firecrackers among the suspects’ belongings.

Officers also operated in a number of other locations in East Jerusalem on Wednesday, police said, with forces using riot dispersal means to disperse crowds. No coppers were hurt during the violence. Jerusalem District Police Commander Doron Turgeman instructed officers to increase "operational activity" to maintain order in East Jerusalem, police said.

Earlier Wednesday, police clashed with Paleostinians in the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem as they demolished the home of a gunman who killed an Israeli soldier last year. A Paleostinian teenager was killed amid the festivities after he aimed a weapon that turned out to be a fake gun at the officers.

A video released by police showed the suspect pointing what appears to be a gun at the forces, then running away as officers opened fire. At one point he threw the item away, before collapsing. The gun later turned out to be fake and not a real firearm, a police spokesperson said. The suspect, named as Salah Muhammad Ali, 17, was listed at death's door and was taken for further medical treatment. Paleostinian media later said he had died of his wounds.

Hundreds of coppers entered Shuafat on Wednesday morning to demolish Udai Tamimi’s home. Tamimi is accused of killing Sgt. Noa Lazar, 18, and seriously wounding a civilian guard on October 8, 2022, at a checkpoint near the camp. Tamimi expeditiously departed at a goodly pace and was killed while attempting to commit another attack at a checkpoint near the entrance of the West Bank settlement city of Ma’aleh Adumim on October 19. One security guard was lightly hurt in the incident

Israel regularly demolishes the homes of Paleostinians accused of carrying out deadly terror attacks as a matter of policy. The efficacy of the policy has been hotly debated even within the Israeli security establishment, while human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
activist muppets denounce the practice as unjust collective punishment.

Also Wednesday morning, a Paleostinian man who attempted to stab soldiers in the northern West Bank was rubbed out. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the Paleostinian, armed with a knife, approached an army post on Route 55 near the settlement of Kedumim and tried to stab soldiers. Surveillance camera footage of the incident showed the suspect exiting a red car next to the army post which is adjacent to a bus stop, running toward the troops, and apparently attempting to stab them, before being shot.

Tensions have soared in the West Bank as the IDF has pressed on with an anti-terror offensive mostly focused on the northern West Bank to deal with a series of attacks that have left 31 people in Israel dead in 2022. The IDF’s operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left 171 Paleostinians dead in 2022, and another 20 since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during festivities with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians.

In arrest raids across the West Bank early Wednesday, the IDF said troops arrested 11 wanted Paleostinians.

More about the attempted stabbing at the West Bank army post:
Local security officials said the suspect, named as Aref Abdel Nasser Lahlouh, 20, from the Jenin refugee camp, was killed.

The military said no soldiers were hurt in the incident.

Lebanon's prosecutor general has ordered the release of all suspects detained in connection with the deadly 2020 Beirut port blast
[TWITTER]

Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
’s top public prosecutor on Wednesday charged the Beirut port blast investigating judge and ordered the release of those detained in connection with the earth-shattering kaboom, after rejecting the judge’s surprise resumption of the probe.

The moves by Ghassan Oweidat signal escalating opposition by Lebanon’s ruling establishment to efforts by Judge Tarek Bitar to reopen the probe into the August 4, 2020, blast that killed more than 220 people.

In a text message exchange with Rooters, Oweidat said he had summoned Bitar for questioning but did not specify whether he had charged him. Bitar said he had been charged but did not give details.

A judicial source had earlier said Oweidat had filed charges against Bitar over alleged wrongdoing in his handling of the probe.

Bitar on Monday unexpectedly resumed his investigation into the earth-shattering kaboom after high-level political interference and legal complaints had paralyzed the probe for more than a year.

He also charged top current and former officials including Oweidat without specifying the charges against the top prosecutor.

Bitar said on Wednesday he would continue his probe despite mounting resistance. He told Rooters he would "continue until I issue an indictment" and said that Oweidat "had no right" to file the charge or release detainees.

For Lebanese desperate to see accountability over the earth-shattering kaboom, Bitar symbolizes hope that justice may one day be served in a country where impunity has long been the norm.

Oweidat on Tuesday sent a letter to Bitar saying his probe remained suspended and on Wednesday issued a decision, a copy of which was seen by Rooters, saying the judge did not have the
authority to resume his investigation.

In the same decision, Oweidat released all those detained in connection with the probe "without exception" but said they would face a travel ban.

At least 17 people, mostly low- to mid-level officials, were tossed into the calaboose since 2020 in relation to the case, said Amnesia Amnesty International, in conditions it said could violate their due process rights.

Badri Daher, who headed the customs authority at the time of the blast and was the most bigwig detained following the earth-shattering kaboom, was freed on Wednesday, Daher’s sister told Rooters.

The explosion, one of the largest non-nuclear blasts on record, was caused by hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate unloaded at the port in 2013.

To many Lebanese, the disaster symbolized the wider corruption and mismanagement of a ruling elite that had also steered Lebanon into a devastating financial collapse.

SDF, Coalition Launch Anti-ISIS Operation In Syria’s Raqqa, Tabqa, tie up dozens of turbans

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Wednesday that they had launched a new operation to pursue Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition in Raqqa, Tabqa and surrounding regions, north Syria.

The SDF media center announced, in a statement, a large-scale security operation named “Operation Retaliation for Raqqa Martyrs,” aiming to target ISIS sleeper cells and their operatives, destroying channels of communication between them, uprooting their potential hideouts and drying up their enabling environment, primarily facilitators and recruitment networks.

In December 2022, a group of ISIS militants attacked a security center of the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) in Raqqa, killing six officers of the Asayish and the SDF.

The operation will be carried out in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition.

“A joint operations room has been formed, backed by International Coalition airpower,” the statement reads. It is set to be the first SDF-Coalition operation in Raqqa since US troops pulled out of the region in 2019.

The large-scale operations have already borne results that will be announced soon, according to the SDF media center.

In December 2022, the SDF launched Operation ‘Al-Jazeera Thunderbolt’ in the countryside of Hasakah and Qamishli to pursue ISIS sleeper cells.

Kurdish forces seize dozens of suspected IS members in Syria

bandidos faceless myrmidons in the area in retaliation for an attack by the turban group there last month, according to a statement.

Syrian Democratic Forces said they raided ``dozens of potential points and hideouts'' in the city Raqqa, formerly held by the Islamic State group, and the surrounding area, and arrested dozens of suspected IS members. The U.S.-led coalition forces provided air cover and drone surveillance during the operation, the statement added.

The operation was in response to an IS attack on Raqqa in late December that killed six members of the Kurdish-led forces. The SDF also announced formation of a ``joint operations room'' backed by the international coalition aimed at targeting IS cells.

s against Kurdish groups in Syria in retaliation for a deadly November explosion in Istanbul. Ankara blamed Kurdish groups for the attack, an allegation the groups deny.

The SDF said that according to its intelligence, IS ``is attempting to reorganize the terrorist cells and appointing new leaders`` as well as ``issuing instructions to move from individual to group terrorist attacks on the prisons`` holding IS members.

More than 42,400 imported muscle and some 23,200 Syrians accused of IS ties, and their families, are held in camps and prisons in northeastern Syria, according to a Human Rights Watch report last month. The report detailed dire conditions in the detention facilities and called for repatriation of the detained foreign nationals, most of them women and kiddies, by their countries.

Western countries have repatriated an increasing number of their citizens from northeastern Syria, including most recently La Belle France, which returned a group of 32 minors and 15 women on Tuesday.
