An Imam Answers Women's Questions About Islam
2004-12-19
When a women has her monthly periods can she read?

In principle a women in menses should not touch or recite the holy quraan.She may engage in any other form of zikr, for example: sending durood on nabi, taking the name of Allah etc.

=============

Is it true that Woman has been created from the CURVED Rib of Man, and hence the nature?

When Nabi Aadam (Alayhis salaam) was created, he was lonely. Allah created his spouse Hawaa (Alayhis salaam) from his left rib. The various creations of Allah Ta'ala have been created from different matter, the matter also has an effect in the nature of these creations. For example, Jinn have been created from fire, which has the quality of rising. Thus, Jinn generally have the quality of pride. Man has been created from sad [sand?], which has the quality of being low. Thus man is humble by nature.

Women, having been created from a rib and have a degree of imbalance in their nature. The Ahaadith give a few examples of this imbalanced nature of women. Women have a common trait of being ungrateful of their husband, and of being hasty in cursing those that hurt their feelings. Again, this does not mean that all women are ungrateful, but that should not willfully make an effort to be grateful, the quality of ungratefulness will manifest itself.

The husband is advised that in view of the wife's imbalanced nature, he should be patient and accept her as she is. He should not expect to completely correct her. If the husband does not have patience, and expects the wife to be perfect, there will be much turmoil in the home, to the extent that it will eventually lead in the marriage breaking down. This has been repeatedly confirmed through experience.

=============

Can a male or female jinn have sex with human beings while (the humans) are awake or while they are asleep?

Yes, this is possible and such incidents have been reported in the past.

=============

Can a Muslim view a female unclothed?

It is not permissible for a male to see the entire body of a strange female (Ghayr Mahram with whom marriage is permissible). The above ruling excludes a wife as it is permissible for the husband to look at his wife being uncovered. However, that too should be avoided as it is against morality and shame.

=============

Can I attend women only functions, like bridal/baby showers, if husband drops off & picks me up?

Bridal and baby showers are all un-Islamic customs. A Muslim is not permitted to attend such un-Islamic functions even if the function is open to ladies exclusively.

=============

If a man doesn't want to go to his barren and above 52 years of age wife for sexual needs will he be sinning according to shariah, till what time does he have to go, if he does'nt want to spend any night of the week with her but only with ther younger wife and is fulfilling rest of her needs equally, what then is he free not to spend any night with her.

In principle, according to Shari'ah if a person has more than one wife then he has to exercise equality between them in all those aspects which are in his control and also equality in the number of days spent between them. However, with regards to those aspects which a person has no control over, e.g. amount of love he has, sexual relations, etc. equality is not necessary. (Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.340)

However, if one of the wives happily agree to forego her rights, then this will also be permissible. It should also be borne in mind that both those women are his wives and have desires which ought to be fulfilled. It is her due right that her husband satisfies her sexual desires as well.

=============

Is it true that women who go to heaven will have one husband whom they will have to share amongst 70 other women as men will have 70 wives. This is certainly not fair nor is it justice. I'm sure Allah loves us all and women will be treated equally amongst men, because we also are humans like them and do the same deeds as them, so why will women have to share their husband. I'm not saying women should have more than one husband but sharing with 70 others is certainly outrageous, if a man was to share one wife amongst 70 other men, he would think the same.

It appears that your concern devolves around women's feelings. Obviously, our hearts and its feelings are in the control of Allah and He has promised every dweller of Jannah peace and contentment.

==================

Could you please specify what special nounties the believing, pious and obedient wives will enjoy in Jannah? The books I have read about Jannah clearly state the many beautiful women the men will enjoy. Nothing is clearly stated about the men that the women might enjoy.

Women in Jannah will get whatever they desire. Allah Ta'ala states, 'And you will receive in Jannah whatever you desire.' (Surah41 Aayat31). The pious, worldly women will be made the queens of Jannat and be of a higher rank than the Hoors. Their beauty will far excel the beauty of the Hoors.

==================

Who will keep the believing women company in Jannah and satisfy their desires while their husbands are engaged with the Hoors?

Their husbands will satisfy their desires.

==================

Will their be any males created similar to the hoors that are created for the men?

No.

==================

Will a husband still love and desire his worldly wife in Jannah? Will he ever become bored with her due to him having many other wives in Jannah?

He will always love her and never become bored with her. It should be borne in mind that Jannah is unlike this world. Allah will ensure that every inhabitant of Jannah will always be in extreme joy and happiness. Instead of worrying about whether we will be happy in Jannat, we should accept Allah's guarantee that we will be happy therein and concern ourselves with ensuring that we please Allah sufficiently to be granted entry into Jannah.

=============

If men will be rewarded with a certain number of chaste partners in Jannah, then what will women be rewarded with?

While a man will get many Hurs in jannah, a women would be made the queen of Jannah. Her beauty will far outshine the beauty of the hurs. Umme Salamah R.A narrates that she said to Rasûlullah SAW "O Rasûlullah, are the women of this world superior or the hûrs?" He replied, "The women of this world will have superiority over the hûrs just as the outer lining of a garment has superiority over the inner lining."

Umme Salamah R.A then asked, "O Rasûlullah, what is the reason for this?" He answered, "Because they performed salâh, fasted, and worshipped [Allah]. Allah will put light on their faces and silk on their bodies. [The human women] will be fair in complexion and will wear green clothing and yellow jewelry. Their incense-burners will be made of pearls and their combs will be of gold. They will say, 'We are the women who will stay forever and we will never die. We are the women who will always remain in comfort and we will never undergo difficulty. We are the women who will stay and we will never leave. Listen, we are happy women and we will never become sad. Glad tidings to those men for whom we are and who are for us.'" (Tabrânî)
Muhammed ibn Ka'b Al-Qurazi t narrates from a person of the Ansâr (people of Madînah) that Rasûlullah SAW said, "I take the oath of that Being who sent me with the truth, you are not more acquainted with your wives and houses than the people of Jannat. A person of Jannat will come to 72 wives which Allah specially created in Jannat (hûrs) and 2 human wives. The human wives will have virtue over the [hûrs] because they worshipped Allah in the world.(Targheeb Vol.4 Pg.534) This will be the high position of the women of the world in Jannah.

If a women had more than one husband, she will choose which one of them to stay with, and she will choose the one with the best character. As for those women who never married or their husband were mushriks, they will be allowed to marry whichever worldly man, they so wish, in Jannah. Thus every man in Jannah will have 2 wives from the world.

=============

Can a woman remove the following hair if her husband orders her or her husband desires (1) Hairs upon legs and hands (2) Hairs below the chin (3) Hairs upon the chicks, face (4) Hairs in the nose coming out of the nose (5) Hairs below the nose and above the upper lip i.e. moustaches place (6) Hairs between the eye-brows

A female may remove all the hairs referred to in point 1 till 5. It is not permissible to remove hair between the eyebrows.

=============

If a women has very thick eyebrows and small hairs around it, will it be permissible for her to bleach bits of it? If we were looking for a husband for her, and she is not as beautiful as it is, and with that eyebrow, it makes her look worse, will it be permissible for her to bleach in this case, as we are finding difficulty looking for a husband for her?

Mullah Ali Qari (R.A) has commentated that plucking of the facial hair is haraam (prohibited) for a woman with the exception of moustache or beard hairs, if any woman is unfortunate enough to be troubled by these. (Mirqaat Vol.8 Pg.295; Ashrafiyyah). However, if the eyebrows have become so dense that it is unseemly for a woman and incites abhorrence in her husband, it is permissible to trim it to a more appropriate and normal size. (Ahsanul Fataawa Vol.8 pg.76)

=============

A lot of maulanas agree that the hair INBETWEEN the eyebrows is not part of the eyebrows & thus permissable to remove if the eyebrows meet here.( I'm talking about the hair above the bridge of the nose ), although it's not allowed to shape any other part of the eyebrows.( Thay say that Only the hair above the eye is what's not allowed to be removed)I have read a question similar to mine that has been given the standard reply. Please clarify.

Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (Radhhallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) cursed a Naamisa (a female who plucks the eyebrows of another) and a Mutanammasa (a female whose eyebrows are plucked). (Abu Dawud pg.574 Rashidiyya) In view of the above Hadith, it is not permissible to remove the hair under the eyebrows. It is also not permissible to remove the hair between the eyebrows even if it is unkempt. (Fataawa Mahmoodiya vol.5 pg.181)

=============

I want to remove the hair in between my eyebrows, above my nose, and extending into my hair-line. Can I pluck stray hairs? Can I trim bushy eyebrows?

No, it is not permissible for females to pluck their eyebrows. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) cursed a Mutanammisa (a female who seeks to remove her eyebrows).

=============

You say Allah does not like those who alter their looks, But how comes women can stop having children or not have them at all just to keep her figure nice for her husband when having a kid is such a big issue in Islam. so what is wrong with plucking bushy eyebrows just to look beautiful for your husband?

Your understanding that a woman can practice birth control to maintain her beauty and shape for her husband is incorrect. Contraception (Azl = Coitus Interruptus) is permissible on a limited scale for valid reasons - reasons considered by the Shariäh to be valid. The circumstances which will permit reversible and permanent contraception differ.

Reversible contraception: Among the reasons accepted by the Shariäh as valid for practising reversible contraception are: a) Physical weakness.b) Sickness.c) The wife maintaining her beauty or figure for the sake of her husband. d) The couple being on a journey or in a distant land. e) Adverse political conditions, e.g. children are forcibly separated from their parents as is advocated by communism; etc. f) The couple decide to separate in the near future. g) The wife is an immoral person.

Permanent contraception is permissible only if the woman's life is in danger or her health is seriously threatened.

As regards plucking eye brows, that is prohibited by Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam). The above are general rulings and certainly does not mean that Shari'ah does not take into cognisance circumstances.

=============

Can we (women) cut our hair just to remove split ends?

Women may cut their hair to remove split ends.

=============

Is it permitted to colur the hair more than one coluor at one time? Also is it permissible to curl the hair so that it remains so for several months? What does the Shariäh say with regard to dying hair? Is it permissible to dye one's hair?

Pure black dye is not permissible. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "There will be people who will come later (in my Ummah) and apply black dye. They will not even smell the fragrance of paradise." (Abu Daawood). However, it is permissible for a Mujaahid (warrior) to apply black dye in order to give the impression of being young. (Jawahirul Fiqh vol2 pg421)
To dye the hair any other colour besides black e.g. Mehndi or Katm (type of grass) is permissible. This was the practice of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the Sahaaba (Radhiyallaahu Ánhum). (Jawahirul Fiqh vol2 pg421)

A female may design her hair with the condition she does not follow the custom of the Kuffaar and does not expose her hair before Ghayr Mahaarim (males permitted to marry)

=============

I'm 14 years old and I have hit puberty but my mum has not said anything to me about shaving what shall I do?

It was only in the last century that people in the west came to realize the importance of shaving off hair under the arms pits and from the pubic area. Do remove the hair from these two areas before they gain the length of a grain of rice. Do also cut your nails frequently as this is another area where harmful organisms accumulate. In fact it is advisable to trim your nails and remove pubic hair when you make ghusl every Friday. It is just so refreshing and gives you a feeling of cleanliness almost immediately.

=============

out of ignorance i used to pluck my eye brows. i did it for a long time and then i heard the hadith of nabi saw. now i cant stop doing it coz it looks terrible. 1. please advise. if i repent and ask Allah 2 4give me, will Nabi SAW still curse me? i did not do it 4 beauty purposes... they were really big. i wear hijab. shukran

You should repent and ask Allah to forgive you. You should also stop plucking them. If your eyebrows continue growing to such an extent that they become double the size of a normal person's eyebrows, then there could be permissible for you to trim them to a normal size, not smaller than that.

==============

Is waxing of eyebrows allowed in Islam? If not what is the alternative ?

Mullah Ali Qari (R.A) has commentated that plucking of the facial hair is haraam (prohibited) for a woman with the exception of moustache or beard hairs, if any woman is unfortunate enough to be troubled by these. (Mirqaat Vol.8 Pg.295; Ashrafiyyah). However, if the eyebrows have become so dense that it is unseemly for a woman and incites abhorrence in her husband, it is permissible to trim it to a more appropriate and normal size.

============
