Brazil tribe finds plane crash survivors
2009-10-31
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Brazilian Air Force has confirmed that a native Amazonian tribe found a missing military plane and some survivors.

According to the Air Force, the plane landed on the Itui River, in Amazon, and was found by Indians from the Matis tribe. It says members of the Matis tribe spotted the wreckage of the single propeller Cessna C-98 along with nine survivors. The tribe then alerted local authorities.

The body of one of the passengers has been located, but one of the crew members is still missing.

Eleven people were traveling in the aircraft including four military and seven National Health Foundation (Funasa) employees. The group was participating in a Health Ministry operation to vaccinate over 3,700 Indians from various tribes in the Javari Valley region, as well as other inhabitants of distant areas.

The officials were heading to a variety of indigenous communities as part of the vaccination campaign.

The area is home to a handful of Indian tribes that have little contact with the outside world.
