Foreigners captured by Russian forces sentenced to death. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
2022-06-10
[BBC] UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has just spoken with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

They discussed the death sentences given to two Britons, Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, and Moroccan national Brahim Saaudun. The three soldiers were captured by Russian troops while fighting for Ukraine.

Truss tweeted that the judgement against them was an "egregious breach of the Geneva convention" and that her and Kuleba had discussed efforts to secure their release.
I'm pretty sure the Geneva convention allows battlefield executions of foreign mercenaries.
"There's no justification at all for this breach of the protection they're entitled to."
The Geneva conventions apply to regular uniformed soldiers of a national military force.

#8  Chechnia is part of the Russian Federation. They have a different problem in that they have been widely used for war crimes.

The Syrians and wagnerites on the other hand ...

#6  So... Wagner Group are Russians, but are mercenaries. What's their status?

What about the Chechens? Syrians?

How loudly will the Russians squeal when the favor is returned?

#4  I believe these 2 were in the Ukranian military before the war started with 1 actually having a family in the Ukraine and was trying to become a citizen.

#3  What is the difference between a foreign mercenary and a foreign international terrorist 'activist' / freedom fighter ?

Typically one signs a contract to be in the nation's military. That way they are a soldier of that nation and should be treated accordingly. The terrorist just shows up and is given the tools needed.

By the Geneva convention, they should be treated as prisoners of war. I doubt Russia will execute them. This is more of a PR stunt and negotiations will follow for their release. Most likely with lots of money.

#2  What is the difference between a foreign mercenary and a foreign international terrorist 'activist' / freedom fighter ? Other than the Leftists in the media love one and hate the other... If you are uniformed and surrender you are a combatant or foreign military advisors could also be shot out of hand.

#1  Good model for Western governments to follow for all the returning ISIS members. A ritual trial followed by execution. Oh, and those Russian mercs in Syria, Libya, et al.

I'm pretty sure the Geneva convention allows battlefield executions of foreign mercenaries

I suggest you check the fine print. If combatants are properly uniformed, generally no. If they are out of uniform or in the uniform of their enemy, they're considered spies and not covered by the convention.
