Sauerland Group planned attacks in major cities
2008-09-06
They intended to kill as many as possible with their attacks: The so-called Sauerland Cell planned attacks in numerous major German cities, according to the States' Attorney. Targets included Frankfurt, Dortmund , Duesseldorf, Munich , Cologne , and the US base in Ramstein.

Karlsruhe — The Federal States' Attorney has revealed details of the complaint against the three accused terrorists of the Sauerland terror group. It states that bombings against American citizens and American installations were intended, which would have caused as many casualties as possible. As targets, the men were considering bars, pubs, discos, and airfields. Among others, probable targets were in Frankfurt/Main, Ramstein, Dortmund, Duesseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart, and Munich.

The men, two Germans and one Turk, have been accused of membership in a domestic terrorist group which was planning bombings and murders. They were arrested in the Sauerland during September, 2007.

The process against the two Islamic converts Fritz Gelowicz, 29, and Daniel Schneider, 22, as well as against the Turk Adem Yilmaz, 29, will be before the State Superior Court in Duesseldorf. Schneider must also answer to charges of attempted murder of a Police Officer, since he opened fire at an Officer of the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA — Federal Criminal Office).

The trio was arrested during a spectacular operation in the town of Medebach-Oberschledorn on 4 September 2007. The men are accused of having planned attacks against US installations on behalf of the Islamischen Dschihad Union (Islamic Jihad Union - IJU) using car-bombs. Shortly before the arrest, investigators covertly exchanged the twelve containers of bomb-building chemicals, in order to mitigate the danger to the population.

For membership in a terrorist association, there is a maximum penalty of ten years.
