Quake Rattles Indonesia's Sumatra Island
2006-06-12
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A moderate earthquake struck off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Monday, the government said. There were no immediate report of injuries or damage. The magnitude-5.9 quake was centered 330 miles southwest of the town of Bandar Lampung, said Agung Mulyo Utomo, a staffer the country's meteorology and geophysics agency.

Local radio station el-Shinta said the quake was lightly felt in Bandar Lampung. Utomo said there were no reports of injuries, damage or a tsunami.

Bandar Lampung is located on the southern tip of Sumatra island and is 155 miles northwest of Jakarta.

#4  Alaska Paul - It was interesting how he evolved from something of a profiteer and villian (when he wanted to leave his day-trip passengers on the island, to a hero with good seafaring instincts, LOL. The best part: it wasn't fiction, but historical fact. I don't recall the name of the woman who kept the diary, but she should be something of a patroness-saint to vulcanologists. :)

#3  flyover---M'Lady and I watched the program, too. The sea captain took the passengers and crew on one hell of a ride into a tsunami wave. Quite the fellow. A boom from explosion was heard 3000 miles away, that would take 4 hours to get there. One hell of a boom! Ashfall, earthquakes, tsunami, pyroclastic flows. One hellish disaster after another.

#1  If this region wasn't infested by Islam, I'd feel very sorry for them.

This is God's favorite disaster zone. I watched a Discovery Channel documentary on Krakatoa last night - it's building for a return engagement, as if they don't have enough to look forward to.
